SPECIFICATION – STATIONARY FIRE PUMPS

1.0 SCOPE
This specification describes the general requirements for horizontal and vertical firewater
pumps, drivers, controllers, gears, jockey pumps, starters, and accessories designed
specifically for fire protection service. Supplier shall consult the data sheets to determine if
UL/FM labeling is required. This specification supplements the data sheets on which the
operating conditions and special requirements are listed in detail for each pump. Where
conflicts exist, the Datasheet shall govern.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

4.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS


All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full compliance
with the respective health and safety requirements established by the following:

Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through
siphoning or back pressure from fire water piping.
In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be employed
throughout.

5.0 SUBMITTALS
The Contractor shall submit to MARAFIQ, the following items for review and approval before
commencing the work:
 Product Data
Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for
each item intended to be furnished and installed.

Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
 Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 20.
 Submit Coordination Drawings
 As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate sprinklers, systems, locations and symbols on the Shop Drawings
and As-built plans.
Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.
 Maintenance and Operating Instructions
Submit data conforming to NFPA 20 for maintenance of fie pumps.
Equipment manufacturer recommended spare parts and tools list.
 Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
 Test Reports
Accurately record and report the methods of testing, times and dates of the test,
witnesses to the test, and the results of the test.
Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements in NFPA
20.

6.0 QUALITY CONTROL


The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and propose
programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified quality for
approval.
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-Built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.

6.1 Engineering Responsibility


Preparation of working plans, calculations and field test reports by professional
specialized fire protection engineer.

6.2 Single-Source Responsibility


System components and accessories shall be obtained from one source and a single
manufacturer, as far as possible.

6.3 Product Quality


Products shall be free of defects in materials, fabrication, finish and installation.
All materials and performance shall meet the appropriate NFPA standard.
Each item of equipment shall be capable of performing its function over an extended
period of time with a minimum of attention and maintenance.
All equipment shall be constructed using new materials designs and built in
accordance with the best practices of the industry.
Each item of equipment shall be listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and / or
approved by Factory Mutual (FM).
Each major item of equipment shall bear the manufacturer’s name, trademark, serial
number and a UL or FM label.

6.4 Electrical Components, Devices and Accessories


Electrical components, devices and accessories shall be UL Listed and/or FM
Approved and shall meet the requirements of NFPA 70 and NFPA 72.

7.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 13. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the
installation of automatic wet sprinkler system. Components that do not affect system
operation, such as drain valves and signs, shall not be required to be listed.
System components shall be rated for the maximum working pressure to which they are
exposed, but not less than 12.1 bar (175 psi). System components installed outside, or in the
presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be constructed of materials that will resist corrosion
or shall be suitably protected from corrosion.
All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with the applicable
NFPA standards and the Project Specifications.
All valves, sprinklers, alarms and any additional fire fighting equipment shall be UL listed
and/or FM approved.
All fire department connections, couplings and thread types shall be fully coordinated and
matched with Local Fire Department requirements. No single thread type or coupling shall be
purchased before confirming and fulfilling Local Fire Department conditions.

8.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS


Pumps shall be designed for a continuous rise to shutoff. Pumps shall furnish not less than
150% of rated capacity at not less than 65% of rated discharge head. Shut off head (or dead-
head pressure) shall not exceed 140% of rated head at any design capacity for any type of
pump. Deviations from this shall be provided in writing to Purchaser and shall be agreed with
prior to proceeding.
Fire system piping shall be flanged.

All valves and piping downstream of the pumps must be designed for the full working
pressure of the pump discharge.
Materials of ASTM quality or approved substitutes shall be used. Castings shall be sound
and free from shrink or blow holes, scale, blisters, and other defects. The surfaces shall be
cleaned by Supplier’s standard methods. Casting burrs shall be filed or ground flush with the
surface of the casting.
If required on the data sheet, Supplier shall furnish a flow test header for all pumps with hose
valve test head and angle valves with brass caps and chains. Items shall be in accordance
with NFPA 20 and shipped loose for installation by others.
Automatic air release valve (both jockey and main fire water pumps) is to be furnished.
Circulation relief valve for thermal minimum flow protection shall be furnished for motor driven
main firewater pump only.
Main relief valve and sizing basis shall be furnished for engine driven firewater pump only.
Relief valves for other pumps shall be furnished as required per NFPA 20.
Equipment shall be suitable for outdoor installation in a desert environment with an ambient
temperature of 500C. Site conditions will be provided on the data sheet.
If manufacturer indicates protection from the environment by a house is warranted, it shall be
included as a separate item in his quotation. Manufacturer shall provide complete details
including dimensions and separation wall between diesel engine and motor driven pumps with
suitable ventilation.

9.0 VERTICAL PUMP REQUIREMENTS

9.1 Vertical Pumps - General


Pumps shall be designed to deliver the water at rated discharge pressure as
measured at the discharge head flange with a pumping water level of minimum
submergence as specified. The rated total discharge head (TDH) and performance
curves shall include all internal losses in the pump and the column pipe. Supplier
shall provide two performance curves for vertical pumps. The first performance curve
shall show the total head developed by the pump (bowl discharge). The second
performance curve shall show the net head developed at the discharge flange after
deducting the static head and discharge piping losses.
Engine driven vertical pumps shall be driven through a right angle gear box. Motor
driven pumps shall be directly coupled.
The rated speed of vertical pumps shall not exceed 1800 rpm.
If a vertical pump is furnished with a mechanical seal, it shall have a valved vent
orifice connection on the seal chamber or shall have flush piping located to provide
fluid at the seal face prior to start up. Orifice calculations are required to be provided.
Minimum orifice size shall be 3.2 mm.

