a. weight, N/m3
b. density, kg/m3
c. specific gravity

Solution:
a. Unit Weight
ϒω = 46800/5.6
= 8357.14 N/m3

b. Density
= 8357.14/9.81
= 852 kg/m3

c. Specific Gravity
= 852/1000
= 0.85

2. The volume of a tetrachloride having a mass of 1200 kg is 0.952 m 3. Compute the following:
a. mass density, kg/m3
b. specific weight, kN/m3
c. specific gravity

Solution:
a. Mass Density
ρ = m/v
= 1200/0.952
= 1260.5 kg/m3

b. Specific Weight
Weight
= 1200 (9.81)
= 11772 N
= 11.77 kN
ϒ = w/v
= 11.77/0.952
= 12.36 kN/m3

c. Specific Gravity
= 12.36/9.81
= 1.26

3. A certain liquid has a unit weight of 56 kN/m 3.

a. Compute the mass density
b. Compute its specific volume
c. Compute its specific gravity

Solution:
a. Mass Density
= 56000/9.81
= 5708 kg/m3

b. Specific Volume
= 1/ρ
= 1/5708
= 0.000175 m3/kg

c. Specific Gravity
= 56/9.81
= 5.71

4. A quart of water weighs 4.08 lb. Compute the following:

a. Mass in slugs
b. Mass in kg
c. Volume in ft3

Solution:
a. Mass in Slugs
W = mg
4.08 = m (32.2)
= 0.1267 slug

b. Mass in kg
m = 0.1267 (32.2) / 2.2
= 1.85 kg

c. Volume in ft3
W = ϒ Vol.
4.08 = 62.4 Vol.
= 0.065 ft3
5. Supposing two liquids of different densities (ρ1 = 1500 kg/m 3, ρ2 = 500 kg/m3) are poured together into
a 100-L tank, filling it. If the resulting density of the mixture is 800 kg/m 3, find the respective quantities
used.

Solution:
a. First Liquid: V1 and m1
Second Liquid: V2 and m2

p1 = m1/V1 and p2 = m2/V2

V1 + V2 = 100 x 10-3
m1 + m2 = p
100 x 10-3
m1 + m2 = 800
100 x 10-3
m1 + m2 = 80
m1 = 45 kg and m2 = 35 kg

p1 = m1/V1
1500 = 45/V1
V1 = 0.03 m3

p2 = m2/V2
500 = 35/V2
V2 = 0.07 m3

Assessment:
Solve the following:
1. The mass of air in the room 3 m x 5 m x 20 m is known to be 350 kg. Find its density in kg/m 3:

Solution:
V=sxsxs
= 3 x 5 x 20
= 300 m3

p = m/V
= 350/300
= 1.17 kg/m3

2. The specific weight of a liquid is 58.5 lbf/ft3, what is the specific volume of the liquid in cm3/g?

Solution:
ϒ = 58.5 lbf/ft3 = 9189.60 N/m3

p = ϒ/g
= 9189.60/9.8066
= 937.08 kg/m3

V = 1/p
= 1/937.08
= 1.07 x 10-3 cm3/g
3. If the density of the gas is 0.003 slugs/ft3, what is the specific weight of the gas in N/m 3?

Solution:
ϒ = pg
= (0.003) (32.2) (14.59) (1/0.3048)2
= 15.17 N/m3

4. 100 g of water are mixed with 150 g of alcohol (ρ = 790 kg/m 3). What is the specific gravity of the
resulting mixture, assuming that the two fluids mix completely?

Solution:
mT = m1 + m2
mT = 0.1 + 0.15
= 0.25 kg

VT = V1 + V2 = m1/p1 + m2/p2
= 0.1/1000 + 0.15/790
= 2.90 x 10-4 m3

p = m/V
= 0.25/2.90 x 10-4
= 862.45 kg/m3

S.G = p/pWater
= 862.45/1000
= 0.86
