MOST of these papers came from a series of seminars on African history at Bost
Vol. III relates to Eastern and Northeastern Africa and the bases of these studies are lin-
guistics, archaeology, anthropology, and archival and literary evidence. They extend in
period of time from prehistory to the nineteenth century. Vol. IV deals with West Africa
and has a rather more recent focus, with some studies covering the twentieth century. The
studies in this volume are oriented toward politics, trade, Islam, Christianity, and traditional
and tribal religions.

THIS facsimile reprint of Equiano's book contains a new introduction by Paul Edwards
which gives an account of his life, discusses the question as to whether Equiano was the sole
author and analyses his description of Ibo life and society in the light of comments by
G. I. Jones, Chinua Achebe and others. Pp. lxxiii to lxxxi of the first volume consist of notes
on various points in the text, and the List of Subscribers to the 1789 edition and appendices
to later editions are reproduced.

A MAINLY politically oriented study of Africa's economic, social, and political progress to
date, and future prospects, by the Director of the Africa Institute in Moscow. Solodovnikov
says (p. I40) that he is optimistic about the future of' non-capitalist development 'in Africa,
but must emphasize that ' the creation of the material and technical basis of socialism and
the formation of new social relations is a complicated and prolonged process '.
