THE USE OF 3D IMAGING TECHNOLOGY IN BIM

ESHIET DANIEL AKPAN (H00365537)

What are 3D imaging technologies?

This is an advanced technology with the ability to create and develop the depth impression or
illusion of an image by converting 2D data/images to 3D models which is highly valuable and useful
in industrial purposes such as quality regulation and testing.(Garant, n.d.)

Relationship with BIM/Applcations

With the help of 3D Imaging, data can be captured in real time which are processed to generate high
graphically 3D models of the captured environment. The BIM models generated through 3D
technologies is known as Scan-to-BIM. It is mainly used to create BIM models of existing properties,
which are then used as a starting point for renovation design or to assist Facilities Management
(FM). There are softwares that can used to process the 3D image in BIM such as Areddo, OpenInfra
platform, ReCap™ Pro 3D. (Valero et al., n.d.)

This technology makes is easier for BIM data to be exchanged with the suppliers, co-contractors and
clients. Modifications can also be made to the processed captured image and can be altered to
perform custom functions such as making the software communicate with other components of the
IT infrastructure in several ways.
