MODULE 8-PIAGET’S STAGES OF COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

1. It’s Christmas and Uncle Bob is giving “Aguinaldo” the children. Three year-old
Karen did not want to receive the one hundred peso bill and instead preferred to receive
four 20 peso bills. Her ten year-old cousins were telling her it’s better to get the one
hundred bills, but they failed to convince her.

Why do you think did Karen prefer the 20-peso bills?

 I think Karen preferred to receive four 20 peso bills than a 1 hundred peso
bill, for the reason that number of peso bills which is 4 is greater than 1.
The child think that it is better to have many peso bills because it looks like
it has greater value compared to receiving a one hundred peso bills. She
had no idea the value of each bill that's why she focused on the quantity of
having many peso bills instead, although 100 is greater than 80. This is
where the childs develops conservation during preoperational stage that
ages 2-7 years old.

2. Siblings, Tria, 10; Enzo, 8; and Riel, 4 were sorting out their stuffed animals.
They had 7 bears, 3, 2 cows and 1 dolphin. Mommy, a psychology teacher, enters and
says’ “Good thing you’re sorting those. Do you have more, stuffed animals or more
bears?” Tria and Enzo say, “Stuffed animals.” Riel says, “Bears” Why do you think Riel
answered “Bears?”
What does this say about how she thought to answer the question?

 Reil answered bears because she observed there are many bears they sorted out
than any other kind of stuffed animals. Even though bear is also a stuffed animal
but because of what she saw, she thought that there are more bears. This is the
tendency of the child to only see her point of view and assumed that everyone also
has the same point of view with her.

3. While eating on her high chair, seven-month old Liza accidentally dropped her
spoon on the floor. She saw mommy pick it up. Liza again drops her new spoon, and
she does this several times more on purpose. Mommy didn’t like it at all but Liza
appeared to enjoy dropping the spoons the whole time.
Why do you think baby Liza appeared to enjoy dropping the spoons?
 I think Liza appeared to enjoy dropping the spoons because she thinks that
it is alright to do it since her mother didn't scold her. Her curiousity of the
spoon and her senses was fulfilled whenever her mother repeatedly picks it
up. This stage is where coordination of senses occurs with motor
responses. The child is curious about the world and begins to interact with
the environment.
