Project Brief:
BRIEF: You will write 600 - 800 word short story. The stimulus for the story will be given to you by your
teacher. Work through each of the steps on this brief. Doing everything in each step means you’ve
met the brief. Think of ways you can supplement your work by going over and above the brief.
Your short story must be original individual work – you cannot use the work of others and pass it off
as your own. This is plagiarism and will result in a zero grade.
Your work must be submitted on time (there will be penalties for work submitted late – 1 day, -10%; 2
days, -20%; 3 days, -30%; 4 days, zero grade).
The work you submit cannot be from a previous semester.
Content:
1. Complete the 2 worksheets (story arc and narrative plan). The Elements of Plot
(exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution) must fit on a story arc.
2. Your short story MUST include the following:
• ONE protagonist and 1 - 2 supporting characters ONLY.
• Effective dialogue (formatted correctly).
• At least ONE type of conflict
• Literary devices (metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia)
• Language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste)
• ONE technique (flashback, flash -forward, foreshadowing, suspense, symbolism)
3. Make sure your story is representative of the stimulus
4. Write a first draft of your short story and edit it using Word > Review > Tracking > All
Markups > Markup Options > Balloons > Show all revisions inline.
5. After editing your first draft, write a final draft of your short story
6. Add the word count at the bottom of your short story
7. Choose a creative and appropriate title
