SECTION 27 11 00 - COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT ROOM FITTINGS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

1.4 DEFINITIONS

A. Basket Cable Tray: A fabricated structure consisting of wire mesh bottom and side rails.
B. BICSI: Building Industry Consulting Service International.
C. Channel Cable Tray: A fabricated structure consisting of a one-piece, ventilated- bottom
or solid-bottom channel not exceeding 6 inches (152 mm) in width.
D. Ladder Cable Tray: A fabricated structure consisting of two longitudinal side rails
connected by individual transverse members (rungs).
E. LAN: Local area network.
F. RCDD: Registered Communications Distribution Designer.
G. Solid-Bottom or Non ventilated Cable Tray: A fabricated structure consisting of a bottom
without ventilation openings within integral or separate longitudinal side rails.
H. Trough or Ventilated Cable Tray: A fabricated structure consisting of integral or separate
longitudinal rails and a bottom having openings sufficient for the passage of air and using
75 percent or less of the plan area of the surface to support cables.

1.5 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include construction details, material
descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes for
equipment racks and cabinets. Include rated capacities, operating characteristics,
electrical characteristics, and furnished specialties and accessories.
B. Shop Drawings: For communications equipment room fittings. Include plans, elevations,
sections, details, and attachments to other work.
1. Detail equipment assemblies and indicate dimensions, weights, loads, required
clearances, method of field assembly, components, and location and size of each
field connection.
2. Equipment Racks and Cabinets: Include workspace requirements and access for
cable connections.
3. Grounding: Indicate location of grounding bus bar and its mounting detail showing
standoff insulators and wall mounting brackets.

1.6 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

A. Qualification Data: For Installer, qualified layout technician, installation supervisor, and
field inspector.

1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Cabling Installer shall be personnel certified by BICSI on staff or


approved equivalent as per Manufacturer recommendation and local code requirement.
1. Layout Responsibility: Preparation of Shop Drawings shall be under the direct
supervision of Commercial Installer, Level 2 or approved equivalent as per
Manufacturer recommendation and local code requirement.
2. Installation Supervision: Installation shall be under the direct supervision of Level 2
Installer, who shall be present at all times when Work of this Section is performed
at Project site.
3. Field Inspector: Shall be registered by BICSI as RCDD to perform the on-site
inspection or approved equivalent as per local code requirement.
B. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA
70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.
C. Telecommunications Pathways and Spaces: Comply with TIA/EIA-569-C.
D. Grounding: Comply with ANSI-J-STD-607-B.

1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install equipment frames and cable trays
until spaces are enclosed and weather-tight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and
work above ceilings is complete.

1.9 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate layout and installation of communications equipment with Owner's


telecommunications and LAN equipment and service suppliers. Coordinate service
entrance arrangement with local exchange carrier.
1. Meet jointly with telecommunications and LAN equipment suppliers, local
exchange carrier representatives, and Owner to exchange information and agree
on details of equipment arrangements and installation interfaces.
2. Record agreements reached in meetings and distribute them to other participants.
3. Adjust arrangements and locations of distribution frames, cross-connects, and
patch panels in equipment rooms to accommodate and optimize arrangement and
space requirements of telephone switch and LAN equipment.
4. Adjust arrangements and locations of equipment with distribution frames, cross-
connects, and patch panels of cabling systems of other communications, electronic
safety and security, and related systems that share space in the equipment room.
B. Coordinate location of power raceways and receptacles with locations of communications
equipment requiring electrical power to operate.

1.10 COMMUNICATIONS ROOMS GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Communications rooms must be dedicated to designated equipment and services only:


