1. What is the predominant tone of the play?

- The predominant tone of the play is optimism because the majority conversations
revolve around how Kulas and Celing attempt to stop Kulas from gambling in order
for him to see glimpses of optimism in his life

2. What are the significant traits of Celing and Kulas?

2.1. Celing: The significant traits of Ceiling is that she is a firm and practical
woman, yet she is also a risk taker wife who is compassionate and loving.

2.2. Kulas: The significant traits of Kulas is that he is a typical gambler who would
put his money on the line just to keep his cockfighting obsession continue. At the
end of the day, he is Celing's faithful and loving spouse.

3. What are the significant traits of each of the minor characters?

3.1. Sioning: The significant traits of Sioning is that she is the character who acts
as a neutral, balancing the competing perspectives of the other
characters. Before taking a stand or clarifying anything, she carefully
listens to each character's perceptions. Personally, I think she'd make
an excellent best friend.
3.2. Castor: The significant traits of Castor is that he is naughty and self-centered.
He has the guts to cheat, as well as the ruthlessness to cheat on his
friend for his own good. He's a character who almost always turns out
to be a nasty guy.
3.3. Teban: The significant traits of Teban is that he is a fascinating character. His
masters, especially Celing, can always count on him. He is the group's
most upright and innocent member.
4. What is the main conflict or tension in the story/play?
Conflict (external or internal) in a story is a struggle between opposing forces. It usually
presents the ‘problem’ that needs to be solved in the story. Characters must act to
confront those forces and there is where conflict is born. NOTE: If there is nothing to
overcome, there is no story. Thus, conflict in a story creates and drives the plot forward.

Internal Conflict: Kulas cannot control himself to beg some money from Celing to go
in the cockpit arena.
External Conflict: Kulas against his wife Celing.
5. What are the sources of humor in this play? Provide at least two.
A. Dreams- their dreams is one of the source of humor in the play because they
believe and made a decision based in their dreams.
B. Superstition in Cockpit- superstition in cockpit is one of the sources of humor
because they believe that someday they can get out of poverty just
doing gambling.

6. How does the story end? What is the surprise twist in the end?
- Kulas entered the fight and gambled, but this time he staked at his opponent's
cock. At the end, there was a surprising twist. Kulas agreed to have all of his
roosters cooked in exchange for a pledge that he would never participate in
cockfighting again.

7. What are the social and cultural traditions reflected in the play?
- The cockfighting is one of the cultural traditions depicted in the drama. As far as
I knew cockfighting, is one of the oldest preserved traditions that is still practiced
today. We find that we find the spongy cultural-historical cockfighting is the king
of Philippine gambling sports. It reflects the true essence of the Filipino as a quite
impulsive and happy-go-lucky, but he can therefore be religious, honorable and
forever be optimistic. Another custom can be seen in the roles of husband and wife
at weddings. "After all, it's your money," a wife says in appreciation of her
husband's efforts. Wives are responsible for household responsibilities such as
cooking and budgeting.
8. What superstitions about cockfighting are depicted in the play?
- In the play, many cockfighting superstitions are mentioned. One of them is
dreams, because people have made decisions based on their dreams, such as
when Kulas dreamed of being chased by a white carabao. Another amazing belief
was revealed by Castor to Kulas. "Once you prick it, the leg will be weak... No one
will see what we did, but that leg is weak now, and the cock can no longer hit with
it." The legend goes that if the cock's ligaments are pricked by a needle, the cock's
legs will become weak and it will be unable to fight back.

9. What is the role of a wife in a typical Filipino family as shown in the play? Cite evidence
from the play.

- In a conventional Filipino family, the wife's primary responsibilities include

domestic tasks, budgeting, grocery shopping, and child care. "Well, here, take this.
After all, it's your money. I'm only being careful..." (carefully budgeting the money).
This was further shown in the play when Sonia asks Celing to join her to the market
and when Celing told Kulas that his surviving fighting cocks would be made into
adobo and boiled into soup.
