ARTIST TALK

Stephen Newton
Progression of my work
• I started my art path in drawing.
• My artwork up until this point has been more academic
and subject based.
• I would create with a distinct path to the finished project
based on what a project called for.
• Life experiences pushed me to explore sculptural based work
as a form of therapy.
• My artwork over the last 4 years has matured in its content as
well as the focus into what I want to create and why.
Materials/Medium
• I have started to lean more heavily towards
ceramics in my recent Art.
• Working with my hands in ceramics helps
me feel directly connected to the piece and
the process.
• The materials is a huge factor, but the
physical nature of the sculpting process is
calming and soothing to me.

• I also enjoy working with other

mediums such as drawing and painting but
prefer more sculptural work.
My Work
• I have found a new focus on
texture and finishes in my work.
• Texture is directly connected
to my chronic pain and the WHY
of my art.
• I have begun to explore
different material and
processes to achieve the same
desired results