9.2 Vertical Pumps – Discharge Column Assembly


All flange faces shall be parallel and machined for rabbet fit to permit accurate
alignment of the spiders (bearing retainers) without leakage, and with a run-out not to
exceed 0.0508 mm (0.002 inch) TIR (total indicated runout). Gaskets are not to be
used at the flange connection.

The column pipe shall be provided in interchangeable sections. Each section shall
not exceed a length of 3048 mm. The top and bottom column sections may be
unique and shall not exceed 1524 mm in length. Column piping shall be
manufactured by a Purchaser approved manufacturer. Material shall be as specified
on the data sheet. The column piping shall be of sufficient strength to support
mechanical and hydraulic loads (including when the column piping and pump bowl
assembly is lifted with water in it).
The column assembly shall be open lineshaft with cutless rubber bearings held in
place by 316 stainless steel spiders located, as a minimum, at each column flange.
The machine bolts and nuts for the column pipe flanges shall be 316 stainless steel, a
minimum of 16 mm (5/8 inch) in diameter with a minimum of 12 bolts at each flange
connection. Two nuts shall be used per bolt. When installed, the end of each bolt
shall be flush with the outer end of the nut to avoid aquatic growth collecting on the
threaded surfaces of the bolt.
Column centralizers shall be provided which shall be 316 stainless steel.
Supplier shall make a design analysis of all columns to verify their structural integrity
and all vibrating frequencies. As an alternate, Supplier may cite proven experience
with the proposed column size and length in a similar installation.
The line shaft shall have a TIR that shall not exceed 0.127 mm (0.005 inch) per 3 m
of shaft length.
The suction strainer shall be of the basket type bolt-on construction and shall have a
free area of at least four (4) times the area of the pump suction. Strainer and screen
shall meet the requirements of NFPA 20. Metallurgy shall be as specified on the data
sheet.
The discharge head (above ground type) shall be located above the top of the
structural steel baseplate.
The discharge head shall be designed for the entire support for the right angle gear,
column piping, line shaft, bowl assembly and strainer.
The stuffing box shall be removable and equipped with a high pressure head and
throat bushing. The stuffing box shall have a register fit on the discharge head.
Stuffing boxes subjected to discharge pressure shall have a bleedoff line to the
suction side in order to reduce the differential pressure across the packing materials.
The outlet flange of the discharge head shall be ANSI 150# flanges with flange face
as indicated on the data sheets. An outlet shall be provided on the discharge head to
supply cooling water to the engine heat exchanger. The discharge head shall be
mounted to the baseplate using minimum 25.4 mm (1 inch) diameter bolts.
Two access openings with guards located 900 from the discharge centerline shall be
provided in the discharge head. Guards shall be non-sparking material. Aluminum
shall not be used in near-coastal marine and offshore environments. The discharge
head baseplate shall be equipped with a 25.4 mm (one inch) 3000# coupling for
injection of suitable biocide.
The discharge head shall be equipped with two lifting lugs designed with a safety
factor of 4 to 1 based on lifting the entire assembly consisting of the column piping,
shaft and pump bowls and impellers.

Discharge head baseplate shall be equipped with one cable penetration and one thief
hatch for dropping 76.2 mm (3 inch) diameter chlorine tablets, if required.
Bowls shall be bolted type with register fits to ensure alignment. Renewable bowl
wear rings shall be furnished with an interference fit.
Impellers shall be the enclosed type. Impellers shall be secured to the shaft by a key-
and-split collar device with positive locking.
Line shaft minimum diameter shall be 38 mm. It is preferred for shafts to have key-
and-split ring couplings. Couplings shall be located a maximum of 300 mm from the
column pipe flanges.
Shaft sleeves shall be furnished at the bearing location and at the packing or seal
area. Shaft sleeves shall extend to the packing seal gland area.

9.3 Right Angle Gear


If noted on the data sheet, the right angle gear shall be Factory Mutual (FM)
approved.
Supplier shall furnish a right angled, spiral beveled, totally enclosed gear box unit of
high efficiency, single reduction, with a vertical hollow shaft for connection to the
pump.
Gears shall be designed to transmit the maximum power capable of being produced
by the engine.
A non-reverse ratchet shall be provided. The gear shall have a flanged, rigid coupling
spacer for impeller adjustment.
The gear box shall be furnished with an oil sump temperature gauge, be air cooled
and include a 90-10 CuNi cooling coil for additional cooling when temperatures are
above the design ambient. Gearbox oil temperatures shall not exceed 820C at any
operating or ambient condition. The discharge of the cooling coil shall be tied into the
discharge line of the engine heat exchanger.
Gearboxes shall be rated for the driver nameplate rating, including service factors of
2.0.
Gear ratio shall be suitable for the rated speeds of the pump and driver and the gear
head shall be designed to transmit the maximum power required by the pump at any
point throughout the pump characteristic curve from shut-off to maximum capacity.
Incorporated into the gearhead shall be a thrust bearing of sufficient capacity and
ample safety factor to carry the entire weight of the rotating parts of the pump plus the
hydraulic thrust of the pump impellers. The up thrust rating shall be at least 30% of
the down thrust rating. Thrust bearing ratings shall be provided with the proposal.
The right angle gear box shall be mounted to the discharge head using bolts which
are a minimum of 25.4 mm (one inch) in diameter.
If the Supplier cannot demonstrate specific system experience with identical
equipment, a complete torsional analysis shall be performed on all vertical multistage
pumps driven by engines and gears.