1. Space shall not be used for storage of equipment not related to designated
equipment and services.
2. Hazardous or corrosive materials shall not be stored in the space.
3. Piping, ductwork and distribution of power, not related to designated equipment
and services shall not pass through or be located within the space.
4. Spaces intended to contain metallic cabling shall be located away from sources of
electromagnetic interference. Examples of such noise sources include electrical
power supply transformers, motors and generators, X-ray equipment and radio or
radar transmitters.
B. Each communication room shall be equipped with fire detection, fire-extinguishing
system and prevention devices.
C. Backboards: Plywood, fire-retardant treated, 3/4 by 48 by 96 inches or approved
equivalent. Comply with requirements for plywood backing panels specified in Section
"Rough Carpentry”
D. Communications room walls shall extend from floor slab to ceiling deck, with a clear
height not less than 3 meters and with no drop ceilings (false ceilings) installed to allow
the installation of high-level or ceiling-mounted pathway systems.
E. Cable trays or ladder racks shall be used to distribute and protect cables inside
communication rooms or in-between rooms through finished wall penetrations.
F. Each communication room shall be provided with cable ladders/trays or cable trunking,
routed overhead the equipment racks/cabinets for overhead cable management, a similar
arrangement shall be provided for cables distribution from below in a raised floor system.
G. Penetrations requirements shall be as per BICSI - Telecommunications Distribution
Methods Manual (TDMM), 14th Edition or approved equivalent.
H. Floors shall have anti-static properties.
I. Communications rooms with frames or cabinets that are to be cabled from below, shall
be provided with access floor (raised floor) systems of sufficient under-floor depth to
enable routing of underfloor pathway systems and other underfloor services.
J. The door of the Communications Rooms room should comply with BICSI -
Telecommunications Distribution Methods Manual (TDMM), 14th Edition or approved
equivalent to local building code requirements:
1. Open outward (e.g., if local building codes permit).
2. Have the same fire rating as the room wall.
3. Not be less than ≈0.91 m (3 ft) wide by ≈1.98 m (6.5 ft) high.
K. Environmental Conditions:
1. Install monitoring sensors with dedicated environmental controls operating 24
hours a day, 365 days a year in the communications rooms.
2. Provide ventilation in the communications rooms to dissipate heat generated by

active equipment.
3. Provide continuous operating ranges of temperature and humidity as given by:

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 PATHWAYS

A. General Requirements: Comply with TIA/EIA-569-C.


B. Cable trays or cable ladder racks shall be used to distribute and protect cables inside
communication rooms or in-between rooms through finished wall penetrations.
C. Each communication room shall be provided with cable ladders/cable trays or cable
trunking, routed overhead the equipment racks/cabinets for overhead cable
management, A similar arrangement shall be provided for cables distribution from below
in a raised floor system.
D. Cable Support: NRTL or approved equivalents labeled. Cable support brackets shall be
designed to prevent degradation of cable performance and pinch points that could
damage cable. Cable tie slots fasten cable ties to brackets.

1. Comply with NFPA 70 or UL 2043 for fire-resistant and low-smoke-producing


characteristics.
2. Support brackets with cable tie slots for fastening cable ties to brackets.
3. Lacing bars, spools, J-hooks, and D-rings.
4. Straps and other devices.

2.2 LADDER RACK SYSTEMS

A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements.


B. Description: Electro-Plated Zinc Galvanizing: Straight sections shall be made from steel
meeting the minimum mechanical properties of ASTM A 510, Grade 1008 and shall be
electro-plated zinc in accordance with ASTM B633, Type III, SC-1. Or Hot Dipped
Galvanized as per NEMA standard.
1. Comply with TIA-569-C or NEMA VE-2
C. Fittings and Accessories:
1. All fittings shall be field formed, from straight sections, in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions.
2. All splicing assemblies shall be UL or approved equivalent as an Equipment Ground
Conductor (EGC). When using powder coated wire basket as an EGC, the paint must
be completely removed at all contact points of splice/ground bolt attachment.
3. Trapeze hangers or center support hangers shall be supported by 1/4 inch or 3/8
inch diameter rods.
4. Special accessories shall be furnished as required to protect, support and install a

wire basket or cable ladder rack support system.


D. Conduit and Boxes: Comply with requirements in Section "Raceway and Boxes for
Electrical Systems."
1. Outlet boxes shall be plastic or steel depending upon the raceway system. For
exposed Installation, outlet boxes shall be either cast steel or heavy-duty plastic,
rigidly connected to the conduit system by suitable bushings.

2.3 EQUIPMENT RACKS AND CABINETS

A. General Requirements:
1. Freestanding and wall-mounting, modular-steel or aluminum units designed for
telecommunications terminal support and coordinated with dimensions of units to
be supported.

3. Permanent rack mount unit markings shall be provided in the mounting rails
showing the position of each of the rack mount unit (RMU or RU) spaces.

10. Module Dimensions:
• 800 mm (width) x 1200 mm (depth) in increments of 25mm (0.98”),
compatible with EIA/ECA-310-E standard, 19-inch (482.6-mm) panel
mounting, 2.1 m high, 45 RU mounting space or approved equivalent as per
equipment requirement and equipment supplier recommendation.

