TIMELINE
OF TRANSPORTATION

Transport, or transportation, is moving people or things from

one place to another place. Transport can be divided into
infrastructure, vehicles and operations.

Ancient Wheel
• The earliest wheels were used as
potter's wheels. They were invented in
Mesopotamia about 5,500 years ago.
• The wheelbarrow—a simple cart with
a single wheel—was invented by the
ancient Greeks. Wheels are mainly
4th used for transportation.

Boat 3000 BC
Boats were used between 4000 and 3000
BC in Sumer, ancient Egypt and in the
Indian Ocean. The oldest boat ever found
is called the Pesse canoe, which was
about nine feet long and built about
10,000 years ago. It's a dugout canoe,
which means it was made from a tree.

Hot-air Ballon
The hot-air balloon is the first successful
human-carrying flight technology. The first
untethered manned hot-air balloon flight was
performed by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier
and François Laurent d'Arlandes on November
21, 1783, in Paris, France, in a balloon created
by the Montgolfier brothers. And later on it
become a reliable form of transportation.

Steam-powered Railway
When Englishman Richard Trevithick launched
the first practical steam locomotive in 1804, it
averaged less than 10 mph. Today, several
high-speed rail lines are regularly travelling 30
times as fast.
Bicycle
The first verifiable claim for a practically
used bicycle belongs to German Baron
Karl von Drais, a civil servant to the Grand
Duke of Baden in Germany. The bicycle
introduced thousands to individual and
independent transportation, and provided
greater flexibility in leisure.

1817
'True' Motorcycle
August 30, 1885: Daimler Gives
World First 'True' Motorcycle. The
German auto pioneer adds an
internal combustion engine to a
bicycle frame to make the first

1885
gasoline-driven hog.

Airplane
On December 17, 1903, Wilbur
and Orville Wright made four
brief flights at Kitty Hawk with
their first powered aircraft. The
Wright brothers had invented
the first successful airplane.

1903

Jeepney
They began making the vehicles in
1953. They also contributed to the
framing of the jeepney as a Philippine
cultural icon. Jeepneys are the

1953
Philippines' most popular form of
public transportation, and they are a
pure anachronism.

The importance of transportation is that it enables trade,

commerce, and communication that establish
civilization. It is good planning that manages traffic
flows and enables the undisturbed and steady movement
from one place to another.