9.4 Couplings
9.4.1 Engine – Gear Box Coupling

The engine-gear box coupling shall be a double universal joint shaft,


complete with shaft flanges for the driver and the driven shaft. It shall allow
either the driver or the gearbox to be removed without disturbing the other.
The engine hub shall be splined to accommodate engine growth.
9.4.2 Gear Box – Pump Coupling
The gear box-pump coupling shall be long enough to allow replacement of
the mechanical seal or packing without moving any other equipment. The
minimum length of this coupling shall be 125 mm.
9.4.3 Shaft Guard
A removable, non-sparking shaft guard shall be provided around the
couplings. The guard shall be designed to withstand a concentrated load of
90 kg at mid-span and shall comply with OSHA or equivalent standards.
Aluminum is unacceptable for marine and offshore applications. Bolting shall
be a minimum diameter of 9.525 mm (3/8 inch).

10.0 HORIZONTAL AND JOCKEY PUMP REQUIREMENTS


Jockey pumps for pressure maintenance shall be of the overhung, single stage centrifugal
design and shall be mounted on rigid baseplates if specified on the data sheet. Jockey
pumps shall be electric motor driven. Drivers for jockey pumps shall be rated for continuous
operation.
Where jockey pumps are provided, the minimum size shall be capable of making up the
allowable system leakage rate within 20 minutes at a pressure equal to the desired firewater
static system pressure.
Pumps shall be equipped with an auto-venting device and connection unless they are self-
venting.
Horizontal pumps shall have double volutes.
Suction and discharge flanges shall have the same rating to permit hydrostatic pressure
testing of the entire pump casing.
On horizontally split pumps, casing shall be furnished with tongue-and-groove fitted,
renewable wear rings.

10.1 Impellers
Impellers shall be closed, dynamically balanced, of one-piece construction and shall
be keyed to the shaft. Impellers shall be individually secured against axial movement
in either direction.

10.2 Shafts and Shaft Sleeves


Shafts shall be designed to transmit full driver output torque.
Shaft deflection in the stuffing box area shall be limited to 0.0508 mm (0.002 inch)
while operating throughout the entire range, under the most severe dynamic
conditions with the maximum diameter impeller.
Hard faced shaft sleeves are required on all packed pumps in the stuffing box area.
Shaft sleeves shall be locked or keyed, made of corrosion-erosion resistant material
and replaceable. Shaft sleeve ends shall extend 3 mm beyond the outer face of the
packing or the seal gland.

10.3 Bearings
Bearings shall be oil lubricated. Ring oil hydrodynamic-sleeve radial bearings shall
be required under any of the following conditions:
For between bearing pumps where DN factors are 300,000 or greater (DN = bearing
bore diameter in inches X RPM).
Where antifriction radial bearings fail to meet the minimum AFBMA L-10 rating life of
three years or 25,000 hours.
Where the driver rated power is 300 kW or greater.
Each bearing housing shall be provided with the following:
A Trico constant level oiler secured to the bearing housing.
A housing drain plug with a visible water trap to remove condensation from the oil
sump.
A permanent indication of proper oil level, accurately located at the required oil level
line and clearly marked on the outside of the bearing housing, adjacent to the
constant-level sight feed oiler.
Skin temperatures on the bearing housing during shop testing and field operation
shall not exceed 880C. Bearing oil temperatures shall not exceed 820C at any
operating or ambient condition.
Sleeve bearings shall have provisions for shaft vibration measurements adjacent to
the bearings.

10.4 Couplings
Couplings shall be non-lubricated and shall consist of forged steel hubs and spacers
with 300 series stainless steel flexible elements. Couplings shall be keyed in place.
Disk material shall be 300 series stainless steel. Carbon steel disks are
unacceptable.
The rating of the coupling shall be equal to the maximum driver horsepower, including
the service factor.
The maximum operating torque load of the coupling shall be limited to 80% of the
coupling Supplier’s rating.
The hub bore and rim of the couplings shall be concentric within 0.0125 mm.
Spacer length shall permit removal of the pump rotor, the bearing brackets or the
mechanical seal (if provided) without disturbing the driver. Minimum spacer length
shall be 125 mm.
For horizontal pumps driven by motors rated above 75 kW, and for pumps driven by
turbines, the Supplier shall deliver a pilot-bored driver half-coupling to the driver
Supplier’s plant for final boring and mounting.

11.0 BASEPLATES AND MOUNTING


Each pump with vertical driver or right angle gear shall be mounted on Supplier’s standard
baseplate.
Horizontal pumps or drivers shall be furnished with sturdy drain rim type fabricated steel
baseplates.

No component of the unit (or accessories) may overhang the baseplate except the motor
conduit box.
Baseplates shall have a full metal deck with provisions for complete drainage through a 25.4
mm (1 inch) NPT drain connection at the edge of the baseplate.
A minimum of two 101.6 mm (4 inch) diameter grout holes with raised lips to prevent liquid
accumulation over the grout shall be provided along with sufficient vents for complete grout
distribution, arranged to allow for grouting with all components in place, shall be included.
Where practical, use 152.4 mm (6 inch) grout holes. Data sheet shall indicate if grout will be
used in the field.
Pump and driver support pads shall be machined flat and in the same plane. Driver support
pads shall be machined to have 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) (minimum) shim space available for
horizontal pumps and drivers.
Horizontal jack screws (or Purchaser approved substitute) shall be provided to achieve
horizontal alignment on all baseplates for drivers in excess of 454 kg.
Shaft centerlines of pumps shall be of sufficient height above the baseplate to permit the
piping of all auxiliary connections.
Supplier’s pump and driver units shall be aligned, but not doweled, to the baseplate.

