1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. Scope of Specification

1. This specification prescribes the general requirements for an enclosed diesel engine
driven power generator set. This specification forms a part of all inquiries and
purchase orders for this equipment.

2. This specification supplements the datasheets, on which the operating conditions and
special requirements are listed in detail for each engine generator set.

3. Conflicts between this specification and other documents should be brought to the
attention of the Buyer for clarification.

4. Compliance with the provisions of this specification does not relieve Supplier of the
responsibility of furnishing properly designed equipment, mechanically and
electrically suited to meet operating conditions.

5. The engine generator set shall be the product of a Manufacturer regularly engaged in
the supply of diesel engine generator sets. The product shall have been in regular
production by this Manufacturer for at least 2 years.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.1 General

The rated output for the generator is shown on the attached individual datasheets.

2.2 Design Summary

A. The engine supplier shall be responsible for coordination and guarantee of the overall
performance of the generator, driver, and auxiliaries.

B. Equipment shall be furnished completely fabricated, assembled at the factory, tested and
dismantled only to the extent required for inspection and shipping. Buyer will supply
labor and construction equipment at the site for installation.

C. The engine-generator set shall be mounted on a continuous structural steel subbase


sufficiently rigid to properly support all components and sustain accurate alignment.
Vibration isolators of the type and quantity recommended by Manufacturer shall be
supplied by the supplier. Mounting holes for the isolators shall be located in the subbase
to ensure equal distribution of weight.

D. Each unit shall be designed to reach operating speed and full load capability within 10
seconds after receiving a start signal.

E. Each unit shall be designed for continuous standby duty and be suitable for installation in
a nonhazardous area.

F. Each unit shall be capable of withstanding an overspeed to 125 percent of rated speed.
Overspeed trip shall be set at 110 percent speed.

G. Each unit shall be capable of developing rated power at the maximum ambient design
temperature.

H. Each unit shall be capable of withstanding a 10 percent overload for 1 hour minimum.

I. Engine Supplier shall certify that a mathematical torsional analysis has been made of a
like combination of engine and generator to ensure that torsional stresses in the system
throughout the full speed range do not exceed acceptable limits.

J. A silencer recommended by the engine manufacturer of the high degree residential type
shall be supplied and mounted on the roof of the weatherproof enclosure. A stainless
steel flexible connector (45.7 centimeters [18 inches] minimum) shall be provided
between engine and silencer. A vertical exhaust pipe with a rain cap shall be provided to
direct exhaust away from air intake louvers.

2.3 Design Requirements

A. Generator

1. The generator shall be in accordance with NEMA MG-1.

2. The generator shall be a single bearing revolving field type with rotating brushless
exciter and solid-state voltage regulator. It shall be directly connected to the
flywheel housing and driven by means of a multiple disc coupling from the flywheel.

3. Static voltage regulator shall maintain voltage within 2 percent from no load to full
load and full load to no load. The transient voltage dip shall not be greater than
20 percent of rated voltage when full load at rated power factor is applied to the
generator.

4. Space heaters shall be supplied and leads brought out to a separate conduit box.
Space heater power shall be 120 / 1 / 60 and wiring shall comply with requirements
of NEC.

5. The generator shall be rated in accordance with the Electric Generator Datasheet
included with the inquiry or purchase order.

6. Insulation shall be Class B or better. Temperature rise shall not exceed 80 degrees C
over 40 degrees C ambient measured by resistance.

7. The generator shall have a TIF (Telephone Influence Factor) no greater than 50.

8. The generator shall be provided with RIS (Radio Interference Suppression).

9. The generator shall be capable of sustaining a 300 percent short circuit for 10
seconds.

B. Engine

1. The engine shall be a 2 or 4 cycle, water cooled diesel designed to operate


satisfactorily on Number 2 diesel fuel and shall be capable of starting at minimum
ambient temperature specified. The engine may be turbo charged with Buyer's
approval.

2. The rated net power of the engine at rated speed, with all driven accessories, shall be
at least that required to power the generator at 110 percent load.

