1 Study of MPPT system with series connection of solar panels
User Manual
Solar Panel:
In this charge controller system 50Wp of 2 solar panels are given to charge the battery
using PWM and MPPT charge controllers.
The parameters of 50Wp solar panel is
Open circuit voltage Voc = 21 V
Short circuit current Isc = 2.82 A
Voltage at maximum power Vm = 17 V
Current at maximum power Im = 2.63A
Maximum Power Pm = 50 Wp
No of solar cells = 36
Module dimension = 545*665*34 mm
Charge controller:
Charge controller system is a device is used to study the charge controlling techniques
to charge the battery. When battery is charging using solar special techniques will be
useful because of variable current source. With this device one can understand the
efficiency of the charge controllers
The principle is that if the output from the cell can be regulated to the voltage and
current levels needed to achieve a power output at this point, then the power generated
by the solar cell will be used most efficiently.
Working of MPPT-
A Maximum Power Point Tracking solar regulator will simulate the load required by
the solar panel to achieve the maximum power from the cell. The regulator will work
out at which point the cell will output the maximum power and derive from this the
voltage and current outputs required for maximum power to be achieved. It will then
calculate the load that it must simulate based on these voltage and current levels.
𝑉
𝑅=
𝐼
The regulator, now receiving the maximum amount of power in, will then regulate the
output according to what it is designed for .MPPT ensures that you get the most power
possible from your solar panels at any point in time. It is particularly effective during
low light level conditions. These calculations result in an output that delivers maximum
current at the required voltage at any point in time. During low light level situations it
will compensate for the low light level and find the new point at which the solar cell
delivers its maximum power output.

A PWM solar charge controller stands for “Pulse Width Modulation”. These operate by
making a connection directly from the solar array to the battery bank. During bulk
charging, when there is a continuous connection from the array to the battery bank, the
array output voltage is ‘pulled down’ to the battery voltage. As the battery charges, the
voltage of the battery rises, so the voltage output of the solar panel rises as well, using
more of the solar power as it charges. As a result, you need to make sure you match the
nominal voltage of the solar array with the voltage of the battery bank. *Note that when
we refer to a 12V solar panel that means a panel that is designed to work with a 12V
battery. The actual voltage of a 12V solar panel, when connected to a load, is close to 18

Vmp (Volts at maximum power). This is because a higher voltage source is required to

charge a battery. If the battery and solar panel both started at the same voltage, the
battery would not charge.
