5 BASIC DESIGN

5.1.2 (Addition) Unless otherwise specified, the Pump Supplier shall have unit responsibility.
This Pump Supplier will assure that all sub Suppliers comply with the requirements of this
standard and all referenced standards.

5.1.3 (Addition) Unless otherwise specified, the equipment will be installed outdoors in a desert
area with relative humidity of 0 to 100%. The data sheet and/or requisition documents will specify
the site conditions in more detail.

5.1.6 (Modification) Pumps with constant-speed drivers shall be capable of developing at least
a 3 m (10 ft) or 5 percent head increase (whichever is greater) at rated conditions, when a new
impeller(s) (larger diameter) and/or new diffuser(s) is installed. This criteria may not be met by
special overbores of cases or diffusers. Impeller diameters less than published minimum
diameters, are not acceptable.

5.1.8.1 (Addition) Note: For variable speed applications the Pump Supplier is responsible for
checking MAWP and shaft horsepower ratings at maximum continuous speed.

5.1.9 (Addition) The Pump Supplier is responsible for checking in all instances, that the seal
arrangement, axial thrust load and bearing life is in compliance with this standard. Pumps
designed with mechanical seals shall combine the use of throat bushing, wear rings, impeller
balance holes and seal flush arrangements to insure that the seal chamber pressure meets the
requirements of API-682 paragraph 6.1.2.14 (margin of not less than 30% between seal chamber
pressure and maximum fluid vapor pressure, or 2.22 ºC (36º F) product temperature margin
based on the maximum process fluid temperature). This will prevent vaporization of the product
at the sealing interface.

5.1.10 (Addition) A witnessed NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head) vacuum tank suppression test
is required if the NPSH (A) minus the NPSH (R) is 1 meter (3 feet) or less. Inducers shall not be
used without Purchaser’s approval.

5.1.11 (Addition) All horizontal pumps (except Type OH6), and vertically suspended pumps with
single suction first stage impellers, shall have a suction specific speed (S) less than or equal to
11,000 (U.S. units).

5.1.12 (Addition) Viscous performance must be checked whenever product viscosity exceeds 2
cP.

5.1.13 (Addition) Pumps that have stable head/capacity curve (continuous head rise to shutoff)
are required for all applications. When parallel operation is specified, pumps shall have equal
head rise (curves shall match within 3%) at all heads from shutoff to 120 percent of rated
capacity. The minimum head rise for all pumps is 10%.

5.1.19 (Decision) The need for cooling is to maintain lube oil temperatures in an acceptable
temperature range of 71.1°C to 82.2°C (160°F to 180°F) for ISO VG46, to 87.8°C (190°F) for ISO
VG68 and to 93.3°C (200°F) for ISO VG100 . Bearing housing cooling by axial shaft mounted fan
with shroud is preferred and should be utilized when pumping temperature exceeds 121.1° C
(250°F). Water cooling of bearing housing shall be provided when pumping temperatures
exceeds 260°C (500°F) or when fan cooling is not sufficient to maintain proper oil temperature.
Mechanical seal coolers shall be provided when required to meet vapor pressure and sealing
pressure margin.

5.1.30 (Addition) The Supplier shall advise any equipment protection required for the jobsite
location (i.e., winterization for low ambient temperatures).

5.1.31 a (Clarification) Unless otherwise specified the details of threading shall to conform to
ANSI/ASME B1.1.

5.2 Pump types

(Addition) The following pump configurations are not acceptable:

Close coupled
Rigidly Coupled Vertical Inline
Horizontal foot-mounted overhung
Two-stage overhung
Double suction overhung
Ring-section casing (multistage)
Built-in Mechanical Seal

(Addition) Vertical can pumps shall be limited to services where NPSH available or head-
capacity limitations make a horizontal pump impractical. Pumps of the horizontal shaft
configuration are preferred.

5.3 Pressure Casings

5.3.2 (Decision) Unless otherwise specified the maximum discharge pressure shall be increased
by the additional pressure developed by the maximum specified relative density and the
installation of the maximum diameter impeller or the maximum number of stages that the pump
can accommodate.

5.3.4 (Addition) The Supplier shall state the source for the material properties, and this source
shall be an organization recognized in material selection.

The materials selected shall either meet the required ASTM material specified in table H-2 or be
equivalent materials to the ASTM grades.

5.3.5 (Addition) The pump seal chamber and seal flush piping and accessories shall be rated for
the pump casing MAWP at pump maximum operating temperature. Where this criteria can not be
met and with purchaser's approval the seal chamber and seal flush piping and accessories shall
be at least equal to 42.4 barg (615 psig) at the maximum pumping temperature of the pump.

(Addition) Pressure rating shall be in accordance with ASME B16.1 or ASME B16.5 as applicable.

5.3.6 (Decision) The maximum allowable working pressure shall apply to all parts referred to in
the definition of pressure casing (refer to 3.42). This includes regions of pumps that are subject
only to suction pressure, such as:

a) The suction can for double casing vertically suspended pumps,

b) The suction flange of multistage between bearing pumps,

5.3.9 d (Addition) Boiler feedwater pumps at a rated discharge pressure above 99.97 barg (1450
psig).

5.3.10 (Addition) The Supplier shall use solid metal, metal-clad or combined and compression
restricted, spiral-wound metal or non-asbestos-filled gaskets conforming to ASME B16.20 for
design temperatures over 177C (350F). O-rings shall not be used under these conditions.

5.4.3.5 (Addition) Connections welded to the case shall not limit the MAWP of the case. These
welds are pressure boundary welds, not piping welds.

Note: This happens when Austenitic stainless steel piping is used on C-6 pump cases, using the
same flange rating. Connections using a different material grade are acceptable only if the
connection flanged rating is increased to a higher pressure rating, for example using a 600#
flanged drain connection on a 300# R.F. C-6 pump.

5.4.3.7 (Substitution) Unused pressure casing connections are not acceptable except on the seal
gland.

5.4.3.8 (Addition) Connections accordance with ASME B16.1 or ASME B16.5 as applicable.

case as completely as possible. The Supplier shall indicate on the outline drawing the liquid,
which will not self drain.

5.5 External Nozzle Forces and Moments

5.5.5 (Substitution) Annex F will be used by the piping designer to determine allowable piping
