1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. Scope of Specification
This specification describes the requirements for modular, central station HVAC air
handling units for indoor or outdoor installation, complete with all accessory items as
required and described herein.
B. System Description
Central station air handling units shall be factory fabricated and assembled, and
consist of fans, motor and drive assembly, coils, dampers, plenums, filters,
condensate drain pans, mixing boxes, control devices, and accessories as defined in
this specification, data sheets and drawings. Central station air handling units shall
meet the commissioning requirements of MQ-SP-H-4701 and this specification.
C. Equipment Noise level Limits
The equipment noise shall meet the criteria set forth in MQ-SP-M-4032 and MQ-SP-
H-4700.

1.2 Definitions

3.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE

The following quality assurance items are in addition to the general quality assurance requirements of
specification MQ-SP-H-4701 and the contract documents.

3.1 Manufacturer's Qualifications

A. Central station air handling units shall be the standard product of an equipment
manufacturer regularly engaged in the production of such units and who issues
complete catalog information on such products.
B. Manufacturer shall have a permanent local representative or designated authorized
service representative in Saudi Arabia.

3.2 Certifications

A. Ratings of units shall be provided based on tests performed in accordance with ARI
410 and 430.
B. Air handling unit fan section SPL ratings shall comply with AMCA 301.

3.3 Testing

A. Fans shall be factory tested for flow rate, pressure, power, air density, rotation speed
and efficiency in accordance with AMCA 210.
B. Units shall be tested in accordance with AMCA 300 and shall bear AMCA certified
sound ratings seal.

3.4 Design

A. Central station air handling units and components shall be designed, fabricated, and
installed in compliance with NFPA 90A.
B. Air handling unit for outdoor installation shall be completely weatherproofed and
designed, including but not limited to casing coating if required, for use under job-
site outdoors environments. The fan motor, the electrical accessories, and bearings
shall be rated at 50° C or higher ambient temperature as required in MQ-SP-C-2000.
C. Electrical components, devices, and accessories shall be listed and labeled as defined
in NFPA 70, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and
marked for intended use.

4.0 SUBMITTALS

The Contractor providing the equipment, prior to procurement, shall submit for approval the following
product’s information in accordance with submittals’ requirements prescribed in the Contract/Purchase
order (PO) general conditions. Submittal information shall be in SI units.
Attachment 1 of this specification contains an equipment schedule. The information listed in that
schedule shall be provided as minimum for review before preliminary acceptance of the equipment.

4.1 Product Data

For each type of central station air handling unit furnished, submit the following as a
minimum:
A. Manufacturer/Representative names/contact information, equipment model/serial
numbers, shipping/operating weights and date/location of manufacturing. Same data
shall be provided for other major components such as compressors, fans and motors
if manufactured by others, i.e. original equipment manufacturer (OEM) data.
B. Electrical schematic diagrams shall be provided showing all manufacturer and
customer control devices and interlocking.
C. Certified fan-performance curves with system operating conditions indicated.
D. Certified unit-sound power ratings.
E. Certified coil-performance ratings with system operating conditions indicated.
F. Motor ratings, electrical characteristics, and motor and fan accessories.
G. Motor data sheets in accordance with MQ-SP-E-6022 and MQ-DS-E-6022
H. Sheet metal gages and finishes.
I. Filters with performance characteristics.
J. Dampers, including housings, linkages, and operators.

4.2 Shop Drawings

For each type of central station air handling unit indicated, shop drawings shall be submitted
and show details of the following as a minimum:

A. Wiring diagrams clearly indicating all earthing, power, control and signal wiring
and connections. Wiring diagrams shall differentiate between manufacturer installed
and customer installed wiring.
B. Manufacturers’ certified cut sheets indicating unit dimensions, weights, connection
points and lifting points.
C. Unit internal components layout and configuration.

4.3 Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manuals

For each type of central station air handling unit furnished, installation, operation and
maintenance manuals shall be submitted.
A. Unless otherwise specified, six bound copies of the installation, operation and
maintenance manuals shall be provided. Optionally, electronic copies of the manual
may be provided in a format acceptable to the owner.
B. Maintenance data shall include maintenance instructions, instructions for lubrication,
filter replacement, motor and drive replacement, and factory-recommended spare
parts lists.
C. The spare parts list shall be tabulated and include for every part the OEM’s
model/part number. Cross sectional views shall be provided showing locations of the
spare parts.
D. Maintenance data, product data, shop drawings, schematic and wiring diagrams shall
be included in the operating and maintenance manuals.

