1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. Scope of Specification
This specification describes the requirements for HVAC air cooled condensing units,
complete with all accessory items as required and described herein.
B. System Description
Air-cooled condensing units shall be factory fabricated and assembled, and consisting of
compressors, condensers, fans, controls and accessories as defined in this specification,
data sheets and drawings. Air-cooled condensing units shall meet shall meet the
commissioning requirements of MQ-SP-H-4701 and this specification.
C. Equipment Noise level Limits
The equipment noise shall meet the criteria set forth in MQ-SP-M-4032 and MQ-SP-H-
4700.

1.2 Definitions

Refer to MQ-SP-H-4701 for HVAC definitions.

3.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE

The following quality assurance items are in addition to the general quality assurance requirements of
specification MQ-SP-H-4701 and the contract documents.

3.1 Manufacturer’s Qualifications

A. Air-cooled condensing units shall be the standard product of an equipment manufacturer


regularly engaged in the production of such units and who issues complete catalog
information on such products.
B. Manufacturer shall have a permanent local representative or designated authorized
service representative in Saudi Arabia.

3.2 Certifications

A. Air-cooled condensing units smaller than 39.5 kW shall be rated in accordance with ARI
210/240.
B. Air-cooled condensing units larger than 39.5 kW shall be rated in accordance with ARI
340/360.

3.3 Testing

Air-cooled condensing unit shall be factory tested for sound power level ratings in accordance
with ARI 270. The equipment SPL shall not exceed the limits as specified in Section1.1 C.

3.4 Design

A. The unit shall be completely weatherproofed and designed, including but not limited to
casing coating if required, for use under job-site outdoors environments.
B. The unit capacity shall be rated at 50oC or higher temperature as required. All the
components (such as bearing, wiring, motor, all electrical accessories, etc.) shall be able
to handle the operation at the temperature specified.
C. Fabricate and label refrigeration system in accordance with ASHRAE 15.
D. Electrical components, devices, and accessories shall be listed and labeled as defined in
NFPA 70, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and marked
for intended use..

4.0 SUBMITTALS

The Contractor providing the equipment, prior to procurement, shall submit for approval the following
product’s information in accordance with submittals’ requirements prescribed in the Contract/Purchase
Order (PO) general conditions. Information shall be SI units..
Attachment 1 of this specification contains equipment schedule. The information listed in that schedule
shall be provided as minimum for review before preliminary acceptance of the equipment.

4.1 Product Data

Product data shall include as a minimum:

A. Manufacturer/Representative names/contact information, equipment model/serial


numbers, shipping/operating weights and date/location of manufacturing. Same data
shall be provided for other major components as compressors, fans and motors if
manufactured by others i.e. original equipment manufacturer (OEM) data.
B. Submittals shall include rated capacities; shipping, installed, and operating weights;
certified dimension drawings, furnished specialties; and accessories for each type of
product indicated.
C. Certified performance data with system operating conditions indicated.
D. Certified unit-sound power ratings.
E. Motor requirements, and electrical characteristics.
F. Motor data sheets in accordance with MQ-SP-E-6022 and MQ-DS-E-6022.

4.2 Shop Drawings

Product shop drawings shall include the following drawings and/or diagrams as a minimum:
A. Wiring diagrams shall clearly indicate all earthing, power, control and signal wiring and
connections. Wiring diagrams shall differentiate between manufacturer installed and
customer installed wiring.
B. Electrical schematic diagrams shall be provided showing all manufacturer and customer
control devices and interlocking
C. Manufacturers’ certified cut sheets indicating unit dimensions, weights, connection
points.

4.3 Installation, Operation and Maintenance Data

For each type of air cooled condensing unit, the following information shall be submitted as a
minimum:
A. Unless otherwise specified, six bound copies of the installation, operation and
maintenance manuals shall be provided. Optionally, electronic copies of the manual may
be provided in a format acceptable to the owner.
B. Operation, installation and maintenance data including operation and installation
manuals.
C. Maintenance data shall include maintenance instructions, instructions for lubrication,
filter replacement, motor and drive replacement, and spare parts lists.
D. The spare parts list shall be tabulated and include for every part the OEM’s model/part
number. Cross sectional views shall be provided showing locations of the spare parts.
E. Maintenance data, product data, shop drawings, schematic and wiring diagrams shall be
included in the operating and maintenance manuals.

4.4 Recommended Spare Parts List

Submit factory recommended spare parts list, for inventory purpose, with price for each part. List
shall be tabulated and include, for every part, the OEM’s model/part number.

