ABSTRACT

The piston is one of the most important elements in the internal combustion engine. The main function of the piston is to
transfer the thermal energy generated by burning of air-fuel mixture to crank shaft. Due to continuous working of piston,
thermal loads and thermal stresses acting on the piston, life of the piston decreases. In order to overcome piston failures,
we modeled 4 types of pistons by using CATIA V5 3d modeling software. The structural and thermal analysis are
performed by using ANYSIS software. After completion of analysis, the values of thermal stresses, heat flux, total
deformation and temperatures of different piston models are compared.

use different piston models and we can apply different
materials for the piston.

There are different types of functions performed by the

piston:

1. The piston causes the suction, compression, power

stroke, exhaust strokes in every cycle.

2. The thermal energy generated in combustion

chamber is converted into mechanical energy with the
help of connecting rod and crank shaft.

3. Piston is guided by the connecting rod, the piston pin

used to connect piston and connecting rod to perform all
operations in IC engine.

Most of the papers discussed about piston materials and

their thermal performance only. They didn’t consider the
structural performance. Temperature differences
between the Engine Head and the Piston Cylinder have

conditions structural analysis can be performed in Ansys
work bench.

FIG1. TYPES OF PISTON MODELS

Temperature and heat transfer coefficient of

piston

The piston head is the top of the piston, due to the

Expansion of hot gases the thermal load acting on the
top of piston we can apply the thermal load as 859.7oC.
The heat transfer due to convection mode from the side
walls of the piston takes place at atmospheric
temperature 298.15k and the heat transfer coefficient is
taken as 3200 w/mm2k , for steady state thermal analysis.

Thermal load applied on the piston

The thermal loads acting on the piston due to the

expansion gases, the pressure load applied on the piston
is taken as 6.5Mpa, we can provide the friction less

Finite Element analysis of piston

In finite element method we can perform thermal and

structural analysis of 4 different types of pistons by using
Ansys work bench. In this analysis, we get accurate
results according to our requirements.

Conclusion

• After performing thermal and structural

analysis by using Aluminium alloy. Among the
four types of pistons, flat and dome type pistons
give the low stress and deformation values
compared to the remaining pistons which are
noted above.

From all the above tables we can conclude that the flat
Fig 18 Total deformation in cup type piston and dome type pistons give stresses equal to 80.11and
80.24Mpa respectively, which are efficient than other
two types. Likewise in structural analysis also flat and
dome type pistons give lower deformation values equal to
0.02mm and 0.019 mm respectively. From the above
information, we can conclude that flat and dome type
pistons are efficient compared to other pistons.