4.4 Recommended Spare Parts List

Submit factory recommended spare parts list, for inventory purpose, with price for each part.
List shall be tabulated and include, for every part, the OEM’s model/part number.

5.0 PRODUCT DELIVERY AND HANDLING

5.1 General Requirements

A. Deliver air handling units with factory installed shipping skids and lifting lugs; pack
small components in factory fabricated protective containers.
B. Handle air-handling units carefully to avoid damage to components, enclosures and
finish. Do not install damaged components; replace and return damaged components
to air handling unit Manufacturer.
C. Store air-handling units in clean, dry place and protect from weather dirt,
construction debris, physical damage, and construction traffic.
D. Comply with Manufacturer's rigging and installation instructions for unloading air
handling units and moving them to final locations.

6.0 WARRANTY

6.1 General Requirements

A. The Equipment described by this specification shall be quoted and sold in full
compliance with Terms and Conditions of Purchase.
B. The equipment manufacturer shall guarantee the entire unit to be free from defects in
material, design and/or workmanship for a period of twelve (12) months. The
warranty shall commence from the date the unit was commissioned and accepted by
the OWNER (MARAFIQ) for it’s beneficial use or eighteen (18) months from the
date of receiving the equipment at the owner job-site.

7.0 PRODUCTS

7.1 General

A. Provide factory-fabricated and factory-tested air handling units as specified herein.


B. Each unit shall consist of the following combination of modules as required by the
design:
1. Air handling unit module (draw through for single zone and blow through
for multi-zone).
2. Single zone or multi-zone cooling and/or heating-coil modules.
3. Access module (locate between the filter section and cooling coil section for
maintenance and inspection).
4. Filter module completed with filters.
5. Mixing, filter/mixing or return air module.
C. Units not provided with factory installed internal isolation shall be provided with
external isolators, sized and supplied by the unit manufacturer.
D. Control components shall meet the requirements of MQ-SP-H-4709.

7.2 Frame and Casing

A. General
1. Casing materials shall be formed and reinforced double wall insulated
panels, fabricated to allow removal for access to internal parts and
components, with joints between sections sealed.
2. Unless otherwise specified, casing shall be ASTM A653/A653M Z275
galvanized steel, steel gage as required for unit to withstand expected unit
operating pressures without bowing or deformation. Exterior casing panels
of central station air handling units located outdoors shall be capable of
withstanding a 2000 hour salt spray test in accordance with ASTM B117.
3. Reinforced points of support for either setting or hanging units shall be
provided.
4. Unless otherwise specified, unit exterior surfaces shall be painted with a
factory standard baked enamel finish. Refer to MQ-SP-M-4038 and MQ-SP-
M-4039 for any additional painting requirements.

B. Insulation
1. Insulation shall comply with NFPA 90A
2. Insulation materials shall comply with ASTM C1071 with coated surface
exposed to airstream to prevent erosion of glass fibers.
3. Minimum insulation thermal resistance shall be 2.29 m2●°K/W after
installation. The insulation material shall be fiberglass and comply with
ASTM C1071 a minimum 25 mm thick and have density of not less than 24
kg/m3.
4. Insulation fire hazard classification shall be a maximum flame-spread index
of 25 and smoke-developed index of 50, when tested according to
ASTM C411.
5. Insulation adhesive shall comply with NFPA 90A and ASTM C916.
6. Insulation mechanical fasteners shall be galvanized steel, suitable for
adhesive attachment, mechanical attachment, or welding attachment to duct
without damaging liner when applied as recommended by manufacturer and
without causing leakage in cabinet.
7. Insulation shall be factory applied with adhesive and mechanical fasteners to
the internal surface of section panels downstream from and including the
cooling coil section, incased between outside and inside panel.
C. Access Doors and Panels
1. Access Panels and Doors shall be fabricated from the same materials and
finishes as cabinet, complete with hinges, latches, handles, and gaskets.
Access panel hardware shall be suitable for use in temperature between 0°
and 50° C. Inspection and access panels and doors shall be sized and located
to allow periodic maintenance and inspections.
2. Access panels and doors shall be provided in the following locations:
a. Fan sections shall be provided with inspection and access panels or
doors.
b. Auxiliary access sections shall be provided with panels.
c. Coil sections shall be provided with inspection panels.
d. Damper sections shall be provided with inspection and access
panels or doors.
e. Filter sections shall be provided with inspection and access panels
or doors to allow periodic removal and installation of filters.
3. All access doors and panels shall have flexible bonding strap or wire for
suitable earthing link.
D. Condensate Drain Pans
1. Condensate drain pans shall be formed sections of stainless steel sheets
complying with requirements in ASHRAE 62. Pans shall be fabricated with