12.0 ELECTRICAL
Electrical components shall be tropicalized and suitable for the electrical area classification
specified on the data sheet.
Supplier shall furnish grounding provisions for all equipment. Bolted equipment shall have
separate ground lugs with ground bonding cable connected to skid structure.
Electrical end devices shall be terminated at a skid mounted equipment control panel. All
field switches (hand/off/auto; reset; etc.) and status indication lights shall be mounted on this
panel.

13.0 FIREWATER PUMP CONTROLLERS (CONTROL PANELS)


Supplier shall design and supply Firewater Pump Controllers (hereinafter referred to as
controllers) to be located on the skid. The electronic controllers shall be specifically designed
for firewater service in accordance with UL 218 and be UL listed. There shall be a dedicated
panel for each unit.
Controllers shall be designed and arranged for equipment skid mounting and prewired. A
separate controller shall be furnished for each of the following: electric motor driven main
firewater pump; diesel engine driven main firewater pump; and jockey pumps.
Electric motor driven firewater pump controllers shall be of the combined manual and
automatic type suitable for across-the-line starting of a 3 phase, 60 cycle, 460 volt squirrel
cage motor (power as required by pump manufacturer) for motors 150 kW and below and 3
phase, 60 cycle, 4160 volt for motors which are 185 kW and above. Motors shall be furnished
in accordance with Marafiq Motor Specifications. Controllers shall include, as a minimum, the
following:
a) Isolating switch

Diesel engine-driven firewater pump controllers shall be of the combined manual and
automatic type. Adequate bracing and suitable vibration isolators shall be provided by the
Supplier. Control devices required for automatic operation shall be within locked cabinet with
break glass panel with provisions for releasing lock for emergency opening of door. It shall
include, as a minimum, the following:
a) Main control selector switch
b) Integral pressure sensitive switch for automatic start of diesel engine. The pressure
switch shall have a calibrated dial adjustment for pressure setting over a range of
5.86 barg through 9.65 barg (85 psig through 140 psig).
c) Provisions for automatically alternating dual storage batteries for cranking and
control power.
d) Intermittent cranking of engine with lockout, if engine fails to start within 90 seconds.
e) Visual indication for the following, as a minimum:
 Power available battery #1
 Power available battery #2
 Power available in starting circuit
a) Visual and audible alarms for the following, as a minimum:
 Engine failed to start
 High engine jacket water temperature
 Low oil pressure
 Overspeed (shutdown)
 Low fuel oil day tank level

c) Automatic battery charger at its rated voltage shall be capable of fully restoring the
batteries within a 24 hour period.
d) For the air start system, the controller shall be of an “air to start/positive action (air)
to kill” design. Once the engine is started, no air or electrical power shall be required
to keep the engine running. Low pressure sensors for air cylinders (if provided) shall
be supplied in the controller by Supplier.

13.1 Remote Alarm and Signal Interface


Auxiliary contacts shall be provided and connected to interface terminals for
extension to remote annunciator. Two contacts shall be furnished for each of the
following indications and/or alarms:
a) Electric Motor Driven Firewater Pumps
 Pump running
 Power failure
 Phase reversal
a) Diesel Engine Driven Firewater Pumps
 Pump running
 Main control switch “Not in Automatic”
 Trouble on controller or engine

14.0 ELECTRIC MOTORS


Motors shall comply with the Marafiq Motor Specification(s) and codes referenced therein.
Motor service factor shall be 1.15.
Supplier shall furnish to Purchaser the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the motor.
Motor drivers for vertical pumps shall be supplied, shop-mounted and aligned by the supplier.
Motor thrust bearings shall be designed to carry the maximum additional up thrust and down
thrust the pump may develop at any time during operation. The pump Supplier shall provide
the maximum up thrust and down thrust loads to be imposed on the motor thrust bearing in
the proposal.
A non-reverse ratchet is required on all vertical turbine pump motor drivers.

15.0 DIESEL ENGINES


Diesel Engines shall be furnished in accordance with NFPA 20 and specifically listed (UL or
FM) for fire pump service by a testing laboratory.
Fly wheel guards shall have openings with removable covers for barring over the machine
and providing access to the timing marks and fly wheel center (if available).
Diesel Engines shall be rated in compliance with NFPA 20.
The diesel engine shall operate at a rated speed of not over 1800 rpm and shall develop
sufficient horsepower to drive the pump with reserve power as required by NFPA 20 when
0
operating at sea level and inlet air temperature of 35 C.

Supplier shall furnish horsepower calculations to include all NFPA 20 de-ratings.


