2. PURPOSE
Purpose of this technical standard is to define conditions required for specification of steel strip applied in shock
absorbers and gas springs.
3. APPLICATION FIELD
The technical standard is applicable for all suspension systems/shock absorbers projects in all regions.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION
4.1. Certificates
The received batches must hold inspections certificates (chemical composition and mechanical properties
guarantee, except hardness).
To Hot Rolled Material: for thin series, types A to D until level 3 and for heavy series, types B and D until level
1 are accepted since it is not clustered (acc. to ASTM E45).
4.4. Slitting
Strip steel after slitting process must fulfill the requirements below.
4.4.1. Camber (Lateral Warping): The maximum bend allowed in 1 meter (strip steel) must be as
specified in the table below (see figure):
Dimensions in (mm)
Allowed Camber
Nominal Width (L)
Normal Tolerance Restricted Tolerance
40 L 125 2.5 1.3
125 L 500 2.0 1.0
4.4.2. Buckling and distortion of any type are not allowed for strip.
4.4.3. Failures and discontinuities due to samples of quality inspection are not allowed in strip width.
Steel strip must be identified after the slitting process. The steel strip must be identified relating the conditions
of the edges originating from the original coil as shown below:

4.6. Surface
4.6.1. Surface Protection for Coil
Oiled, must not show oxidation within 3 months from the date of dispatched to Magneti Marelli SA business
line, since supplier package is kept intact. The oil film must be easily removed by alkaline solutions, and
industrial detergents.
Surface finish for cold rolled must be matte surface finish, that is, proper for phosphate and painting, with
roughness 0.6 – 1.5 Ra (reference - cut off: 0.8 mm).
Surface finish for hot rolled must be e coils and sheets hot rolled must be supplied pickled and oiled.

Surface C, material is not indicated to be used in exposed parts. This surface can contain light or moderate
defects, but these defects cannot prohibit the use the material. The surface can be bluish and to contain dark
spots.
Surface 1, material is indicated to be used in exposed parts. This surface can contain scattered surface
defects, but these defects cannot prohibit the use the material. This surface is indicated for nobler
applications, where the overhauling must be minimum or none
Surface 2, material is not indicated to be used in exposed parts. This surface can contain light or moderate
defects, but these defects cannot prohibit the use the material. This surface is fit for less noble uses and
surface can be bluish and contain dark spots.
4.7. Weldability
The raw materials produced according to this standard must have good weldability, since the proper methods
are used.
4.8. Coating
The raw materials produced according to this standard are supposed to be painted, electroplated and
protected against corrosion, after being prepared by Cofap.