3. The engine shall have replaceable cylinder liners and replaceable valve seat inserts.

4. The engine shall be equipped with a full pressure lubrication system supplying oil to
all surfaces requiring pressure lubrication. Circulation shall be by means of positive
displacement engine driven pump equipped with nonadjustable pressure regulator.
The lubrication system shall include a replaceable, dual element type, full flow oil
filter and automatic lube oil temperature control.

5. Engine speed for this service shall not exceed 1800 rpm.

6. Engine speeds shall be controlled by an electronic governor having a speed drop not
to exceed 1 percent, no load to full load.

7. The engine shall be cooled by a unit mounted radiator. Cooling system shall have
thermostatically controlled jacket water and lube oil heaters, 120 / 1 / 60 power, and
shall be wired to a common junction box. Wiring shall comply with the NEC and
any local codes.

8. Engine protective devices shall be provided and include shutdowns in case of low oil
pressure, high water temperature, overcrank, or overspeed.

C. Starting Battery

1. The engine supplier shall provide heavy-duty starting batteries of the lead-acid type,
24 volt, no less than 225 ampere hour capacity and complete with battery cables,
box, and thermostatically controlled battery heater (120 / 1 / 60 power).

2. The engine supplier shall provide 2-rate battery charger suitable for operation with
120 volt, 60 hertz, 1 phase power.

3. The engine shall be provided with an alternator for recharging the batteries during
operation.

D. Fuel System

1. A day tank with a minimum 6 hour operating capacity shall be supplied. An engine-
driven fuel pump shall draw from this tank for operation. The day tank shall be
vented and shall be provided with return overflow to the main storage tank, a float
type sight gage glass, float switch for day tank pump control, and low level alarm
switch. Supplier shall provide a self priming high lift electric motor driven pump
with 120 / 1 / 60 power to draw fuel from storage tank (by others) to day tank.

2. A hand-operated fuel pump shall be provided with connections to discharge into the
day tank.

3. The day fuel tank shall be mounted in the base of the generator set with all
connections between engine and day tank factory piped.

4. Fuel oil filters shall be provided by Supplier and shall be dual, full flow replaceable
cartridge type.

5. Flexible fuel lines shall be provided.

E. Weather Protective Enclosure

1. A weather protective sheet metal enclosure for the complete unit shall be provided.
The enclosure shall have motorized air intake louvers and gravity radiator air exhaust
louver.

2. Louver operators shall be powered from the cranking battery and wired to the control
panel to operate whenever the engine runs.

3. The enclosure shall have sufficient strength to support the exhaust silencer on the
roof. Walls shall be 14 gage minimum, and the roof shall be 12 gage minimum.

4. Provide doors on both sides and rear of enclosure. Doors shall have full length
hinges and lockable latches. Doors shall be sized to permit viewing of all meters and
gages on the control panel and to allow access to all maintenance points on the
engine.

5. Oil and coolant drain lines shall be provided with lockable valves and caps. Lines
shall extend beyond the enclosure. Lockable coolant fill door in roof of enclosure
shall be provided if clearance from radiator cap to roof is less than 30 centimeters
(12 inches).

6. Two inch fiberglass insulation held in place with expanded or perforated metal shall
be provided on walls and ceiling of enclosure.

7. Thermostatically controlled air circulating heater to maintain temperature within


enclosure above 1.7°C (35°F) shall be provided. Power shall be 120 volt, 1 phase,
60 Hz.

8. Components shall be mounted and wired to a common junction box in accordance


with NEC. The fuel tank base shall be designed to allow all conduits to enter from
the bottom of the enclosure.

F. Instrumentation and Controls

1. Local Control Panel

A local control panel shall be provided and shall be vibration isolated from the
engine. It shall conform with all applicable NEC requirements and shall include the
following engine gages:

2. Safety Shutdown Functions and Indicators

The following conditions shall cause the engine to stop and the individual alarm light
to activate:

 Low lube oil pressure


 High jacket water temperature
 Engine overspeed
 Overcrank (failure to start within 60 seconds)

3. Control Panel, Generator

The following items shall be included:

 AC Voltmeter and phase selector switch

 AC Ammeter and phase selector switch

 Dial type frequency meter

 Line circuit breaker with ampere rating as shown on Engine Generator

2.4 Inspection And Testing

A. All equipment covered by this specification shall be subject to inspection and witnessed
testing by a representative of the Buyer.

