1. MOHAMED ABDEL WAHAB

2. An accomplished Egyptian singer and oud player, Mohamed Abdel Wahab is known for
his innovations and exquisite musical compositions. Born in Caro in 1907, he not only
played, sang, and composed; he also acted in a few Egyptian movies. A pioneer, he
incorporated Western rhythms into Arab music and continued to perform and compose
towards the end of his life when he was in his 80s.

3. Abdel Wahab was criticized for his introduction of Western beats and rhythms, but his
style of blending Eastern and Western styles of music has contributed to a richer
repertoire in Arab music. He shied away from no style, and with a keen ear was able to
blend established and emerging music trends into Arab music. In 1941he merged the
waltz into the song Al Gondol and incorporated rock and roll rhythms into Ya Albi Ya
Khali for the singer Abdel Halim Hafez. Abdel Wahab easily merged mambo, rumba,
tango, and samba rhythms with traditional Arab styles like the baladi and maqsoum. He
also incorporated Western instruments into his orchestras like the accordion, guitar,
bass, organ and synthesizer. Beginning his professional singing career at the age of 13,
Mohamed Abdel Wahab composed thousands of songs and sang hundreds himself. He
even composed the national anthem of the Kingdom of Libya, “Ya Beladi” (Oh My
Country).

4. He worked as an actor from the silent-era of Egyptian movies, but left in the 1950s to
focus on his singing career. He wrote ten songs for the Queen of Egyptian music, Umm
Kulthum; and he introduced singers like Leila Mourad in his films. He died in his eighties
from a heart attack, and his belongings are featured in Cairo in the Music Institute. A
statue now stands in the Bab El-Sheriya Square in honor of him.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

The Kingdom of Libya, for which Mohamed Abdel Wahab composed the national anthem,
lasted less than twenty years, from 1951 to 1969. Libya was occupied by the Italians from
1934 to 1943. During the war, the Allied forces defeated Italian and German forces in Libya,
and Great Britain and France stepped into Libya as occupiers. It wasn't until 1951 that Libya
gained her independence through the United Nations and a monarchy was set up with Idris
as-Senussi, the Libyan representative to the UN, as the king. He was deposed in a coup
d'état in September of 1969 by Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi, and the Libyan Arab Republic
was established.
