Re-certification ..................................................................................................................... 6
Although the infrared cameras and software have been simplified over the years, while at
the same time increasing their performance, the real world of physics hasn’t changed.
Compensating for issues such as emissivity and wind when accurately interpreting non-
contact temperature measurements continues to challenge even the most experienced
thermographer.
Sincerely,

Development philosophy
The course package that contains this manual was created using a systematic approach.
Before a single word was written in the manual, a set of learning objectives was
developed, which defined exactly what the ITC expects the student to learn from the
Level 1 course. We have drawn on the collective experience of ITC worldwide to
determine what a Level 1 thermographer needs to know. If it is not necessary, we should
not teach it. Those learning objectives are part of the ISO 9001 quality control system of
FLIR Systems in Sweden and in the United States of America. They have controlled every
step of the development of the course package. The material has been crosschecked to
match the objectives. Everything that is included in the objectives should be taught and
anything that is not part of the objectives should not be taught. The objectives have
guided every part of the course and its development, all the way down to the exam
questions. During the development process, the concepts have been field tested on
course locations throughout the world.
Not much of the knowledge contained herein is new to the world. The subjects have been
taught to students before, and the manual is not a scientific paper that outlines any new
theories or findings. But it is ALL NEW! We kept nothing of the old materials we had – we
threw it all in the waste bin and started from a clean slate, as the saying goes. When bits
and pieces from the old material fitted the new, we pardoned it, picked it up from the bin
and put it back in. But you will not find a single sentence in this manual that comes from
any old material. We only pardoned concepts of teaching the subjects, not the actual
texts. This not a cut and paste product in any way.
First
The presentations in class and this book will follow each other. If you keep your manual
open during the presentations, you should not have to go back and forth in the book at
all. Note taking will be as you personally prefer, and not be a forced necessity. All
headings in the presentation will have a corresponding heading or margin note
Margin note
in the book, to make it easy for you to find in the book what the instructor is currently
discussing. All the important illustrations will be the same in the presentations and in the
book.
Second
There is a set of learning objectives at the beginning of each lesson. At the end of the
lesson, there are some questions pertaining to the content of that lesson. You may go
through them in class, or you may utilize the questions as a part of your own review.
Third
Fourth
You will find that formulae are numbered and written in a grey box, both in the
presentations and in the book. In the reference section, there is a complete list of the
formulae and a short explanation of each, with the conditions under which it is valid, and
how and why it is used. All formula and equations are verbally explained as well, so if you
are unfamiliar with mathematical expressions, you should do well anyway. For some
people they simplify, for others they don’t, so we include both.
This manual exists in a Metric and a US version in terms of measurement units used. There
will also be several language versions. Chances are that if you are reading this in a
language other than your own, there may be a version in your native language that might
suit you better.
About Certification
All students that take the ITC Level 1 Thermography training course are eligible for ITC
Level 1 certification.
When all requirements are met, an ITC Certified Thermographer receives a certificate and
a credit card-sized wallet card as proof of hers/his certified status.
The requirements set forth by the ITC to receive the certificate are as follows:
Participation means that the student must be present and active during the whole training
course. Short interruptions are acceptable, but it is assumed that the student remains at
the course venue during all training sessions. Absence for more than 2 hours will disqualify
for Certification.
Re-certification
Certificates issued by ITC are valid for a period of 5 years. To be re-certified for an
additional five years, the student must demonstrate continuing education in, or
professional contribution to, the field of thermography. There are two ways to extend
your ITC certification for an additional five years:
Attend an ITC thermography certification class at your current level or higher, or attend a
custom re-certification course.
Before we certify you as a thermographer, we want to see that you are able to draw
relevant conclusions from IR images.
The final test ends with a sheet showing three IR images, each with three statements
about them. For each image, you will choose one statement as being correct, judging
from the image and facts given about the shown object.