Engine shall have a mechanical fuel transfer pump and unit type injector. Fuel injection shall
be positive action, constant stroke actuated by a cam shaft driven by gears from the engine
crankshaft. System shall be complete with fuel filter, transfer pump, etc. as described in
NFPA 20.
A full flow pressure engine lubrication system shall be provided complete with pump, strainer,
piping, heat exchanger and full flow duplex oil filter equipped with a bypass valve and
pressure gauges and easily removed filter elements. Each flexible hose shall be the wire
braided reinforced 316 stainless steel bellows type.
The engine jacket and lube oil cooling system shall be of the closed circuit type as specified
by NFPA 20, including a circulating pump driven by the engine, a 90-10 copper nickel, red
brass or aluminum bronze heat exchanger and a reliable engine jacket temperature regulating
device. An opening shall be provided in this circuit for filling the system, checking coolant
level and adding make-up water when required.
The engine cooling system shall be pre-charged with an anti-freeze/water mixture in
accordance with the engine manufacturer’s recommendation.
Cooling water supply for the heat exchanger shall be from the discharge of the firewater
pump. The cooling water loop shall include shut-off valves, a strainer and a constant
pressure, pilot operated valve in accordance with NFPA 20. The cooling loop shall be tied
into the cooling coil in the right angle gear. The supplier shall pre-pipe the cooling water
piping between the engine and pump within the confines of the skid unit.
A pressure gauge shall be installed in the cooling water supply system on the engine side of
the last manual valve. A bypass line with manual valves and stainless steel trainer shall be
installed around the control valve assembly. Ball vales shall be provided in the Y-outlet of the
strainers.
A thermostatically controlled electric jacket water heater 480V if >7.5kW or 208V if <7.5kW
0
shall be furnished to maintain the jacket cooling water temperature above 49 C.
The inlet to the heat exchanger and the waste water line from the heat exchanger shall be
316 stainless steel braided flexible hose with threaded ends. The discharge line from the
heat exchanger shall be piped to the skid edge terminating in a union connection.
Air cooled, fan type radiator coolers shall be fabricated from corrosion resistant materials.
All engine instruments such as gauges and indicators shall be placed on a suitable panel
securely mounted on the same side of the skid as the fire pump controller. The firewater
pump operator shall be able to see both panels at the same time. Panel shall be of 14 gauge,
316 stainless steel construction. A totalizing type tachometer, oil pressure gauge, jacket
water temperature gauge and lube oil temperature gauge shall be provided.

15.1 Speed Control


The engine governor shall be designed to prevent excessive speed if the pump loses
suction.
Engines shall be provided with a govener capable of regulating the engine speed
within +/- 5% of rated speed.
The governor shall be field adjustable and shall be set and secured to maintain rated
pump speed at maximum pump load.
No manual control throttles shall be provided.

The overspeed shutdown device shall operate via a fuel control valve and an air
intake shutoff valve, if furnished.

15.2 Air System


Air filters shall be of the dry replaceable type, equipped with indicator, suitable for the
environment listed in the data sheets.
For marine environments, pre-cleaners shall be furnished to remove airborne water
contaminants before reaching the main filter elements. The air cleaner on the engine
shall be waterproofed to withstand the marine environment.
Engine air intake shall be equipped with a flapper type shutdown valve. The SDV
shall be capable of manual and automatic operation and shall be auto-resetting such
that it automatically returns to a run position after being operated.

15.3 Exhaust System


Each engine shall have an independent exhaust system. Engine exhaust shall be
piped to a safe point. Exhaust piping shall be adequately sized and as short as
possible. Backpressure shall not exceed Supplier’s recommendations. Supplier to
state maximum allowable exhaust backpressure.
A seamless or welded, corrugated (not interlocked) flexible connection made of 316L
stainless steel shall be made between the engine outlet and the exhaust pipe.
Engine muffler (silencer) shall be residential grade spark and flame arresting exhaust
silencer and shall be capable of being bolted to an ANSI 150# flange on its outlet
connection. Exhaust silencer and piping shall be rigidly supported to skid by
Supplier. Silencers shall have vibration isolators. Exhaust pipe shall be designed to
prevent rainwater from entering the engine.
If required, exhaust piping and muffler (silencer) shall be adequately insulated for
personnel and fire protection.

15.4 Diesel Fuel System


Supplier shall furnish a complete Underwriter’s Listed (UL) type fuel system as
described and illustrated in NFPA 20.
The fuel tank shall be placed underneath the diesel engine for space considerations.
Pump skid may be used as the fuel tank.
The tank shall be constructed by plating the interior of the skid with a minimum plate
thickness of 6.35 mm (¼ inch). All nozzles less than 50.8 mm (2 inch) shall be 3000#
couplings. All couplings shall be seal-welded. All nozzles 50.8 mm (2 inch) and
larger shall be ANSI 150#. The fuel tank bottom shall be sloped 6.35 mm (¼ inch) per
foot towards the drain end of the tank and equipped with a fire safe drain valve.
The useable portion of the fuel tank shall be sized for a minimum of 12 hours fuel
capacity, based on the fuel consumption at the rated engine conditions, unless
otherwise stated on the data sheet. Tank shall have an armored sight glass type
level gauge, screened fill pipe connection, flame arrestor, drain valve, overflow
connection, supply and return connections. Tank shall also have low level switch to
alarm at skid and at DCS panel. Switch shall bet set at 50% tank capacity. Tank
shall have vapor space to allow for expansion of fuel.

Fuel filters shall be per Supplier standard with 10 micron nominal replaceable
cartridge elements, easily replaced.
Fuel overflow line shall be piped to the skid drain pan.
Flame arrestor shall be located a minimum of 3048 mm above the fuel tank fill nozzle.