slopes in two planes to collect condensate from cooling coils (including coil
piping connections and return bends) when units are operating at maximum
catalogued face velocity across cooling coil.
2. Pans shall be double wall construction with the space between walls filled
with insulation and sealed moisture tight.
3. Pans shall have drain connections provided on the side of the unit as
specified.
4. Units with stacked coils shall be provided with intermediate drain pan
extending a minimum of 15 cm from downstream side of the upper coil
face. The condensate shall be piped to the main drain pan without flooding
the lower coils or passing condensate through the airstream of the lower
coils.

7.3 Fan Sections

A. Fan section shall be belt driven centrifugal consisting of housing, wheel, fan shaft,
bearings, motor and disconnect switch, drive assembly, and support structures.
B. Fan section shall be equipped with formed steel channel base for integral mounting
of fan, motor, and casing panels. Fans shall be mounted with vibration isolation.
C. Centrifugal fan housings shall be formed and reinforced steel panels to make curved
scroll housings with shaped cutoff, spun metal inlet bell with access doors or panels
to allow entry to internal parts and components.
D. Panel bracing shall be steel angle or channel iron member supports for mounting and
supporting fan scroll, wheel, motor, and accessories.
E. Performance Class shall be AMCA 99 pressure Class I, II, or III dependant on the
pressure of the system served by the unit.
F. Horizontal flanged split housing shall be of bolted construction.
G. Backward inclined fan wheels shall be of steel or aluminum construction with curved
inlet flange, backplate and backward inclined blades welded or riveted to flange and
backplate; cast iron or cast steel hub shall be riveted to backplate and fastened to
shaft with set screws.
H. Forward curved fan wheels shall be galvanized steel or aluminum construction with
inlet flange, backplate, and shallow blades with inlet and tip curved forward in
direction of airflow and mechanically secured to flange and backplate; cast steel hub
shall be swaged to backplate and fastened to shaft with set screws.
I. Airfoil fan wheels shall be steel or aluminum construction with smooth curved inlet
flange, heavy backplate, and hollow die formed airfoil shaped blades continuously
welded at tip flange and backplate; cast iron or cast steel hub shall be riveted to
backplate and fastened to shaft with set screws.
J. Steel fan wheel coating shall be powder baked enamel. Aluminum fan wheels shall
be coated in accordance with Section 9.0.

K. Shafts shall be statically and dynamically balanced and designed for continuous
operation at maximum rated fan speed and motor horsepower, with final alignment
and belt adjustment made after installation.
1. Shafts shall be turned, ground, and polished hot rolled steel with keyway
and shipped with a protective coating of lubricating oil.
2. Shafts shall be designed to operate at no more than 75 percent of first
critical speed at top of fan's speed range.
L. Bearings shall be one of the following types:
1. Pre-lubricated and sealed shaft bearings shall be self-aligning, pillow block
type ball bearings with an ISO 281 life of 120,000 hours.
2. Grease lubricated shaft bearings shall be self aligning, pillow block type,
tapered roller bearings with double locking collars and two piece, cast iron
housing, with an ISO 281 L10 life of 120,000 hours.
3. Grease lubricated shaft bearings shall be self aligning, pillow block type,
ball or roller bearings with adapter mount and two piece, cast iron housing
with an ISO 281 L10 life of 120,000 hours or ISO 281 L10 life of 120,000
hours as applicable.
M. Belt Drives
1. Belt drives shall be factory mounted, with final alignment and belt
adjustment made after installation with a 1.5 service factor.
2. Pulleys shall be cast iron or cast steel with split, tapered bushing;
dynamically balanced at factory.
3. Motor pulleys shall be adjustable pitch for use with 3.7 kW motors and
smaller; fixed pitch for use with motors larger than 3.7 kW. Pulleys shall be
selected so pitch adjustment is at the middle of adjustment range at fan
design conditions.
4. Belts shall be oil resistant, non-sparking, and non-static; matched sets shall
be provided for multiple belt drives.
5. Belt guards shall be fabricated to OSHA requirements, 2.7 mm thick, 20 mm
diamond mesh wire screen welded to steel angle frame or equivalent; prime
coated.
6. Motor mount shall be adjustable for belt tensioning.
N. Multi-zone dampers shall be factory mounted in galvanized steel frame. Damper
blades shall be constructed of galvanized steel, with blade seals and stainless steel
edge seals. Axles shall have self-lubricating nylon bearings. Linkage shall have
external connections.
O. Motors
1. Units shall be equipped with motors meeting the requirements of MQ-SP-
E-6022.
2. Motor torque characteristics shall be sufficient to accelerate driven loads.