5.0 PRODUCT DELIVERY AND HANDLING

5.1 General Requirements

A. Deliver air-cooled condensing units with factory installed shipping skids and lifting lugs;
pack small components in factory fabricated protective containers.
B. Handle air-cooled condensing units carefully to avoid damage to components, enclosures
and finish. Do not install damaged components; replace and return damaged components
to air handling unit Manufacturer.
C. Store air-cooled condensing units in clean, dry place and protect from weather and
construction traffic.
D. Comply with Manufacturer's rigging and installation instructions for unloading air
handling units and moving them to final locations.

6.0 WARRANTY

6.1 General Requirements

A. The equipment described by this specification shall be quoted and sold in full compliance
with the Terms and Conditions of Purchase.
B. The equipment manufacturer shall guarantee the entire unit to be free from defects in
material, design and/or workmanship for a period of twelve (12) months. The warranty
shall commence from the date the unit was commissioned and accepted by the OWNER
(MARAFIQ) for it’s beneficial use or eighteen (18) months from the date of receiving the
equipment at the owner job-site.
C. The serviceable hermetic, semi-hermetic or scroll compressors of condensing units shall
have an extended warranty of five (5) years from end of warranty on package.

7.0 PRODUCTS

7.1 General

A. Provide factory assembled and tested air cooled condensing unit consisting of
compressor, condenser coil, fan(s), motor(s), refrigerant reservoir and operating controls
as specified herein.
B. The unit capacity shall be rated at ambient condition specified in MQ-SP-C-2000.

C. Unit shall provide required capacity after coils have been de-rated due to application of
coating
D. Air-cooled condensing units shall be self-contained and pre-wired units suitable for
outdoor use.
E. The unit shall not utilize a Chloroflurocarbon (CFC) refrigerant,
Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant, or other ozone depleting compounds as
specified in the Montreal Protocol. Refrigerant Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) shall
be provided by the Contractor.

7.2 Unit Casing

A. Unit casing shall be designed for outdoor installation and complete with weatherproof
protection for components and controls. Casing shall be provided with removable panels
for required access to compressors, controls, condenser fans, motors, and drives.
B. Air cooled condensing units 19.5 kW and smaller shall be provided with weep holes for
drainage, mounting holes in the base and have service valves, fittings and gage ports
mounted on the exterior of the casing.
C. Casing shall be constructed of galvanized steel treated and finished with manufacturer’s
factory standard finish unless otherwise specified. Manufacturer’s standard finish shall
meet or exceed the 500 hour continuous salt spray test in accordance with ASTM B117.
D. Unless otherwise specified, unit exterior surfaces shall be painted with a factory standard
baked enamel finish. Refer to MQ-SP-M-4038 and MQ-SP-M-4039 for any additional
painting/coating requirements.
E. Lifting lugs shall be provided to facilitate rigging of units.
F. Control panel door shall be gasketed.
G. All access doors and panels shall have flexible bonding strap or wire for suitable earthing
link.

7.3 Compressor

A. Compressors shall be hermetic or semi-hermetic compressors designed for service with


crankcase sight glass, crankcase heater and back-seating service access valves on suction
and discharge ports, or scroll compressors.
B. Compressor motors shall be capable of continuous operation with +/- 10 percent of rated
voltage without damage.
C. Reciprocating Compressor
1. Capacity control shall be either by cylinder unloading or hot gas bypass
2. Compressor speed shall not exceed 1,750 RPM.

3. Compressor shall be complete with automatically reversible oil pump, operating


oil charge, crankcase heater, and suction and discharge service valves.
4. Each compressor shall have multi-step capacities as specified. Cylinder
unloading may be suction pressure actuated or external solenoid actuated.
5. Compressors shall be mounted on vibration isolators.
D. Scroll Compressors
1. Compressor speed shall not exceed 3,600 RPM.
2. Compressor shall have capacity reduction capability as specified.
3. Compressors shall have centrifugal oil pumps, inlet dirt separator, journal
bearings, oil sight glass, oil charging valve, and internal isolation.

7.4 Condensing Section

A. Coils shall be seamless copper tube, copper fin with separate and independent refrigerant
circuits for each compressor. A liquid accumulator and subcooling circuit and back-
seating liquid line service access valve shall be included.
B. Coils shall be factory tested at 3105 kPa, dehydrated by drawing a vacuum and filled with
a holding charge of nitrogen.
C. Coils shall be coated as specified in Section 7.0.
D. Motor
1. Fan motor shall have weather slinger and be suitable for outdoor use. It shall be
rated at 50oC or higher temperature as required.
2. Fan motors shall be permanently lubricated ball bearing type meeting the
requirements of and MQ-SP-E-6022.
3. A separate motor shall be provided for each fan, and all motors shall be
provided with thermal overload cutouts.
E. Fan shall be vertical discharge, direct drive, propeller type adequately sized to minimize
operating noise and shall be statically and dynamically balanced.
F. Air outlet to be covered by a protective screen.
G. All integral suction lines shall be coated in accordance with section 7.0 and insulated
with 20 mm thick Armaflex type insulation.
H. All components shall be located so as to have adequate access space for service.

