Week 3

Activities:
Solve the following:
1. If the viscosity of water at 70 C is 0.00402 poise and its specific gravity is 0.978 determine its
absolute viscosity in Pa-s and its kinematic viscosity in m2/s and in stokes.

Solution:
1 Pa ⋅ s = 10 poise
μd = (0.00402 poise) (1 Pa ⋅ s/10 poise)
μd = 0.000402 Pa ⋅ s

μk = 0.000402 N/m2 ⋅ s
(0.978) (1000) kg/m3
μk = 4.11 x 10-7 N ⋅ m ⋅ s/kg
μk = 4.11 x 10-7 N ⋅ m ⋅ s/kg x 1 kg ⋅ m/1 N ⋅ s2
μk = 4.11 x 10-7 m2/s
μk = 4.11 x 10-7 m2/s ⋅ 1002 cm2/1 m2
μk = 4.11 x 10-3 stoke

2. If the viscosity of water at 68 oF is 0.01008 poise:

a. Compute its absolute viscosity in pounds-seconds per square foot.

Solution:
1 lb = 444800 dyne
1 ft = 30.48 cm
1 lb ⋅ s/ft2 = 444800 dyne ⋅ s
(30.48 cm)2
= 478.78 poises
μ = 0.01008 poise
478.78 poises
= 2.11 x 10-5 lb ⋅ s/ft2

b. If the specific gravity at 68 oF is 0.998, compute its kinematic viscosity in square feet per second.

Solution:
v = μg/ϒ
= (2.11 x 10-5) (32.2)
(0.998) (62.4)
= 1.09 x 10-5 ft2/s
c. Convert 15.14 poises to kinematic viscosity in ft2 /sec if the liquid has a specific gravity of 0.964.

Solution:
μ = 15.14 poises
478.8 poises
= 0.03162 lb ⋅ s/ft2

v = μg/ϒ
= (0.03162) (32.2)
(0.964) (62.4)
= 0.0169 ft2/s
