Staring from somewhere

When I turned sixteenth years, I started looking for jobs however my luck was really poor

since most jobs I would apply for needed to be at least 17 or 18 years old. Once I hit my

seventeenth birthday I was determined to actually find a job where they would accept me, and

for my luck, the job that did accept me was a Mexican Restaurant.

That’s how everything started, at the beginning I would only clean the restroom, windows

and create the little bags of tortilla chips for the to-go orders but sometimes whenever they

needed someone to help in the back, packing the food I would try to be as fast as I could, I would

get scared, the pressure on me was not what I was ready for. As I started working more and more

time, I would sometimes become a cashier, answer the phone, and as the youngest waitress, the

expectations for me were to interact with customers.

I became a keystone component for the waiters as I progressed in this job. I taught them

how to handle groups of dissatisfied clients and the basics of customer service. As a result, I

developed organizational skills and improved my ability to communicate effectively to solve

difficulties. I devised more efficient ways for home delivery and restaurant service. This resulted

in not just a better relationship with my coworkers, but also a more honest and fun relationship

with my bosses. It instilled in me a strong work ethic that reminded me of my forefathers'

diligent farmers.

However, by mid-July I became the only waitress besides my two bosses and the cookers,

working from Monday to Friday up to 20 hours a week or more sometimes since it was summer

vacations. Starting that time, I started believing that in order to achieve efficiency and

productivity in a workplace between employees and managers, the manager did not need to be

firm and attention but to have the vision of a leader and empathy.

As a result of laboring in a small business, people may think that I want to study

something related to accounting, entrepreneur, marketing, and finance but in reality, I see myself

as a future cardiothoracic surgeon since I believe that in order to succeed in this field its

necessary to have adaptability, perseverance, dedication, strategy, excellent communication skills

to deal with colleagues and patients, and good organizational ability.
