STILL LIFE
Still life art has everyday objects that are important to someone

Objects in a still life can take one a new meaning

Artists painted a still life because it “taught them to see”

It helped them study the shapes and colors that they were trying to
master

MEDIUM:OIL ON CANVAS
OIL PAINTING

• Painting in oil colours , a medium consisting of pigments

suspended in drying oils.
• The outstanding facility with which fusion of tones or colour is
achieved makes it unique among fluid painting mediums;
• at the same time , satisfactory linear treatment and crisp effects
are easily obtained.
• Opaque, transparent and translucent painting all lie within its
range, and
• It is unsurpassed for textural variation.

painting surfaces)
• Small, medium, and large paint brushes
• Rainbow colors of paint
• Artist's pallet

• Thinner
He painted colorful flower in a pot because he wanted to
decorate a room in his studio for his wife.

He intended to paint a series of flower paintings because

he sees flowers as his wife.
Those flowers were painted in all stages of life , from
opening bloom to wilted and dying.
He was not trying to make an exact copy reality but trying
to express emotions
He attempted to invest the objects in his paintings with
significance and symbolism.

Inspiration
Techniques
• Oil painting techniques often begin with the artist
sketching the subject onto the canvass with charcoal or
thinned paint.
• Oil paint usually mixed with linseed oil, artist grade mineral
spirits or other solvents to make the paint thinner, faster or
slower drying.
• Traditionally, paint was transferred to the painting surface
using paintbrushes but there are other methods, including
using palette knives and rags.
Techniques
• Oil paint remains longer than many other types of artist's
materials, enabling the artist the color, texture, or form of the
figure
• At times, the painter might even remove an entire layer of paint
and began anew.
• This can be done with a rag and some turpentine for a time le the
paint is wet but after a while the hardened layer must be scraped.
• Oil paint dries by oxidation, not evaporation and usually dry within
a span of two weeks.
PROCESS

• A SIMPLE STILL LIFE OF SOME

DFERENT FLOWERS.
• STEP 1:
• Firstly he painted a wash of
brown red thinned out with a liitle
medium to cover the entire
canvass and then drew on a
composition using thinned burnt
umber with a small brush.
• Also altered the position of the
flowers in the bowl and pot to
adapt a composition to a
square/rectangular format
instead of a portrait one.
STEP 2 :
Started loosely blocking in the
background and the table cloth, the bowl
and the pot as well as the pears .
He also made some amendments to the
initial drawing.
He decided to add a violin to the
composition.

STEP 3 :
Started doing the painting with vintage
contrast with warm colours of the flowers.
He darkened the shadow of some parts
on the backround .
STEP 4 :
Details on the bowl and pot and some
darkening of the shadows under the fruit
were painted next.
He also applied some more depth to the
flowers and leaves.

FINAL STEP :
He worked all over the canvas, tweaking
ad adding highlights, deepening shadows
where needed.