3. All motors shall be duty rated for continuous operation for the electrical
supply indicated on the unit data sheets.
4. Motor shall be mounted on an adjustable base. Unit location or project
requirements may change motor construction requirements.

7.4 Cooling Coil Sections

A. Coil sections shall be designed and constructed to facilitate removal and replacement
of coil for maintenance and to ensure full airflow through coils.
B. Air handling units not provided with outside air chemical filtration shall have coils
coated in accordance with Section 9.0. Air handling unit shall provide rated capacity
after coils have been de-rated due to application of coating.
C. Chilled Water Coil
1. Water coils shall be continuous circuit coil, self-draining or cleanable coil
fabricated according to ARI 410.
2. Piping connections shall be NPT threaded for pipe sizes less than DN 50 or
flanged for pipe sizes DN 50 and above.
3. Coil tubes shall be copper.
4. Coil fins shall be copper with fin spacing of 2.12 mm minimum.
5. Fin and tube joint shall be mechanically bonded.
6. Headers shall be cast iron with cleaning plugs and drain and air vent
tappings, seamless copper tube with brazed joints, prime coated or
fabricated steel with brazed joints, prime coated.
7. Frames shall be galvanized steel channel.
8. Coils shall be design tested and rated according to ASHRAE 33 and
ARI 410. Working pressure rating shall be 1380 kPa, 163 C unless project
requirements dictate otherwise.
9. Coils shall be burst tested 2070 kPa and proof tested to 1380 kPa
underwater.
D. Direct Expansion Coil
1. Coil shall be designed and fabricated in accordance with ARI 410,
connected with soldered or brazed fittings. Refrigerant coils shall be
designed and tested in accordance with ASHRAE 15.
2. Coil tubes shall be copper.
3. Coil fins shall be copper with fin spacing of 2.12 mm minimum.
4. Fin and tube joint shall be mechanically bonded.
5. Suction and distributor shall be seamless copper tube with brazed joints.

6. Coils for full face active or face split operation shall have intertwined
circuits for equal loading of each circuit. Suction and liquid connections
shall be on the same end.
7. Frames shall be galvanized steel channel.
8. Coils shall be design tested and rated according to ASHRAE 33 and
ARI 410. Working pressure rating shall be 2070 kPa.
9. Coils shall be burst tested 3105 kPa and proof tested to 2070 kPa
underwater.

7.5 Filter Sections

A. Filter section shall be provided with filter holding frames arranged for flat or angular
orientation, with access doors on both sides of unit. Filters shall be removable from
at least one side. Units with widths larger than 1.83 m shall have filters removable
from both sides.
B. Filter sections shall be provided with 50.8 mm or 101.6 mm width filters of type and
efficiency specified.
C. Pre and final filters shall be provided in all air handling units. Filter efficiencies shall
be as specified in MQ-SP-H-4700.
D. All air handled by the unit shall pass through the filters before it contacts either the
heat transfer elements or the fans.

