1. Basic Concepts of Graphic Design
1.1 Color
Color is an essential element of graphic design because it
is applied to evoke a certain mood and emotion that
harmoniously work together to create a unifying visual appeal. It
is also utilized to organize and emphasize other existing
elements in the artwork or design – like highlighting a text or
placing a focal point over a subject.

1.2 Typography
Typography refers to the art and technique of arranging
text in a creative yet legible manner. Apart from the
comprehensible functionality, it is also employed to complement
the overall tone of the message that works well with the rest of
the elements of the design.

1.3 Images
Images are not just limited to photographs, but also
includes graphics and other illustrations. Placing an image in
graphic design usually sparks an interest towards the subject of
your message, producing a visually appealing and striking
composition.
Example of graphic design:

2. Three (3) Principles of Design
2.1 Proximity
Proximity is the process of placing related elements
together. Elements that are not related to that group should be
separated to show that these elements are not related to that
group.

2.2 Contrast
Contrast means one element is opposite to the other
element. Contrast helps you to catch the viewer’s eye, create a
direction, or giving emphasis to something.

2.3 Repetition
Repetition simply means to use of the same typefaces,
color palettes, or other elements to achieve consistency in your
composition. This creates unity in your composition or make
your projects connected to each other.

Three (3) Techniques of Design

2.4 Use of color schemes
Adding color to a design creates a unifying visual appeal
to your overall composition. Likewise, applying a color scheme
or using a color palette can do a great job in complementing the
consistency and uniformity of your design.

2.5 Adding shadows

Oftentimes, the key to a visually engaging design is the
utilization of shadows in certain key elements. Shadows are
important in playing the perception of depth and weight of an
object in your design rather than a flat-out form.
2.6 Applying color gradient
Similar to the use of color schemes, using a color gradient
also adds a striking visual appeal to your design. Subtle
gradients can also be used to soften geometric shapes and
create a focal point in your graphics, illustrations, or artworks.

3. Six (6) Importance of White Space in Design

3.1 Improved comprehension
Spaces between lines in a paragraph makes the content
legible and easily scannable to the readers/viewers. If the texts
in the design are too close, it would be too hard to comprehend
and make sense.

3.2 Focus and attention

Macro white spaces help guide the viewers to the focus
area in the design. The function of white space is also to
highlight a specific part in the design, like emphasizing other
elements to accentuate its purpose.

3.3 Increased interaction rate

If used wisely, white space in design helps the viewer to
get the message quickly even without looking at the
instructions. A functional use of white space makes it easier for
viewers to understand the design.

3.4 Guide the user through local grouping

White space helps us achieve the proximity of our design.
Organizing our content through local grouping makes it easier
for users to navigate, for example, a designed user interface.

3.5 Branding and Design tone

Looking back at the steps of brand identity design, the
way how we are going to apply white spaces in our design
helps us create our own brand’s personality. Likewise, we must
be wary of placing white spaces in our design to avoid
unnecessary negative spaces.

3.6 Creates a breathing space for users

Having enough white space makes our eye rest, helps us
breathe, and not be overwhelmed with the information.
Maximizing content in every space will only make our
composition too stuffy.