B. The Buyer’s inspector shall be granted access to parts of Supplier’s plants or


subsupplier’s plants engaged in the manufacture or testing of equipment in any
subsequent order.

C. Each generator set shall be given a full operational test. Proper operation of alarm and
shutdown functions shall be verified by simulating these conditions.

D. Each generator set shall be given a 4 hour full load test to verify performance. During
this test, 110 percent load shall be applied for 1 hour.

E. Supplier shall advise the Buyer, in writing, at least two weeks in advance of any shop
testing planned. Such notice shall describe the exact nature of the tests to be performed.

2.5 Identification And Tagging

A. Nameplates

1. A corrosion resistant metal nameplate shall be permanently attached to the rotating


equipment (not the baseplate) and contain the following information using specified
units:

a. Equipment item number


b. Supplier’s name
c. Equipment serial number
d. Purchase order number
e. Rated capacity
f. Size and type
B. Tagging

1. Each item shall be identified with its PO number and item number. Tags shall be
corrosion resistant metal (not aluminum) and impression stamped with the following:

a. Purchase order number


b. Equipment item number
2. Tags shall be attached to each component with stainless steel wire. This tagging is in
addition to the equipment nameplate. Equipment shipped in fully enclosed containers
shall also include the above information marked on the outside of the container.

3. Miscellaneous parts shall be tagged or marked with the equipment item number for
which they are intended.

4. Equipment containing insulating oils, antifreeze solutions, or other fluids shall be


prominently tagged at openings to indicate the nature of the contents, and shipping
and storage precautions

2.6 Painting And Preparation For Shipment

A. General

1. Preparation for shipment shall be in accordance with Supplier’s standards and as


noted herein. Supplier shall be solely responsible for the adequacy of the preparation
for shipment provisions with respect to materials and application.

2. Adequate protection shall be provided against mechanical damage and atmospheric


corrosion in transit and for a 6 month period of outdoor storage at job site prior to
installation.

3. Bracing, supports, and rigging connections shall be provided to prevent damage


during transit, lifting, or unloading.

B. Painting

1. Stainless steel surfaces, glass, internal surfaces, and finished surfaces shall not be
painted.

2. External surfaces of equipment and piping, except as noted in above paragraph, shall
be painted prior to being shipped from the supplier’s shop. Supplier’s standard
cleaning and painting procedures for ambient conditions shall be submitted for Buyer
review.

3. Painting shall be in accordance with specification MQ-SP-M-4039.

C. Preservation

1. Exposed finished and machined surfaces, including bolting and flange faces, shall be
given a heavy coating of rust inhibiting compound. Internal metal surfaces shall be
sprayed or coated with a suitable rust preventative.

2. Bearing assemblies, and exposed ends of shafts shall be fully protected from rusting
and entry of moisture and dirt.

3. All threaded openings shall be plugged with long shank pipe plugs. Plug material
shall be equivalent to the material being plugged, except that carbon steel plugs shall
be used with openings in cast iron.

4. Open ends of tube and pipe shall be capped for protection with metal or plastic
covers designed for that purpose. Use of tape for covers is unacceptable.

D. Packing

1. Equipment shall be packed, securely anchored (skid mounted when required), and
weather-protected for the shipment method called for in the purchase order. Separate,
loose, or spare parts shall be boxed and each part individually protected as required.
Each individual container shall be marked both inside and outside with the
equipment number and service for which the parts are intended.

2. Each container shall also include a complete bill of material indentifying each part.
In some instances, such as instruments, specific tagging shall be required.

3. One complete set of Installation, Operation, and Maintenance Instructions shall be


packed and shipped with the equipment. This set of instructions is in addition to the
number of sets which are to be sent directly to the Buyer.
