Beyond the use of materials the goal for my students is to learn to experiment with the

materials I give them. The understanding of this experimentation will be determined by their
artist statements, as well as the process videos they will submit at the end of the assignment. The
goal of my lessons are always to push my students to do something they are passionate about
while also making them uncomfortable if the creation will even turn out the way they originally
thought. Being in my art room will be different for my students, because my room is and will be
a safe zone for them to come to. I know my students are required to create art in my classroom,
however I refuse to force my students to make art if they are not in the right mental space. A way
to appease the students' need for a break and the schools demand for work; I will have my
students work on projects that will appear to be pointless and absentminded. However, it will
either help them with their current project or will become its own project towards the end of the
year.
The flow of my classroom will be of a student centered approach. My students will tell
me what they want to learn and cover and I will simply be the guide that helps them achieve
these goals. Whilst in my care there is nothing I plan to hide from students. I plan on teaching
my students about lesser known artist who relate to the topics we are learning, while also
teaching them about female artist, multicultural artist, queer artist, and local artist that might get
overlooked in the art world. I also plan on implementing different languages in my classroom
such as sign language, spanish, french, etc.
The way I will manage my class will be in an organized manner with materials in certain
areas and student lead cleaning. This will be done to create a sense of self and responsibility
being that they are the ones keeping check of inventory and cleaning up after themselves. It will
cause them to respect the space in which they occupy. Another form of classroom management
will be the use of IEPs in my classroom. This will be done on a weekly basis where my students
tell me their goals and self reflect about the progress they have made. I will not overly enforce
punishment on my children, due to the fact I understand that there are bad days along with
personal things at home that can be affecting their behavior. I will simply allow my students to
go to an isolated area in my room that is designated for behavioral reflection, then talk to them
when I get the chance to step away. Another way I will allow for my students to reflect or reach
their goals in a reasonable way is by using fidget toys or allowing them to listen to music or eat
food in my room.
In my room the question of why I create art will be answered through self reflection,
experimentation, and discussion. The goal I have as a teacher is to make my students dive into
what it means to be an artist and what it means for them to create work. This self reflection and
experimentation plays into how I personally create art. I typically focus on making things that
talk about the feminie mystique, african americanism, and the human body. I create these works
in order to figure out how I move about in the space I occupy. I try to shine a light on all aspects
of these ideals that I focus on in my work, and I plan on doing the same thing when it comes to
allowing my students to express themselves in the way that they see fit. As a teacher I do not
want to be the one that stunts the artistic growth of my students, because I am afraid of what the
district has to say about it. It is my job to defend my students and be their biggest advocate.
As a teacher; especially one in the day of Covid I have to be able to adapt easily to any
circumstance that is thrown at me while also being able to give my students the best possible
chance. I will approach virtual learning by having a google drive that is the mother server for my
children that houses all of the information they might need such as tutorials, powerpoints, notes,
and demonstrations. I will upload all of the information at the end of the day so that students can
not attempt to work ahead, but the ones who were absent or might need to review something can
still do so. It will be a requirement if I have to teach virtual that my students will have to post in
their individual google folders and entry of a sketchbook with notes, or whatever it is we were
doing for the day. Virtual learning will not stop me in my need to make my students feel
connected to me or one another. I would still open my class sessions with a mantra and allow for
my students that might need to talk to me privately to pop into a breakout room where I talk to
them, get them settled down mentally and jump back into the main call. Or, talk to the students
after the class period. I would also have night events on certain days before they have a big
assignment due that I have a zoom party where we all work on projects together and talk to one
another in the process.
My values as an art educator truly revealed themselves while working on the
Drawing Dirty Big Idea assignment in the form of wanting organized chaos. It was originally a
struggle for me to create something that was supposed to be dirty, because I for one do not enjoy
being dirty or getting dirty. I did realize I enjoy more of an abstract approach to getting dirty in a
way that is pushing the boundaries of what I am being taught and how I want to teach my
students. This was seen in the final outcome of my drawing dirty in its appearance of minimal
dirty with an organized layout and presentation. The dirt only played a part in my piece by
adding texture instead of being the main focus of the driving point of my piece. I was allowed to
take something that was supposed to be chaotic and all over the place but put a more organized
spin on it. This will be implemented in my classroom in how I go about teaching my students.
They will think I am doing things randomly with them and that everything I do does not go
together, but it will not be until they sit back and really reflect on the things I have said and done
in the classroom for them to realize it happened for a reason and it serves a bigger picture.
