Here is the torque-speed curve.

As the RPM Of an engine increases, torque increases upto a certain value of
RPM. And as the RPM goes on increasing, torque starts decreasing.

To understand this behaviour, you need to understand one more term which is
called as “ Low-End torque”
torque”.. Low -End Torque is the amount of torque produced
at Low RPM range of an engine ( around 1000–2000 rpm) .This low end torque is
very crucial when moving a vehicle from stand-still or driving in slow-speed
conditions such as in traffic. If the greater amount of torque is generated at the
‘ low-end-torque’’
lower end of engine rpm, it implies that the engine has more ‘low-end-torque
or better pulling ability at slow speeds.

It also implies that vehicle can move very quickly from rest/stand still.

Now as the engine speed keeps increasing, torque starts to decrease because of
the increase in friction between engine’s moving parts.

Engine torque is also related to the gearing. The lower the gear,

pulling ability of an engine and hence greater the torque..

If you know the Horsepower (HP) of an engine, then you can calculate the torque
using the formula :-

Torque = (HP*5252)/RPM

In simple words, when the engine is started up the torque produced is
dependent on the rpm of the engine when the engine is running at low speeds,
when the speed of the engine increases , the torque also increases till the
maximum torque is produced which is in range 3000–5000rpm. After the

maximum torque is produced, any further increase in engine speed will give out
constant maximum torque.

RPM is nothing but Revolutions Per Minute. In Engine, simply RPM tells you
how many times the shaft have completed its rotation with respective to a fixed
axis in a minute.

But how does this shaft rotates?

Its because of Torque that you apply to it.

So, the more force you apply more torque it is and more RPM finally.

But one puzzling question is that

“Why Torque decreases with RPM after certain point?”

This is because of amount of fuel intake at higher speed.

When you pedal more, throttle allows more Air-Fuel mixture to enter the Engine
Cylinder.

But as the piston moves very fast in fraction of seconds, not all exhaust gases are
thrown out during the exhaust stroke and so in very next intake stroke, the

chamber takes in less amount of fuel. So, at higher RPMs, the engine cylinder is

filled with less amount of fuel mixture.

So, as the fuel that is taken is in less amount, the force applied to the engine
becomes less. Hence the less torque at higher RPMs.

So, that is why when you drive, it is advisable to drive in top gears as much as
possible and as soon as possible. Because at low gears, fuel consumption is more
than at the higher RPMs.

They both are inversely propotional.

Power = Torque x RPM

Usually engine generates constant power with very less fluctuations. This makes
other two entities inversely propotional.
