PERIOD OF PROPHET‫ﷺ‬
Two methods for the preservation of holy Quran
1. Memorization ‫حتفیظ‬
2. Writing ‫کتابت‬
Hazrat Usman (‫ )ریض ہللا عنہ‬says: Every portion was written and
given its specified place according to the order of prophet
Muhammad (‫ )ﷺ‬because when ever any ayat used to revealed
prophet use to call the inscribers of revelation (‫ )اكتبان ويح‬or
writers of Holy Quran to bring pen & ink to write on different
materials, say skins of animals, bones, skins of tree, big leafs and 8

stones etc.

INSCRIBERS OF HOLY QURAN
There are approximately near to fourty inscribers of holy Quran ‫(اكتبان‬
)‫قرآن‬and the famous are
All four pious Caliphs (‫)ریض ہللا عنہم‬
Zaid bin Sabit (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬
Huzaifah bin Yaman (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬
Abdullah bin Rawaha (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬
Abdullah bin Arkam (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬
Khalid bin Waleed (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬
Khalid bin Saeed (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬
Maawiya bin Abi Sufyan (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬ 11

2. PERIOD OF ABU BAKR (‫)رضی ہللا عنہ‬

In the starting of His period, in 11th Hijra, in battle

Yamama with false prophet Muselma Kazab more than 70
hufaz were martyered.
Narrated by Hazrat Zaid bin sabit (‫ )ریض ہللا عنہ‬in Saheeh
Bukhari, that on the occasion of battle with the people of
Yamama (and Muselma Kazab) I was called by Hazrat Abu
Bakr (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬, when I reached, I observed that Hazrat
Umar (‫ )ریض ہللا عنہ‬was also present. Hazrat Abu Bakr ( ‫ریض‬ 12

‫ )ہللا عنہ‬said that Umar came to me and said that:

“that numerous Qura ul Quran (Hufaz) have

been martyred and if this situation would
continues and Hufaz continuously martyring, I
fear that might be a huge portion of Holy
Quran will become unavailable. That is why,
my opinion is that, you should give orders for
the collection of Holy Quran” ….
How do you do that work that prophet not
performed.

 PERIOD OF ABU BAKR(‫( )رضی ہللا عنہ‬conti:)
Therefore Hazrat Abu Bakr appointed a committee headed
by Zaid bin Sabit (‫ )رضی ہللا عنہ‬to collect the Holy Quran in a
complete book format. They invited all the Muslims who
had the Holy Quran or some of its parts with them in written
format. After consulting all such material and confirming it
with his own memory coupled with the testimony of many
witnesses, he compiled the first standard script of the Holy
Quran in a book format (The Mushaf)

This manuscript, held by the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan,
is the earliest existent written version of the Quran.

Why prophet (‫ )ﷺ‬him self did not
take efforts for the collection of Holy
Quran?

3. PERIOD OF USMAN E GHANI (‫)رضی ہللا عنہ‬
When Persia and Syria were conquered by the
Muslims, and Islam spread outside Arabia.
Trimizi Report, Narrated by Anas bin Malik that
on the victory of Azerbaijan and Armenia Iraqi
and Syrian people were together, there Hazrat
Huzaifa bin Yaman got worried to see the
differences in recitation between the people of both
countries.
Hazrat Huzaifa (‫ )رضی ہللا عنہ‬came to Hazrat Usman
and said (‫)رضی ہللا عنہ‬

O! commander of Faithfull's “ stop the people

before they differ in Quran as Jews and Christians 20

differed in their Holy Script”.

3. PERIOD OF USMAN E GHANI(‫)رضی ہللا عنہ‬
Hazrat Usman (‫ )ریض ہللا عنہ‬appointed committee headed by Hazrat
Zaid bin Sabit (‫ )ریض ہللا عنہ‬for preparing seven (or eight) standard copies
of Holy Quran. They repeated the same procedure as was adopted for the
first time when compiling the first standard script.
Committee consisted of:
i. Zaid bin Sabit (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬
ii. Abdur Rehman bin Haris bin Hisham ( ‫ریض ہللا عنہ‬ )
iii. Abdullah bin Zubair (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬

iv. Saeed bin Aas (‫)ریض ہللا عنہ‬

PERIOD OF USMAN E GHANI (‫()رضی ہللا عنہ‬conti:)

Hazrat Usman (‫ )ریض ہللا عنہ‬titled as “Compiler of Holy Quran” ‫جامع القرآٓن‬
These standard copies were sent and specified to the seven main cities of the Muslim world for their
common people so that they might be referenced whenever needed.
i. Makkah

iii. Bahrain
iv. Basra
v. Kofa
vi. Yeman

Conclusion
This work was completed in 25th Hijrah.
Thus the reading for non-arabs was still difficult.
In the era of Hijaj bin yusuf (89H-129H) dia-critical marks
were invented by Abdul Aswad Duali and improved by his
disciples Yahya bin Yamar and Nassar bin Assim.