7.5 Controls

A. Control components shall meet the requirements of MQ-SP-H-4709.


B. Provide hot gas bypass and controls as required.

C. Unit shall be equipped with low ambient controls such as factory installed damper
assembly, fan speed control or fan cycling control as required for operation to 3 C.
D. Safety controls shall be provided as follows:
1. Manual reset, high pressure cutout switches.
2. Automatic reset, low pressure cutout switches.
3. Low oil pressure cutout switch.
4. Motor winding high temperature cutout switch.
5. 3-leg, compressor overload protection.
E. Magnetic contactors for compressor and condenser fan motors shall be provided.
F. Automatic, non-recycling pump down.
G. Unit shall be provided with an anti-short cycling relay to prevent excessive compressor
cycling.
H. Provide all necessary mechanical and control devices for unit operating at ambient
temperature (from 0° C to 50° C, or higher temperature as specified).
I. The items shall be furnished, mounted, wired and completely installed by the
manufacturer. Identification shall be indicated on or adjacent to device with permanent
tag or plate.
J. All controls shall be mounted in the condensing unit and shall be the manufacturer's
standard. Control panel shall be a weather and dust tight enclosure.

7.6 Wiring for air cooled condensing units:

A. All wiring shall be rated at 50oC or higher temperature as required.


B. Wiring shall be in flexible or rigid aluminum(copper-free)conduit.
C. All wires, terminals, relays and other devices shall be marked appropriately to correspond
with wiring diagrams and schematics.
D. No splices shall be allowed in any wiring.

7.7 Electrical

A. All electrical motors and associated control devices, shall be powered from one single
customer furnished supply (as shown on the equipment data sheet). Motors and heaters
shall each be provided with individual overcurrent and overload protective devices and
auxiliary control equipment, as applicable.
B. Unit shall be provided with a non-fused disconnect switch, factory wired and mounted,
for single point external electrical power connection.

C. Unless a lower rating is specifically allowed elsewhere in the MARAFIQ Project


Specifications, electrical enclosures located indoors in air conditioned areas shall be
NEMA 3(IP 44) or greater, electrical enclosures located indoors in a non-air conditioned
areas shall be NEMA 3S (IP 54) or greater, and electrical enclosures located in outdoor
areas shall be NEMA 4X (IP 65) or greater.
D. All electrical apparatus shall be protected against the harmful effects of short-circuits and
earth faults.
E. All electrical components shall be UL or FM Listed

7.8 Grounding

Two external ground termination points shall be provided to facilitate Customer connection of the
external grounding system to the equipment. All electrical equipment on or within the packaged
unit shall be grounded from these grounding points.

8.0 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Air cooled condensing unit fan motors and all other electrical and instrumentation equipment in hazardous
areas shall be suitable for installation in the hazardous area specified on the data sheet and shall be of spark
resistant construction per AMCA 99.

9.0 COATINGS

Air-cooled condensing unit coils shall be coated with Heresite P-413 pure phenolic thermosetting resinous
coating. Coating thickness shall be 0.05 mm DFT. Coil and surface preparation and application of coating
shall be in accordance with coating and coil manufacturer’s written instructions.

10.0 CAPACITY AND UNIT CHARACTERISTICS

10.1 General

A. Provide the applicable information listed in Attachment 1 for each air cooled condensing
unit.
B. Outdoor units shall be rated at 50º C, or higher temperature as required. All mechanical
and electrical components (such as bearings, wiring, etc.) shall be able to operate in under
the project environmental conditions.

11.0 PROTECTION OF APPARATUS

11.1 General
A. Equipment and accessories shall be delivered with protective crating and coverings as
recommended by the equipment manufacturer.
B. Equipment and accessories shall be stored to prevent damage and protect them from
weather, dirt, fumes, water and construction debris.

C. Equipment and accessories shall be handled in accordance with manufacturers written


rigging and installation instructions for unloading, transporting and setting in final
location.

12.0 TESTING

In addition to testing specified above, all unit electrical devices shall be energized as components to ensure
operation integrity prior to the unit shipment. Replacement of nonfunctioning items shall be conducted
with all reasonable speed and the quality assurance engineer shall certify that all such changes have in fact
been undertaken.

13.0 IDENTIFICATION AND NUMBERING

Air cooled condensing units shall be tagged with a 40 mm x 125 mm x 1.5 mm 304 stainless steel plate
with engraved identification numbers (Owner’s Equipment Number, Manufacturer Name, Model No.,
Serial No., Electric Data, and P.O. Number.) permanently riveted to the frame in a conspicuous location.