15.5 Air Starting System (if required)


Data sheet will specify if air start is required. If air start system is required, Supplier
shall indicate the maximum allowable back pressure at the edge of the skid flange for
the starter at the full rated starting air flow.
Engine shall be equipped with a T.D.I. or equivalent turbostart air starter. Alternately,
the engine could be equipped with a vane motor such as Pow-r-Quik or equivalent.
The size and model number shall be compatible with the engine quoted by the engine
supplier.
A 316 stainless steel flexible braided hose with threaded ends shall be provided
between the air piping and the starter on the skid.
The air receiver shall be furnished by Supplier and built to ASME code design. It
shall have:
 Capacity for six consecutive cranking periods of 30 seconds duration each.
 Pressure gauge
 Hand hole 200 mm in diameter
 Inlet and outlet valves
 Pressure relief valve
 Drain and/or blowdown valve
 Nameplate specifying the manufacturing and design/hydrostatic test pressure.
Flow control valve shall be installed downstream of the supply regulator. It shall be
an air-operated, high capacity valve with auto-manual pilot valve.
All fittings, tubing, instrumentation and valves shall be type 316L stainless steel. An
air supply sight glass and lubricator shall be provided.
A panel mounted low pressure switch set to alarm at 90% of normal full operating
pressure shall be provided.
The air supply system shall be reliable.
A failure to alarm shall be furnished in accordance with NFPA 20.
Alternatively, for offshore installations, air cylinders such as Linde Type K or
equivalent and charged to 152 barg at 210C (2200 psig at 700F) with air can be
supplied in lieu of the air receiver. Three cylinders shall be provided mounted on the
firewater pump package skid without the use of chains and cables. Two cylinders
shall be for automatic air backup system and the third one for manual operation only.
Cylinder outlets shall be manifolded and valved together for ease of operation.

15.6 Electric Starting System


Electrical starting systems shall be fully self-contained and shall include a DC motor,
batteries and battery charger. Batteries and charging system shall be in accordance
with NFPA 20 and the following.
Each engine shall be provided with two storage battery units. At a temperature of
4.50C, each battery unit shall have twice the capacity sufficient to maintain the
cranking speed recommended by the engine manufacturer through a 3 minute
attempt to start cycle which is 15 seconds cranking and 15 seconds rest, in six
consecutive cycles.
Heavy duty, lead acid batteries shall be furnished in a dry charge condition with
electrolyte liquid in a separate container. Electrolyte shall be added at the time the
engine is put into service and the battery is given a conditioning charge. Nickel-
cadmium batteries shall be furnished. Batteries shall be provided with battery cables
and protected by metal cover.
Two means for recharging storage batteries shall be provided. One shall be the
generator or alternator furnished with the engine. The other shall be an
automatically controlled charger taking power from an alternating current power
source. If an alternating current power source is not available or is not reliable,
another charging method in addition to the generator or alternator furnished with the
engine shall be provided.
Battery chargers shall be specifically listed for fire pump service. The rectifier shall
be a semiconductor type. The charger for a lead acid battery shall be a type that
automatically reduces the charging rate to less than 500 mA when the battery
reaches a full charge condition.
The battery charger at its rated voltage shall be capable of delivering energy into a
full discharge battery in such a manner that it will not damage the battery. It shall
restore to the battery 100% of the batter’s reserve capacity or ampere-hour rating
within 24 hours.
The charger shall be marked with the reserve capacity or ampere-hour rating of the
largest capacity battery that it can recharge in compliance with the above.
An ammeter with an accuracy of 5% of the normal charging rate shall be furnished to
indicate the operation of the charger.
The charger shall be designed such that it will not be damaged or blow fuses during
the cranking cycle of the engine when operated by an automatic or manual controller.
The charger shall automatically charge at the maximum rate whenever required by
the state of charge of the battery.
The battery charger shall be arranged to indicate loss of current output on the load
side of the direct current (dc) overcurrent protective device where not connected
through a control panel.
Storage batteries shall be rack-supported above the floor, secured against
displacement and located where they will not be subject to excessive temperature,
vibration, mechanical injury or flooding with water. They shall be readily accessible
for servicing. Battery cables shall be sized in accordance with the engine
manufacturer’s recommendations considering the cable length required for the
specific battery location.

 Current carrying parts shall not be less than 305 mm above the floor level.
 All remote pressure switches, flow switches and control stations in classified
locations shall be explosion proof.
 Maintenance free, permanently filled batteries shall not be used.
 Electrical equipment not kept inside heated buildings (such as automatic starter
relays or battery chargers) shall be installed in stainless steel watertight NEMA
type 4X enclosures.

16.0 STRUCTURAL
Supplier shall furnish structural steel skid. Skid shall have full depth load bearing members
running both longitudinally and transversely.
Supplier shall provide four (4) adequately sized lifting attachments for proper handling of the
equipment during transporting, handling and installation. If pad eyes are used, they shall
have a safety factor of 3.
Lifting attachments shall be located to maintain a package at near level altitude while lifting it
(maximum allowable tilt shall be 5% from horizontal). Equipment and ancillaries on the skid
shall be located such that they will avoid interference with slings during lifting. If this is not
able to be accomplished, a spreader bar shall be furnished by Supplier.

17.0 PAINTING
A standard finish paint is acceptable only if it is suitable for the site environmental conditions
and the component design temperature. Supplier shall submit the painting specifications for
Puchaser’s review.
Stainless steel surfaces, internal and finished surfaces (such as flange faces, shafts and
couplings) shall not be painted.
Final color shall be red for fire water service.

18.0 SPARE PARTS


Supplier shall provide a unit priced list of recommended spare parts for start-up and
commissioning and one year operation. Spare parts information shall be submitted in
accordance with Suppliers Drawing and Data Commitment Form.

19.0 PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE


The complete pumping assembly and all control equipment shall be guaranteed in writing for
pressure, capacity, and power consumption as required by NFPA 20.

