Discussion Assignment Unit 5

1. What does it mean to take ownership of your own learning? In your response, describe the
difference between active and passive learning.

“Personalised learning is not what is done to the learner or about tailoring the learning. It about
helping each learner to identify and develop the skills they need to support and enhance their own
learning so that the agency and self-advocacy can be realised” (McClaskey 2018). “Ownership of
learning means that the student is motivated, engaged and self-directed. It means that the
student(s) can monitor their own progress and are able to reflect on their own learning through the
mastery of the content” (Make Learning Personal, n.d). It means that a student has the skill to
independently invent their own learning experience, through the identification and application of
appropriate learning materials and tools. This means a student(s) is/are able to identify and
implement a learning strategy(s) that best works for them and that guarantee success in their
learning or studies.

Active and passive learning are an integral part of the learning process. They are very important
because they help in acquiring knowledge and skill in the learning process. Active learning is a
learning method where not only the teacher is in control of the learning process but students are
also given a chance to immensely participate in the learning process. It can be said that this strategy
is student centred. This strategy promotes divergence of thought, promotes critical thinking ability
skills from everyone participating. It allows students to question, criticise and trusting one’s own
judgement. Passive learning on the other hand is the traditional form of learning whereby the
teacher controls the learning process and provides most of the information to the students. It states
that the students are to receive the information by being passive, trusting and unquestioning

2. What is the role of the course instructor in the learning process?

Course instructors are an important part of the learning process, they have a lot to
do in regard to the learning process. Without them the learning process is not at all
easy, which is why they form part of this process to coordinate it and ensure that it
all goes well. They provide the course information and they are to ensure that it’s
timely and accurate. They provides students with access to their work and they
evaluate the student’s feedback on such work and the examinations that the students
may have. They are to ensure that examination are conducted with honesty and
integrity, so they are to maintain the overall security towards the exams (University of
Minnesota, n.d). It doesn’t end here but because of the limited number of words
allotted for this particular question, I’ll end here

3. What is the role of peer assessment in the learning process?

Peer assessment provides a platform for students to criticise and provides sound
feedback to each other on their work. It equips and improves the student’s skills to
lifelong assessment and in providing effective feedback to others. It enhances self-
improvement thorough reflection. In conclusion peer assessment improves the
learning process (Centre for Teaching Innovation, n.d).
