3 Introduction to Functions
Objective: SWBAT determine if tables, mapping diagrams,
and coordinates are functions
Recap of Function Video
Vocabulary:
Domain: is the set of input values, x’s
Range: is the set of output values, y’s
DOMAINX RANGEY

One-to-one: assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the
range
Function: Relates an input set to an output set and is one-to-one
Story time!
*not clickbait*

You are sitting at home doing….. Well probably not math.

You hear a strange knock on the door. You stare at the door suspiciously.
A letter slides from underneath. It has a familiar logo. “A Hogwarts letter?”
You open it up with excitement. “I am pleased to inform you that you have been accepted
to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.” You jump with excitement. “Yes!!” you say.
From outside the door you hear, “Yer a wizard, Jerry” “Who’s Jerry?” you ask.
You pack up your things, head to diagon alley to buy supplies, then to Hogwarts.
You enter the grand hall and await your turn for the sorting hat ceremony.
“It’s your turn, dear” Professor McGonagall says to you.
You approach the stool and sit. The anticipation…. Which house are you?
Which House are you in? Read the traits then, circle one.

Gryffindor Slytherin Hufflepuff Ravenclaw

Let’s create a mapping diagram

Input→ Students Output→ House

Function: Sorting Hat Gryffindor

Slytherin

Hufflepuff

Ravenclaw
What Happens if the sorting hat does this?

Input→ Students Output→ House

Function: Sorting Hat Gryffindor

Allison
Slytherin
Jonathan

Mrs. C
Hufflepuff
Ms. B
Ravenclaw

Functions must relate every input to only ONE output.

It must be one-to-one.
Now let’s compare: Mapping diagrams
Which of these is a function?

How do you know?

Remember: Functions must relate every input(x) to only ONE output(y). It must be one-to-one.
Now with numbers!

What are you looking for to determine if a mapping diagram is a
function?
One-to-one vs. one-to-many: Table
Let’s say you press ‘B4’ expecting Ruffles, instead you get Ruffles and BBQ Lays. Score!!
But is the vending machine functioning? How can you tell by looking at the table?

Function:
Input → Code Output → Chips
Vending Machine
A1 Doritos

B4 Ruffles

C2 Cheese Cheetos

D1 Hot Cheetos

B4 BBQ Lays
Let’s look at another Example!
Which of these is a function?
Input→ Letters Output→Order Input→ Letters Output→Order

A 1 A 1
B 2 A 2
C 3 C 3
D 4 D 4
E 5 E 5

How do you know?

What are you looking for to determine if a table is a function?
What about coordinates? Determine which set of
coordinates below is a function.

Remember: Functions must relate every input(x) to only ONE output(y). It must be one-to-one.
Create 2 sets of coordinates. One that is a function and
one that is not a function.

Is a function
( ___ , ___ ) Is NOT
a function
( ___ , ___ )
( ___ , ___ ) ( ___ , ___ )
( ___ , ___ ) ( ___ , ___ )
( ___ , ___ ) ( ___ , ___ )
Remember: Functions must relate every input(x) to only ONE output(y). It must be one-to-one.
Takeaways:
A function relates everything in the domain/input to ONE thing in the range/output.

Yan cannot have the same input go to two different outputs. You can have different
inputs go to the same output.

Just like in Hogwarts sorting ceremony! Ms.B cannot be in Ravenclaw and

Slytherin (not one-to-one) BUT Ms. B and Mrs. Correa can both be in Hufflepuff.