19.1 Engine
Supplier shall guarantee all work to be free from defects in design, workmanship,
materials and equipment in accordance with the purchase order requirements.
19.1.1 Operating Under Load
Engine performance shall be guaranteed for ¼, ½ and full load operation at
the ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. Engines shall be

guaranteed to be capable of operation at 110% of full rated load for 2 hours


per 24 hours of operation.
19.1.2 Torque and Speed
Each engine shall be guaranteed to deliver the rated torque at the rated
speed for the type of service and site conditions specified, with no negative
tolerances allowed. The actual engine fuel heat rate shall not exceed the
guaranteed heat rate at full load. Guaranteed fuel heat rate to be stated in
Supplier’s proposal.

20.0 INSPECTION
Supplier shall furnish the Purchaser copies of Supplier's inspection and quality control plan.
For equipment to be inspected by Purchaser, inspection hold or witness points and
communication and notification procedures shall be established prior to the start of
fabrication.
Materials and workmanship shall be subject to inspection by the Purchaser in the shop and/or
in the field.
Purchaser’s inspector will check, as a minimum, equipment components, dimensions, and
quality of workmanship against certified drawings, data, and purchase order documents.
Supplier's weld inspector shall be qualified to AWS D1.1-CWI.
Purchaser reserves the right to inspect fabrication and welding of all components prior to start
of coating operations. Supplier shall provide five business days notification prior to initiation
of coating operations for inspection of unit.
Supplier shall facilitate Purchaser inspector’s work by furnishing copies of specified
certifications for materials, shop test data, etc. to verify compliance with specifications.
Supplier shall maintain for the inspector’s review such other records as are needed to ensure
compliance with material and fabrication specifications.
Purchaser shall be notified of all deviations from the original approved manufacturing
drawings. Any deviation shall be subject to Purchaser’s approval.
Any work which does not conform to the requirements of this specification shall be rejected
and replaced or redone at the Supplier’s expense to the satisfaction of the Purchaser.

21.0 TESTING
Supplier standard operational tests, in accordance with NFPA 20, Hydraulic Institute
Standards, and acceptable to the approving authority (UL or FM) shall be performed at the
Supplier’s facility to provide detailed performance data and to demonstrate that the pumps,
drivers, piping and controllers are in compliance with this specification, NFPA 20 and with
other applicable standards and codes.
Supplier shall provide individuals qualified to perform the tests assigned.
At least four (4) weeks in advance, Supplier shall provide a detailed testing procedure and
checklist for Purchaser’s approval for all tests.
Notification for testing shall be given to Purchaser a minimum of 10 business days prior to
testing.
The following types of testing are to be conducted in the Supplier shop:

A field acceptance test is required to confirm proper performance and shop test data. It shall
be witnessed by the authority having jurisdiction.
Calibrated test equipment shall be used for all tests. Calibrated gauges shall bear a label with
the latest date of calibration. They shall have been calibrated within the last year of the test
date.

21.1 Hydrostatic Testing


For hydrostatic tests, all exterior surfaces and welds subject to pressure shall be
clean and dry.
Prior to pressure testing, equipment shall be thoroughly cleaned internally and
external surfaces shall be free of weld spatter, scale and other foreign material.
Gasket compounds other than graphite and oil or grease shall not be used.
All pump casings, vertical discharge head, and column piping, all bowls and pump
bowl assembly, etc. shall be hydrostatically tested for a period of 30 minutes.
 Test pressure shall be 1.5 times the sum of the pump’s shutoff head (based on
maximum impeller) plus the maximum allowable suction head.
 Minimum test pressure shall be 17.24 barg.
 Visible leakage or a drop in pressure shall be unacceptable at any time during
the test.
 Cooling passages and jackets for bearings and stuffing boxes shall be tested to
a minimum of 7.9 barg.
After assembly and after all leaks have been located and stopped, the hydrostatic
testing for piping and vessels shall be conducted.
 Testing shall be at 1.5 times the design pressure for 30 minutes.
 Testing against block valves shall not be permitted.
 After testing, each item shall be drained and air dried.
New gaskets shall be installed in equipment joints that are opened for any reason
after assembly or pressure test, except ring type joint gaskets may be reused if
undamaged.
Each test shall be recorded on a calibrated chart recorder. After the hydrotest is
completed, the Supplier shall furnish Purchaser with certification papers.

21.2 Performance Testing


Pumps shall furnish not less than 150% of rated capacity at not less than 65% of total
rated head. Shut off head shall not exceed 140% of rated head for any type of pump.
Certified performance test to include the following capacity test points taken at rated
speed with job driver:
 Shut Off
 Minimum continuous stable flow
 Half way between minimum flow and rated flow
 Rated flow
 150% of rated flow (not applicable to jockey pump)
 120% of BEP (for furnished impeller diameter)
Acceptance criteria shall be per Hydraulic Institute standards, Level A (head
acceptance criteria at 110% of rated flow is not permitted).
During shop performance test, vibration readings shall be taken at each bearing
housing in two radial directions (x, y) at 900 to each other. These readings shall be
taken at each capacity test point noted above except shut off. Vibration shall not
exceed 7.62 mm/sec (0.3 in/sec) (unfiltered) and 5 mm/sec (0.2 in/sec) (filtered).
A retest is required if the pump has been dismantled to be modified after any failed
test.
After the test has been accepted by Purchaser, the water shall be drained and
system blown dry with air. Corrosion inhibiting oil shall be sprayed into the pump.

