Synopsis

Aim

To provide a detailed analytical report that compares the projected impacts due to the
Phase 2 segment of the Chennai Metro Rail project on the demarcated section of the Arcot
road and areas around it at a micro level with the already existing development pattern.

Objective

● Is to identify and study transit hubs that have had a massive impact on the urban
fabric.
● Is to project and analyse the existing users and their needs/expectations.
● Is to analyse the subsequent possible development impacts on the areas at the
onset of the Metro project.
● Is to map the probable commercial growth in comparison with the existing activities.
● Is to study the changes in the residential-commercial ratio of the areas under the
influence.

Research Statement

The roads of the city of Chennai are already on the verge of hitting the saturation point
leading to severe traffic congestion and thereby subjecting the city to all the issues that
ensue. One of the major reasons for this is the alarming rate at which private vehicle
numbers increase. This leads to the need for a strong and competent public transportation
system to support the demand.

The inception of new urban transport infrastructure to meet trip demand is very vital for
development at a city level. An efficient transport system will considerably affect the
working of a city for the better.

The intent of this dissertation is to address the question,

How does a transportation hub impact the surrounding urban fabric and its population?

Methodology

The first step towards the study would be to identify similar transit zones and the
developments influenced by the project for analysis and identification of the possible
outcomes. On-site physical study will be undertaken to understand the present scenario of
the study area. Land use pattern, residential to commercial ratio, figure and ground
mapping, ownership mapping will be produced to support the study.

Questionnaire for the survey will be composed and distributed to the shop owners,
workers and residents of the area to draw inferences from a user-group point of view on
the Metro project and its impact.

The data from the study and survey will be deduced for analysis and map a logical
prediction of the impacts of the Metro project on the area and its people.
