Subject: ICT Applications in Education

Professor: Dr. Gerry De Guzman
Submitted by: Ms. Camille L. Manlongat

I. Introduction:
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is a broader term for
Information Technology (IT), which refers to all communication technologies, including the
internet, wireless networks, cell phones, computers, software, middleware, video-
conferencing, social networking, and other media applications and services enabling users to
access, retrieve, store, transmit, and manipulate information in a digital form. According to
Daniels (2002), ICTs have become within a very short time, one of the basic building blocks
of modern society. Many countries now regard understanding ICT and mastering the basic
skills and concepts of ICT as part of the core of education, alongside reading, writing, and
numeracy. However, there appears to be a misconception that ICTs generally refers to
computers and computing-related activities‘. This is fortunately not the case, although
computers and their application play a significant role in modern information management,
other technologies and/or systems also comprise the phenomenon that is commonly regarded
as ICTs.Pelgrum and Law (2003) state that near the end of the 1980s, the term was replaced
by IT‘ (information technology) signifying a shift of focus from computing technology to the
capacity to store and retrieve information. This was followed by the introduction of the term
ICT‘ (information and communication technology) around 1992 when e-mail started to
become available to the general public (Pelgrum, W.J., Law, N., 2003).

II. Body: Application

The use of ICT is so omnipresent in society that classrooms should not be less, and
they must guarantee that they take advantage of what they can bring us. However, children
and young people must be taught to use them aware and safe. Furthermore, ICTs are of great
help in developing perception. Being able to pursue various sources and distinct them, as well
as to organization information are some of the most noteworthy skills that students develop
thanks to the use of ICT.
The application or usage of ICT in teaching my subject- Science in junior and senior
high school gives me a puzzled mind. The Science subject is one of the subjects that need to
present the ideas in a well- mannered and be updated. Technology is the application of
science that provides knowledge that is a direct source for new technological possibilities.
Without scientific knowledge, there is no application of the information gained through
scientific methods. Before the pandemic occur in our world, the usage of ICT in education is
common but with less supervision. In order to teach the students the topic in science and
other subjects, we are using the multimedia and devices such as laptops, speakers, and
projectors. We also have social media platforms such as Facebook and youtube to inform and
to give awareness to all people most especially teenagers. The students learn how to create
and innovate their learnings in order to apply it and share it with the audience or the target
one. They can also communicate and express their ideas and feelings through some platforms
and activities that the teachers gave to them. Collaboration between students has clearly
enhanced thanks to various digital tools. It is much easier for them to create team projects,
cooperate and learn from each other. ICT can give possible to adjust the tools and content to
local and nearby realities. By the skills that they gained from these processes, it can give
impact and tap the mind, heart, and skills of every individual- the learners as well as the
educators.

There are some advantages that ICT can give to us:

● Enhanced the modes of communication
● Cost-efficient
● Paperless: Eliminate the usage of paper. Eco-friendly
● Better teaching and learning methods
● Enhanced data and information security
● Minimize cost and save time
● Easy student management
● Automatic solutions to manual paper-based processes and procedures
● Interactive and collaborative teaching and learning methods
● Direct classroom teaching
● Spread awareness of the social impact of technological change in education
● Web-based LMS tools connect students, educators, scholars and researchers, and
education personal together
● Enhance E-learning and learning management system (LMS)
● Independent learning platforms for students
● Teachers can teach better with images, videos and graphics while delivering lessons
● Educators can create engaging, interesting, and well-designed classroom activities
● Improve the administration and enhance the quality and efficiency of education
● Promote and improve the digital culture in schools, colleges, and universities

Disadvantages of ICT in education:

● Misleading and misguiding information
● Risk of cyber attacks and hacks
● A risk to the traditional book and handwriting methods
● Implementing computers and the internet for ICT replace the convention education
curriculums
● Managing courses online is difficult
● Misuse of technology
● Not accessible everywhere
● Teachers require experience to handle ICT
● Implementing computers and the internet is expensive
● Few believe that computers can limit imagination
The ICT in Education may be considered as Boon or Bane but it depends on the
purpose and the guidance of teachers and also parents to make the learners more responsible
in association with Information and Communication Technology.
III. Conclusion:
In summary, the ICT is very helpful and effective for the expansion and extent of
knowledge of individuals most especially the learners if we have the proper and discipline for
the usage of it. Information and Communication Technology is essential in education
nowadays as we are in the digital era and to continue our learning despite this Covid19
pandemic. The interest in learning grows the increase of interaction between educators to
their class, the educators to learners, and learners to their co-learners. To upgrade the 21st
Century skills of the learner such as creativity, critical thinker, collaboration, communication
and etc. And most especially it allows the teachers and students in real-time updating of all
information and resources. Although it has some disadvantages of ICT, with the help of the
teachers, admin, schools, community, stakeholders, and the government it can make the
impossible to become possible by having a strong foundation and having the values such as
perseverance, resiliency, courage, determination, discipline, compassion, and faith to God.