• Dimensions shall be coordinated with the actual selected active and passive
equipment.
11. Equipment load bearing capacity: Shall not be less than 1134 kg (2500 lb) static load
when the load is evenly distributed or approved equivalent as per Manufacturer
recommendation for load bearing capacity of equipment rack/cabinets.
12. Adjustable mounting rails that slide front to rear for greater space utilization.
13. The fastening system used to mount equipment and telecommunications
components shall be through EIA/ECA-310-E Universal hole pattern threaded
screws or square punched rail holes to accept cage nut hardware.
14. Vertical power strip, extending the full height of the cabinet.
15. All cabinets keyed alike.
C. Modular Freestanding Network Cabinets, Steel and aluminum: Same specifications as
Modular Freestanding Server Cabinets but module dimensions: 800 mm (width) x 800 mm
(depth) or 600 mm (width) x 600 mm (depth) or 600mm (width) x 800mm (depth) as the
Dimensions shall be coordinated with the actual selected active and passive equipment
and the room space.
D. Modular Wall Cabinets steel or aluminum:
1. Mountable to wall or backboard
2. Enclosed with lockable doors for security and aesthetic appeal
3. 19” rack-mount width
4. Standard EIA-310-D hole pattern
5. Fixed and swing-out designs for easier installation
6. Wall-mounted, floor-supported cabinets offer up to 1000 lb (453.6 kg) static load
rating depend on equipment installation requirement and Manufacturer
recommendation.
E. Cable Management for Equipment Frames:

1. Metal, with integral wire retaining fingers or approved equivalent.

2. Baked-polyester powder coat finish.

3. Horizontal or Vertical cable management panels shall have front and rear channels, with
covers depends on installed equipment requirement

4. horizontal or vertical crossover cable manager at the top of each relay rack, with a
minimum height of one rack units each.

B. Power Strips in free-standing cabinets:


1. Horizontal or Vertical mounting.
2. A minimum of two front facing and two rear facing, 20 Amp, 250V AC, 60Hz socket
outlets complying with standard of socket outlets used in KSA.
3. LED indicator lights for power status.
4. Cord connected with 3 m line cord and KSA standard power inlet.

5. Rocker-type on-off switch, illuminated when in on position with cover that prevents
accidental shut-off
6. Surge Protection Device (SPD) selected in accordance with IEC as part of a
coordinated set of SPD’s for the building.

2.2 GROUNDING

A. Comply with requirements in Division 27 Section "Grounding and Bonding for


Telecommunications Systems." for grounding conductors and connectors.

B. Telecommunications Main Bus Bar:

1. Connectors: Mechanical type, cast silicon bronze, solderless compression-type


wire terminals, and long-barrel, single or two-bolt connection to ground bus bar.
2. Ground Bus Bar: Copper, minimum 6mm thick by 100mm wide with standard
holes size and spaced apart.
3. Stand-Off Insulators: Comply with UL 891 for use in switchboards, 600 V. Lexan or
PVC, impulse tested at 5000 V.

C. Comply with ANSI-J-STD-607-B.

2.3 LABELING

A. Comply with TIA/EIA-606-A or UL 969 for a system of labeling materials, including label
stocks, laminating adhesives, and inks used by label printers.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION

A. Comply with NECA 1 or with appropriate local building codes.

B. Comply with BICSI TDMM or appropriate local building codes for layout and installation
of communications equipment rooms.

C. Cable Trays: Comply with NEMA VE 2 or TIA/EIA-569-C-7.

D. Bundle, lace, and train conductors and cables to terminal points without exceeding
manufacturer's limitations on bending radii. Install lacing bars and distribution spools.

3.2 GROUNDING

A. Install grounding according to appropriate local building codes, "Grounding, Bonding,


and Electrical Protection as Specifications Section “Grounding and Bonding”

B. Comply with ANSI-J-STD-607-B.

C. Locate grounding bus bar to minimize the length of bonding conductors. Fasten to wall
allowing at least 2-inch (50-mm) clearance behind the grounding bus bar. Connect
grounding bus bar with a minimum No. 4 AWG grounding electrode conductor from
grounding bus bar to suitable electrical building ground.

D. Bond metallic equipment to the grounding bus bar, using not smaller than No. 6 AWG
equipment grounding conductor.

1. Bond the shield of shielded cable to the grounding bus bar in communications
rooms and spaces.

3.3 IDENTIFICATION

A. Identify system components, wiring, and cabling complying with TIA/EIA-606-A or


approved equivalent. Comply with requirements in Division 27 Section "Identification for
Communications Systems."

B. Comply with requirements in Division 09 Section "Interior Painting" for painting


backboards. For fire-resistant plywood, do not paint over manufacturer's label.

C. Paint and label colors for equipment identification shall comply with TIA/EIA-606-A for
Class 3 level of administration or approved equivalent.

D. Labels shall be preprinted or computer-printed type.
