Introduction to Architecture
Dear Ivy Camps USA Camper and Family,

Welcome to Introduction to Architecture! We are excited to explore this creative and

dynamic field together! In this course you will develop a deeper understanding of
architecture and the different career options available. You will gain a better
understanding of the day-to-day work architects engage in, and develop new skills
along the way! Throughout camp you will be designing and creating a 3D CAD model
of your building for a design bid, you will get a taste of what architects do in their jobs
to see if it is the right fit for you. You will also develop communication skills, project
management skills, analysis skills, presentation skills, and critical thinking skills; all of
which will help you get a great start towards your future university studies and career!
Materials you will need:
● Printed Camptivity packet (this packet!)
● Pen/pencil
● Technology (laptop/tablet/phone) to access Zoom
● SketchUp account (free account created with personal email address)

Outline of the session:

● Part 1: Foundations and Blueprints
● Part 2: Design & Environment
● Part 3: Aesthetics
● Part 4: Timeline and Budget
● Part 5: Bid Presentations and Careers in Architecture

Cameras: Per Ivy Camps policy, students must turn their cameras on during their
class session in order to create an inclusive and interactive environment. Should your
child not be able to turn on their camera, please provide a written note ahead of time
to info@ivycamps.org.

Preparation: To set your camper up for success, we encourage you to find a quiet
space to set up the computer, ensure that there aren’t distractions around (such as
other electronics, family members, etc.), and make sure that your camper comes ready
with all needed materials.

All our best,

The Team at Ivy Camps USA

Design Commission Project:
Throughout camp you will be working on a design for a bid. You will be designing a building to
meet the needs of a client, including their budget and timeline. Use the Client Overview
information below to help direct your design.

Client Overview:
Congratulations! You have a client that is interested in your amazing architectural designs! They
have just purchased a piece of land and are working with several different architectural firms to
obtain bids for the project. They are ready to build their dream home, and very excited about the
possibility of you helping to make their dream a reality! Your task is to design a building that meets
their needs, is aesthetically pleasing (to them), is functional for their use, and is aligned with their
budget and timeline. They are also interested in the most sustainable plan. They want the building
to last a long time, and are also conscious about their environmental footprint.

Building Needs: The clients are looking to build their dream home! They have been renting for
years while looking for land. Now that they have secured the land they are ready t build, but need
an architect to design a space that will be functional for them for years to come. The clients consist
of a husband and wife, no children but they do have one dog and two cats. The husband is a retired
environmental consultant who values being able to connect with the land around him. He want a
“nature house” that will enable him to feel outside even when inside. It is also important for him to
have a den or office to retreat to for reading and writing. The wife works from home, so she will
need a quiet space to work during the day that will not conflict with her husband retirement
hobbies. She also enjoys watercolor painting, and will need a space in the home with good light for
her art. However, she doesn't want to have a dedicated art studio, so this area will need to be a dual
purpose room (ie, a corner in the living room or office, etc.) The couple loves their animals, and the
animals are considered pets and will be inside the house frequently. They want the house to also be
cat and dog friendly, including windows their medium size dog can look out and areas the cats can
jump to to get away from the dog when the dog get hyper. They like to entertain and have friends
over for dinner. However, they are also very private people and want to ensure the social and private
spaces of their home are very separate. They work hard, so they enjoy a space to relax when they
are stressed. A Bubble bath with a great view is their ideal way to unplug, so the masterbatch will
need to have a “spa” feel to it.

Land/Lot overview: The build site consists of 3 acres of level land. You will not need to work with
any challenging topography or water drainage for this project.

Codes/Deed Restrictions: The county codes limit use for residential sites. There are no mobile
homes allowed, all plumbing and sewage must be standard (no greywater or composting toilets
allowed, only city sewer and approved septic systems). The only deed restriction is for the footprint
of any new structure. The footprint for the main residence must be between 1,500 and 3,000 square
feet.

Budget: They have established a maximum budget of $600,000, but would appreciate if the bids
came in under budget.

Timeline: They would like to move into their new home within 18 months of the bid acceptance,
but are willing to negotiate the timeline above any other factor.

Architects must account for environmental factors, such as topography, soil
composition, water, wind, and sun! Use the sun diagrams and information below to
plan for the construction of a new school building.
Sunnyville USA: Use Diagram A, showing the imaginary town of Sunnyville, USA, to
answer the questions below.

1. What time is sunrise on June 21 in Sunnyville?

2. What time is sunset on June 21 in Sunnyville?

3. How many more hours of sunlight does Sunnyville enjoy on June 21 than
on December 21 each year?

4. Suppose that the principal of Sunnyville High School arrives at the school
each day at 6:45am. Is she ever traveling to school in the dark? Explain your
answer.

5. The principal is looking to start a Mindfulness room to help students relax

during the day. Where should she locate the room in the school building?
Explain your answer.

Use Diagram B, Diagram C, and Diagram D to answer the questions below. Diagram B
illustrates the path of the sun in the sky of New York City as well the sunrise and sunset
times for June 21 and December 21. Diagram C and Diagram D also illustrate New York
City, but are missing dates.

Match the possible dates below with the

approximate diagram. You will not use all
the answers.
6. March 21 and September 23

7. November 15 and December 21

8. June 21 and August 1

9. In Diagram D, the two arcs are almost

the same length. What does this tell you
about the amount of sunlight in New York
City on those two days? Explain your
answer.

Use Diagram E illustrating the sun path in Boca Raton, Florida to answer the questions
below.

Complete Diagram E by adding the dates and sunrise and sunset times in the proper
locations.

10a. February 14 sunrise 6:57 am

10b. February 14 sunset 6:12 pm

10c. July 4 sunrise 6:32 am

10d. July 4 sunset 8:17 pm

The total number of hours of sunlight a geographic location receives on a particular day
of the year depends on its distance from the equator. The chart below lists the sunrise
and sunset times and distance north of the equator for four North American cities on
February 2 (Groundhog Day). Use this data to answer the questions below.

11. Calculate the total hours and minutes of sunlight in each city on February 2.

12. Which city on the chart receives the least amount of sunlight on February 2?

13. How do you think the distance from the equator impacts the amount of sunlight
received in particular North American locations on February 2?

14. Which two cities have very similar amounts of sunlight on February 2? Why do you
think this is the case?

15. Each of the four cities listed in the chart are far apart from each other. For example,
Raleigh, North Carolina is approximately 1,300 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada. Why doesn’t
the eastern or western position of the cities affect the total amount of sunlight received?

17. Your client is looking to build a new school. They want to build in a location that will
allow them to minimize their heating and cooling costs. Of all of the locations we have
examined today, which location would you recommend for the new school? Explain
your answer.

Aesthetics is one way we interact with architecture beyond the simple form and
function of a building, but buildings can also make us FEEL a certain way. This is know
as “sense of place.” The table below lists several different emotions. Identify a place that
makes you feel a certain way and add it to the table. You can write in the name of the
place, or if you are working digitally they can copy/paste an image of the place into the
table.

Emotion Architectural Example Why I think it makes me

feel this way.

Happy/Energized

Sad/Depressed

Sophisticated

Anxious

Confined

Creative/Inspired
