INTRODUCTION
AND
BACKGROUND

Pedophilia or pedophilic disorder is a

psychiatric or a psychological disorder
affecting people of older age groups,
adults or even, older adolescent males
and, to a lesser extent, females; where
they experience chief or exclusive
sexual attraction towards younger
individuals and children, mostly those
of the prepubescent stage and age,
goes beyond the time of puberty,
which is generally 10 to 11 for girls and 11
to 12 for boys, up until the age of 13.
Although many of us are unaware of
such proceedings, it happens daily
right in front of our eyes; whether it
maybe the 6 year-old first grader who
is molested by the janitor in the back
room of a school, or the 300 priests in
Pennsylvania who inappropriate
touched or even sexually assaulted
young children over a 50-year period.

An Oscar-winning movie named

“Spotlight” that was released in 2015
discovers the story of how Robinson
and his reporting team from the
Boston Globe exposed the Catholic
Church for covering up sexual abuse,
mainly done by their priests. They
published a book titled “Betrayal: The
Crisis in the Catholic Church” in 2002
and won a Pulitzer prize in 2003 for
their achievements and public service.

Other books and movies such as
‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’,
explore the effects of Pedophilia on
a personal level, from the
perspective of the victim and how
does it affect their mental state into
the future.
These 2 books and their consequent
movies aim to provide insight and
raise awareness on the issue
surrounding pedophilia. As of 2020,
there are more than 42 000 000
victims and survivors of sexual
abuse and assault in the US alone,
70% of which happened to children
who were 17 or younger.
As it intertwines with other social
and cultural injustices, the fact
remains that we need to be deeply
perturbed and concerned about
this issue.
PEDOPHILIA
Even more so now than ever before,
with the rise of an interconnected
smaller and virtual world, catfishing
cases have been on the rise, where
older men and women set up
profiles, communicate, groom and
convince adolescents to meet up,
luring them into sketchy and
isolated locations. This has a huge
impact on the child as grooming
and traumatic incidents such as
these can severely affect the
mental health and development of
the young’uns.
However, this does not mean that
a child is safe around non-
strangers either. Approximately
90% of victims know the
pedophile in one way or another.
It may be just an acquaintance, as
in a teacher or janitor, or it may
be someone of closer relationship,
such as an uncle, aunt or even a
family friend.

In some (broken) households, the probability that it is one of the parents,

may also be possible.

The fact that Pedophilia itself is a mental disorder that needs to be

treated, where the sufferer suffers from sexual attraction towards a child
suggests that the occurrence of these thoughts may not be the fault of
the person themselves, but the smallest action of even touching a kid
inappropriately converts a pedophile to a criminal and offender as in
doing so, he/she has made the decision to act on their desires and
impulses, which in turn shows how they have abandoned the basis of
their religious beliefs to go after such despicable ventures.

accomplishments. It teaches us the basic idea of happiness
which is that happiness does not arise from material objects,

between worldview and how is it we behave and act towards
other people. Worldview is the way we view this world,
including everything in it, from our perspective. It
incorporates how we think the world works, how we view and
contemplate something, how we fit into this massive world
and also how we find solutions and solve problems, by using
our own perspective and intuition."

THEORETICAL

The concept of sexual exploitation of
children and abuse of minors is not
new. It has been present since the
days of the Greeks and Romans,
where this act was in fact endorsed.
They often used children for sexual
pleasure and gratification, and in
Greece, it was common to find
adolescent boys forced into
relationships of sexual nature with
older and mature men. This however,
is an incidence that occurred more
than 2000 years ago. Mankind has
come a long way since then; not only
in terms of science and philosophy,
but also morally and spiritually. We
are now better at the judgment of
right and wrong than we ever were
before, and that is mainly due to the
emergence of the idea of worldview.
Although the existence of these
perverted thoughts are justified
due to the presence of this
disorder, the act and behavior,
however, is not; as one’s actions are
still under one’s own control. Most
pedophiles that have been so far
reported are males, and their
attraction may be towards
prepubescent boys, girls or even
both. However, the prevalence of
opposite sex attraction compared
to same sex attraction is twofold,
and in majority of the cases, the
perpetrator is known or is familiar
to the child, e.g. a family member,
person with authority (priests,
teachers, coaches, etc.), a
stepparent, etc. It has been further

problem surrounding pedophilia is
that more than 90% of the time, the
offender is one that the child knows
and trusts. Another significant issue is
the fact that for males and females
with developmental disabilities, the
majority of them (90%) have been
abused at some point in their lives,
with 49% of them experiencing more
than 10 abusive incidents in their lives.

Not understanding the fact that
they have been abused
Fear towards the offender
Opposing feelings about the
offender

As a parent, teacher, or any other

important figure in a child’s life, one
must develop a proper relationship
based on trust and understanding
between themselves and the child,
so that if a situation arises where
injustice has been served, the child
may communicate it to adults whom
he/she trusts. Not only does this help
us report the offender, but may also
help the mental state of the child as

On the other hand, we must also
recognize the fact that not all
pedophiles abuse children. Some
may be suffering through this
disorder and may still not have ever

sexual abuse or exploitation. We
should be more open to the fact
that what they need is help, and not
isolation. Help may be in the form of
psychotherapy or drug treatment.
Long-term individual or group
therapy is the forefront for
pedophilic disorders, as it is usually
part of a ‘multi-treatment’ involving
the training of social skills,
treatment of co-morbid mental and
also physical disorders and drug
treatment such as anti-androgens.
Research has shown that
pedophiles who are committed to
their treatment and whose
advances are regularly monitored
may refrain from pedophilic activity

reintroduced and reintegrated
into society. With regards to drug
treatment of anti-androgens, IM
medroxyprogesterone acetate is
the selected treatment of choice
in the US, however, its effects on
