SUBMISSION DATE: THURSDAY 22nd JULY 2021

1. Design a primary clarifier which can remove 65% of the suspended solids at average flow of
4500 m3/d with peak flows as high as 13000 m3/d of any wastewater treatment plant. Given
the required surface area of basin=150 m2.(4 marks)
Solution:
For the circular tank, the diameter d
d = (4A/π)1/2
= (4×150 m2 / 3.14)1/2
= 13.82 m
Assuming a side wall depth of 4 m, volume of tank = 4×150
600 m3
And detention time at average flow

= 600 m 3 = 0.133 d = 3.2 hours

2. A continuous flow biological reactor is operated without return sludge. The flow to
the reactor is 1580 m3/d, and influent and effluent soluble COD are 450 and 15 mg/L,
respectively. The effluent VSS concentration is 180 mg/L. Calculate the observed
biomass yield Yobs. (6 marks)

Solution
Influent soluble COD(So) =450mg/L.
Effluent soluble COD(S) =15mg/L
Flow (Q) =1580 m3/d
BOD5 Consumed =

VSS produced = Xwt Qwt =180 x 10-3 x 1580 m3/d