7.6 Damper Sections

A. Mixing boxes shall be provided with opposed blade galvanized steel dampers
mechanically fastened to steel operating rod, in reinforced in a galvanized steel
cabinet. Operating rods shall be connected with common linkage and interconnect
linkages so dampers operate simultaneously.
B. Combination filter/mixing boxes shall be provided with parallel blade galvanized
steel dampers, mechanically fastened to steel operating rods, in reinforced,
galvanized steel cabinet. Operating rods shall be connected with common linkage
and interconnect linkages so dampers operate simultaneously. Cabinet support
members shall hold pleated, flat permanent, or throwaway filters as specified. Hinged
access panels or doors shall be provided to allow removal of filters from both sides of
unit.
C. Damper blades shall rotate on stainless steel bearings. Damper blades shall be
galvanized steel, housed in a galvanized steel frame.
D. Damper leakage rate shall not exceed 2 percent of maximum flow and 1000 Pa
pressure differential in accordance with AMCA 500.
E. Outside air dampers shall be low leakage, double skin, airfoil blade galvanized steel
dampers with compressible jamb seals and extruded vinyl blade edge seals. Blade
arrangement shall be opposed blade with steel operating rods rotating in stainless
steel sleeve bearings mounted in a single galvanized-steel frame, and with operating

rods connected with a common linkage. Leakage rate shall not exceed 0.44 percent
of maximum flow at 1000 Pa pressure differential in accordance with AMCA 500.
F. A birdscreen shall be provided for outside air inlets if not provided in upstream
ductwork
G. Filter/mixing box filter section shall also meet the requirements of Section 7.5.

7.7 Electrical Protection and Controls

A. All electrical motors and associated control devices, shall be powered from one
single customer furnished supply (as shown on the equipment data sheet). Motors
and heaters shall each be provided with individual overcurrent and overload
protective devices and auxiliary control equipment, as applicable.
B. All electrical apparatus shall be protected against the harmful effects of short-circuits
and earth faults.
C. Unless a lower rating is specifically allowed elsewhere in the MARAFIQ Project
Specifications, electrical enclosures located indoors in air conditioned areas shall be
NEMA 3 (IP 44) or greater, electrical enclosures located indoors in a non-air
conditioned areas shall be NEMA 3S (IP 54) or greater, and electrical enclosures
located in outdoor areas shall be NEMA 4X (IP 65) or greater.
D. All electrical components shall be UL or FM listed.

7.8 Grounding

Two external grounding terminal points shall be provided to facilitate Customer connection of
the external grounding system to the equipment. All electrical equipment on or within the
packaged unit shall be grounded from these grounding points.

8.0 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Air handling unit electric motors and all other electrical and instrumentation equipment in hazardous
areas shall be suitable for installation in the hazardous area specified on the data sheet, and shall be of
spark resistant construction per AMCA 99.

9.0 COATINGS

Air handling unit coil and when specified, fan wheels, shall be coated with Heresite P-413 pure
phenolic thermosetting resinous coating. Coating thickness shall be 0.051 mm DFT. Preparation and
application of coating shall be in accordance with coating and coil manufacturer’s written instructions.

10.0 CAPACITY AND UNIT CHARACTERISTICS

10.1 General
A. Provide the applicable information listed in Attachment 1 or 2 for each central station
air-handling unit.
B. Outdoor units shall be rated at 50º C, or higher ambient temperature as required in
MQ-SP-C-2000. All mechanical and electrical components (such as bearings, wiring,
etc.) shall be able to operate in the project environmental conditions.

11.0 PROTECTION OF APPARATUS

11.1 General
A. Equipment and accessories shall be delivered with protective crating and coverings
as recommended by the equipment manufacturer.
B. Equipment and accessories shall be stored to prevent damage and protect them from
weather, dirt, fumes, water, and construction debris for a period of 6 months.
C. Equipment and accessories shall be handled in accordance with manufacturers
written rigging and installation instructions for unloading, transporting and setting in
final location.

12.0 TESTING

In addition to testing specified above, all unit electrical devices shall be energized as components to
ensure operation integrity prior to the unit shipment. Replacement of nonfunctioning items shall be
conducted with all reasonable speed and the quality assurance engineer shall certify that all such
changes have in fact been undertaken, prior to shipment.

13.0 IDENTIFICATION AND NUMBERING

Air handling units shall be tagged with a 40 mm x 125 mm x 1.5 mm 304 stainless steel plate with
engraved identification numbers (Owner’s Equipment Number, Manufacturer Name, Model No., Serial
No., Electric Data, and P.O. Number.) permanently riveted to the frame in a conspicuous location.
