The Flu:

Game
Theory
BY ALPHONSE SAMBRANO
MATH 10 - W1
SYNOPSIS
A group of immigrants are smuggled inside a shipping container with
their final destination being South Korea. Inside the container, one of
the immigrants is a carrier for a lethal and highly contagious virus.
Byung-Ki (Lee Hee-Jun) and Byoung-Woo (Lee Sang-Yeob) drive to the
shipping container to release the immigrants. They soon discover that
all of the immigrants are dead, except for one man.
Soon, thousands of people become infected every hour by the deadly
virus, which kills within 36 hours of infection. The entire suburb of
Bundang is quarantined by the government in a desperate attempt to
stop the virus from spreading further. Firefighter Kang Ji-Koo (Jang
Hyuk) is one of those quarantined. Dr. Kim In-Hae (Soo-Ae) is one of
the first responders to the outbreak of the virus. The outbreak
becomes even more personal once she suspects her own daughter
(Park Min-Ha) is infected by the virus. Firefighter Kang Ji-Koo and Dr.
Kim In-Hae frantically work together in a race against time to find a
cure.
The Situation:
The last scene of the film shows the president trying to fight
Snyder, an American ambassador, over the control of the
military. Snyder orders the soldier to kill everyone in the
mob, including Mi-reu, who, during that scene, is believed to
have the cure for the outbreak. Mi-reu flees and is pushed to
the front of the mob, which is confronting soldiers on the
highway. In-hae is shot while trying to prevent Mi-reu from
crossing the containment line. Mi-reu shields her mother and
pleads for them to stop, then the mob shields Mi-reu. The
president has decided to countermand Schneider's order. ,
Synder has ordered his men for an airstrike. The president
confronts Synder that they will be shooting them down if
this continues. Both are unsure whether the other will push
through with the attack or not.

Should Schneider cooperate and retract his order or should

he continue with the attack? Should the president
preemptively shoot the jets or should he just let the jets be?
Game Theory: The Matrix Model
Assuming Mi-reu has the cure for the outbreak
Schneider
Cooperate Attack 0 - people killed due to both conflict
and outbreak; relationship between
two countries is ruined

2:2 0:1

Cooperate 1 - people killed due to conflict; no

people killed due to outbreak;
relationship between two countries
President is ruined

1:0 1:1
2 - no more people killed due to
Attack outbreak; no people killed due to
conflict; relationship between
countries is maintained

Solution: Both cooperates

If Mi-reu has the cure for the virus outbreak,
the best course of action is for both sides to
cooperate, this is the Nash Equilibrium. They
have no other reason to deviate from these
choices since both parties value the lives of
their people. If either party deviates from
their choices, there is the risk of death for

Interpretation either party, and the relationship between

the two parties is ruined, which still places
their people at risk (due to possible war).

Note that the game theory assumes that

Mi-reu has the cure for the outbreak since
the situation stemmed from the president
believing that she has the cure. If the
president assumed the opposite, he will not
countermand Schneider's decision.
