COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course focuses on learning to become familiar with the layout and contents of API 570. It forms a vital
preliminary stage that will ultimately help the students understand not only the content of API 570 but also its
cross-references to the other relevant API and ASME codes.

The main emphasis of this programme is on promoting safety and maintaining optimal performance through
the use of inspectors specialized in process piping systems. It provides the oil, gas and petrochemical industry
with the assurance that piping inspectors trained and certified under this internationally recognized
programme have the required knowledge and experience for the job in the field. Course participants aspiring
to be certified by American Petroleum Institute will undergo a rigorous programme to get them well versed
with the various code books and standards, including API Standards that cover inspection, repair, alteration
and rerating of in-service piping systems.

API 570 is divided into nine sections (sections 1 to 9), four appendices (appendices A to D), three figures and
four tables. Even when taken together, these are not sufficient to specify fully a methodology for the
inspection, repair and rerating of pipework systems. To accomplish this, other information and guidance has
to be drawn from the other codes included in your API document package

COURSE PURPOSE

Generally, this course is essential in piping inspector. The main aim of this course is to provide the students to
obtain the technical standards covered include the full API ‘body of knowledge’ for the examination as follows:
1. API 570 Piping Inspection Code; Inspection, Repair, Alteration, and Rerating of In-Service Piping
System
2. API RP 571 Damage mechanisms affecting fixed equipment in the refining industry
3. API RP 574 Inspection practices for piping system components
4. API RP 577 Welding inspection and metallurgy
5. API RP 578 Material verification program for new and existing alloy piping systems
6. ASME V Non-destructive examination
7. ASME IX Welding and Brazing Qualification, Welding Only
8. ASME B16.5 Pipe flanges and flanged fittings; and
9. ASME B 31.3 Process piping.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

The outcomes of this course can be seen in the following table:

No Course Materials Learning Outcomes

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to have knowledge and
1 API RP 577 expertise in the area of Welding Inspection and Metallurgy based on the information
contained in API RP 577

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand requirements
and methods for nondestructive examination which are referenced and required by other
2 ASME V code Sections.
It also includes manufacturer's examination responsibilities, duties of authorized inspectors
and requirements for qualification of personnel, inspection and examination.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand rules relating
3 ASME IX to the qualification of welding and brazing procedures as required by other Code Sections
for component manufacture.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to improve safety, reliability,
and minimize liability of fixed equipment by learning common damage mechanisms in the
refining and petrochemical industry as covered in API 571. The roles of the engineer and
4 API RP 571
inspector in identifying affected materials and equipment, critical factors, appearance of
damage, prevention and mitigation, inspection and monitoring will be covered to introduce
the concepts of service-induced deterioration and failure modes.
By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand the material
and quality assurance system to verify that the nominal composition of alloy components
5 API RP 578 within the pressure envelope of a piping system is consistent with the selected or specified
construction materials to minimize the potential for catastrophic release of toxic or
hazardous liquids or vapors.

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to understand how piping
systems function and what the Code requirements are for various types of installations.
6 ASME B 31.3 The students are also hoped to understand the limitations on the selection and application
of materials and components; requirements for the fabrication, assembly, and erection of
piping; and requirements for examination, inspection, and testing of piping

7 ASME B16.5 By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able to

By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able understand the purpose,
scope, and responsibilities defined in API 570. It also covers the inspection types &
8 API 570
intervals, inspection data evaluation, calculate MAWP of piping system, repairs, alterations
& rerating as well as underground piping.

9 API RP 574 By the end of learning this topic, the students should be able