21.3 String Test (Option)


After the testing of individual equipment and/or components, the complete unit shall
be assembled and a string test performed at the Supplier’s facility.
The purpose of the test is to demonstrate all equipment functions together. It is not a
performance test.
Test shall be conducted for a minimum of one hour at steady state conditions after
stabilization.
All equipment used shall be the job equipment.
All readings (pressure, temperature, vibration, etc.) shall be monitored and recorded.
A test report including all test readings shall be submitted to Purchaser for approval.

21.4 Controller Testing


Certified manufacturer’s tests in accordance with UL/FM requirements shall be
conducted. Controller testing shall be conducted under the supervision of the
Controller manufacturer’s representative.
As a minimum, no fewer than six automatic and six manual operations shall be
performed during the acceptance test. For electric motor drives, a phase reversal
test shall be included. Controllers shall be functionally tested per NFPA 20 to ensure
all parameters have been checked.
Test report shall be submitted to Purchaser for approval prior to shipment.

21.5 Field Acceptance Test


The Supplier shall furnish a qualified engineer to supervise field start-up, acceptance
testing and adjustment of all equipment. Supplier’s engineer shall witness the test to
ensure compliance with the specification and code requirements. Purchaser will
witness the test along with the authority having jurisdiction.
Calibrated test equipment shall be used. Calibration shall have occurred within the
last year of the date of the field acceptance test.
Final acceptance shall be based on field performance as specified by NFPA 20 for
fixed pumping units.
A test certificate for Fire Pump Systems shall be provided in accordance with NFPA
20. Approval by Purchaser is required.

22.0 DOCUMENTATION
Supplier shall supply the type and quantity of drawings and documentation for Purchaser’s
authorization or information as listed on the Supplier Drawing and Data Commitment Form.

23.0 PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT


Supplier shall be solely responsible for providing adequate preparation for shipment.
Preparation shall be subject to inspection and rejection by the Purchaser’s inspectors.
Minimum preparation for shipment shall be as described in the following paragraphs.
 Adequate protection shall be provided against mechanical damage and atmospheric
corrosion in transit and for at least six months of outdoor storage at jobsite prior to
installation.

 Shipping saddles, bracing, supports, and rigging connections shall be provided to prevent
damage during shipment, lifting, or unloading.

 Bearings and seal assemblies shall be fully protected from the entry of moisture and dirt.

 Exposed unpainted surfaces, including bolting, shall be given a heavy coating of rust
inhibiting compound.

 Pumps, drivers, and all furnished auxiliaries shall be shipped fully assembled except as
noted herein. Coupling spacers with bolts and other items, such as minimum flow orifices
which are not part of the pumping unit assembly, shall be separately boxed and securely
attached to the pump.

 Horizontal pumps and drivers shall be mounted on the skid for shipment.

 Vertical pumps along with gearboxes, motors and/or engine drivers shall be shop
mounted, aligned, match marked prior to disassembly for shipment. Vertical pumps,
gearboxes, and their motor drivers may be shipped separately from the skid.

 If necessary to ship other major components separately, Purchaser authorization is


required.

 Separate, loose items and spare parts shall be completely boxed. All pieces of equipment
and spare parts shall be identified by item number and service and marked with
Purchaser’s order number, item number, and weight on a packing list located both inside
and outside of each individual package or container. Supplier is required to send to
Purchaser these packing lists in advance of shipment.

 One complete set of installation, operation, and maintenance instructions shall be packed
in the boxes or crates and shipped with the equipment.

 Supplier shall provide 6 mm thick metal closures for all untapped and flanged openings
and bolt these in place with a minimum of four bolts and full rubber gaskets.

 For shipping purposes, disconnect and plug all tapped openings using solid, long-shank
steel plugs.

 Plug all tapped openings normally open during service using solid, long shank steel plugs
coated with anti-seize compound. Cast iron, brass, plastic and Teflon tape are
unacceptable for plugs. Plug all tapped openings in stainless steel valves, such as
needle valves and gauge valves, with type 316 stainless steel plugs.

 Any items which can be damaged by water shall be securely wrapped in waterproof paper
or plastic before being placed in wooden crates.

 Instruments and valves, including auxiliary systems, shall be securely mounted or


supported to eliminate damage during shipment, storage, operation and maintenance.

24.0 EQUIPMENT TAGGING


Equipment tagging and marking shall conform to the following requirements:
a) Each major piece of equipment having an item number as indicated by the purchase
order and/or data sheet shall have a permanently attached nameplate.
b) Nameplates shall be 316 series stainless steel seal welded to a one piece bracket.
Bracket shall be continuously seal welded to equipment and have a minimum
projection of 50.8 mm (2 inches). Nameplate shall contain the following data, as a
minimum:
 Manufacturer’s Name
 Manufacturer’s model number
 Manufacturer’s serial number
 Equipment tag or item number
 Service (equipment name)
 Purchase order number

c) Nameplate drawing must be submitted and approved prior to Supplier making


nameplate.
d) Miscellaneous parts shall be tagged or marked with the equipment item number for
which they are intended.
e) Equipment containing insulating oils, anti-freeze solutions, or other fluids shall be
prominently tagged at openings to indicate the nature of the contents, shipping and
storage precaution, and an MSDS shall accompany the equipment. An MSDS shall
be provided to purchaser prior to shipment.
f) Instrument and equipment tags shall be impression stamped stainless steel with
4.76 mm (3/16 inch) (minimum) characters and permanently mounted with stainless
steel drive screws or 16 gauge (minimum) wire.
