The Pavegen system’s key components are a triangular composite tile surface and
electro-magnetic generators. As people step on the tiles, their weight causes the top surface to
vertically displace by 10mm. The linear actuation of the generators beneath, initiates a rotation
in their electro-magnetic mechanisms, which generates electrical energy. The triangular
arrangement ensures that the Pavegen technology maximises both energy output and real-
time data from each footstep. The Pavegen smart-flooring system tessellates into larger
rectangular arrays that can power a range of low voltage applications, and provide a unique
intractability.

2. Pavegen DIMENSIONS
3. PEDESTRIAN LOADING
The system is designed to take significant point and distributed loading. Some possible loading cases
are described below. The Pavegen technology can be used indoor and out for a variety of different
applications. The maximum loading of 9 kN/2023 lbf makes it extremely robust and durable.
FORCE 1
The downward force from the footstep
is loaded through the toecap. This
weight forces the plunger to displace,
spinning the internal flywheel to
generate electricity. 1

FORCE 2
Once the plunger has lowered, the
generator housing withstands any extra
weight to protect the mechanism from
high loads. An integrated stopper on 3
the bottom of the composite tile also
adds further protection.
FORCE 3
The glass fibre GRP sheet supports the

STAINLESS STEEL, ETCHED TOE CAP
We have designed the composite tile to be lightweight, without compromising its strength,
durability and resistance to heavy loads. We use glass reinforced plastic (GRP) and polyester
resin as the construction materials. The underside has an intricate rib design to ensure stability
and rigidity. The construction ensures the maximum transfer of energy per footstep and
ensures optimum performance for both interior and exterior locations.

The charge controller provides five main functions within a Pavegen installation.
oltage clamping: This ensures that the Pavegen generators are always loaded to maintain
V
1 a consistent user experience. It also prevents damage to voltage-sensitive components
attached to the power bus.
Energy storage control: Temperature compensated charging ensures the maximum battery
2 cycle life. When the batteries are fully charged excess load is diverted to the heatsink to
maintain a constant load.
Power flow and energy storage monitoring: The instantaneous power flowing both in and
3 out of the system and state of the energy storage device are potentially useful parameters.
The charge controller can measure these and make them available via a digital bus.
ontrol of auxiliary loads: The charge controller has a number of outputs which can be
C
4 used to drive external loads, such as LED lights. These outputs can be on, off or 1kHz PWM
signals.
Measurement of auxiliary voltage inputs: The charge controller has two analogue inputs
5 which can be used to monitor external sensors.
The charge controller has a metallic heatsink and case, which is isolated from internal conductors
and rated to pollution degree 3. It must be mounted in a sealed enclosure to protect the charge
controller from access by the general public.
