1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. Scope of Specification

1. This specification prescribes the requirements for purchase of Bolts, Nuts, and Gaskets.

2. This specification is a supplement to the Item Description shown in the Bills of Material.

B. Related Specifications

Work in this specification shall be coordinated with Marafiq Engineering Specifications:

 MQ-SP-P-5022: Piping Traceability and Certification.

 MQ-SP-M-4013:General Specification for Positive Material Identification (PMI)

C. Supplied by Supplier

1. Supply of Material

a. Supplier's scope shall include the supply of material as specified in the PO

(Purchase Order) and written clarifications thereto, modifications necessary to
meet the requirements of the Item Description, and additional engineering notes in
the PO, examination and testing, preparation of the material for shipment, suitable
packaging, and Manufacturer's warranty.

b. All bolts, nuts and gaskets shall be clearly marked with country of origin in
accordance with applicable government regulations. In addition, materials shall be
produced by manufacturers specifically listed in the Marafiq Approved Vendors
List (AVL). Any materials deviating from these requirements must have prior
written authorization or shall be subject to rejection or additional verification or
testing at Seller's expense.

2. Equivalent Manufacturers

Items specified or referenced by Manufacturer and figure number are not intended to
exclude equal items offered by other Manufacturers. Products made by reputable
Manufacturers and of comparable type, quality, and characteristics may be submitted for
evaluation.

3. Refurbished Material

Products furnished shall be original Manufacturer's production. Reconditioned or new

surplus materials shall not be furnished without prior written authorization.

4. Approved Manufacturer

a. The approved manufacturer, shown below the Item Description on the PO, is the
manufacturer and figure number accepted by Marafiq. No other manufacturer may
be furnished other than that shown, unless it is approved by Marafiq Engineering

D. Terminology

1. Authorized or Authorization: Authorized or authorization given by Marafiq Engineering.

2. Refurbishment: The furnishing of products that are not new and not the original
Manufacturer's production.

The publications listed below form part of this specification. Each publication forming part of this
specification shall be the latest revision and addendum in effect on the date this specification is issued
for construction unless noted otherwise. Except as modified by the requirements specified herein or the
details of the drawings, Work included in this specification shall conform to the applicable provisions

F. Precedence of Requirements

Conflicts in technical requirements shall be resolved in the following order of precedence:

1. Technical requirements specified in the RFQ or PO, as applicable, and identified as

additional technical requirements or engineering notes.

2. The Item Description as shown on the Bills of Material. If the item description differs
from or is in conflict with any requirements of this specification, the more stringent
requirement shall govern.

3. The requirements of this specification.

4. The requirements of referenced codes or standards (such as ASME B16.5).

1.3 System Description

Dimensions and tolerances for bolts, heads, and nuts shall be in accordance with ASME B18.2.1
and ASME B18.2.2.

B. Gaskets

Gasket design and tolerances for flanged piping joints shall be in accordance with the following
standards:

Gasket Type Standards

Compressed, nonasbestos 1.5 mm (1/16 of an inch) thick; flat ring
shape; dimensions per ASME B16.21.
Double Jacketed ASME B16.20 for corrugated gaskets.
Spiral Wound and Ring Joint ASME B16.20.

1.4 Submittals

A. Certification of Compliance

Supplier shall furnish Certification of Compliance to all requirements of the Purchase Order as
required by the Supplier Drawing & Data Commitment Form (attached to PO). The certification
shall include Marafiq PO number, Item Code Numbers, name and address of supplier and shall
be certified by the Supplier’s Q.A. Manager or authorized agent.

B. ASME Materials

ASTM materials may be substituted for materials specified as ASME, provided that the ASME
specification is indicated (below the title) to be identical with the corresponding ASTM
specification for the grade, class, or type produced. The manufacturer shall state the dual
compliance on the Certification of Compliance. ASTM specification material substitutions shall
be submitted for authorization before administration of the PO.

C. Manufacturer Test Reports (MTR)

A complete MTR (Manufacturer Test Report) showing results of all chemistry and physical
tests shall be available for impact tested steels, chrome steel, stainless steel, and nickel alloy
Bolts. The MTR shall include, as a minimum, name of supplier, name of prime material
manufacturer and plant location, Marafiq PO number, Item Code Number, material
specification, grade and class, actual test results of chemical analysis and mechanical properties
and certified by Quality Control Manager or representative. MTR’s shall be furnished to buyer
only as required by the Supplier Drawing & Data Commitment Form (attached to PO)

1.5 Quality Assurance

A. General

Bolts, nuts, and gaskets used in ASME Code piping shall be in accordance with the criteria in
the applicable piping specification.

B. Inspection Authority

Examination or tests may be reviewed or witnessed by Marafiq or its authorized agent at

Supplier’s or Manufacturer’s facility.

1. A general inspection of the facility for quality control procedures may be made as
selected by the Inspector.

2. A visual inspection of the quality and appearance of the product may be made as selected
by Marafiq's Inspector.

3. Bolts, nuts, or the materials thereof that indicate injurious defects, improper manufacture,
or that are not in accordance with the requirements of this specification shall be subject to
rejection by Marafiq's Inspector, even if such conditions are discovered after acceptance
at the manufacturer's works. Rejected bolts and nuts shall be replaced by Seller at Seller's
expense.

C. Bolt Torques

Gasket manufacturers shall recommend the bolt torque needed to ensure a sufficient seal. The
gasket manufacturer will need to know the bolt material, coatings if any, lubricants and bolt
thread type to recommend an accurate bolt torque,

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.1 Materials

A. Bolts and Nuts

Bolt and nut materials shall be as specified in the Item Description.

B. Gaskets

1. Gasket materials shall contain no asbestos.

2. Gasket material shall be as specified in the Item Description.

2.2 Fabrication And Manufacture

A. Bolt and Nuts

1. In accordance with ASME B16.5, the length of bolts shall be measured from the under
surface of the head to the extreme point of the bolt. Stud bolt lengths shall be measured
between the extreme effective threads, exclusive of end points. Length tolerances shall be
as specified in ASME B16.5, Annex F, Table F2, except that positive tolerances of the
same values shall also apply.

2. Austenitic stainless steel bolts and nuts shall be furnished in the solution heat treated
condition.

3. Strain hardening shall be furnished only when specified in the Item Description.

4. Threads shall be smooth and may be machined, ground, or rolled. Threading shall be in
accordance with ASME B1.1, Class 2A for bolts, and Class 2B for nuts. The coarse
thread series for sizes 1 inch and smaller and the 8 pitch (8UN) thread series for sizes
above 1 inch shall be used.

5. Studs and stud bolts shall be threaded full length and ends chamfered.

B. Gaskets

1. Compressed non-asbestos gaskets shall contain an anti-stick release agent or shall be

graphited on both sides and have a minimum tensile strength across the grain of 1.38
MPa (20 psi).

2. Spiral Wound Gaskets

a. The metal windings shall be type 304 stainless steel unless other materials are
specified in the Item Description.

b. The inner ring of the gasket shall be of a material that has corrosion resistant
properties equivalent to or better than the metal windings.

c. The centering ring may be carbon steel that is painted, metal plated or coated to
inhibit atmospheric corrosion.

2.3 Inspection And Tests

A. Examination

1. Bolts shall be subjected to Positive Material Identification (PMI) in accordance with

Marafiq Specification MQ-SP-M-4013.

2. Other Examination is required only as specified in the Item Purchase Description or the
Purchase Order.

3. Surfaces to be examined shall be clean and free from surface conditions that may mask
unacceptable conditions.

4. Personnel performing or evaluating examinations other than visual examination and

hardness testing shall be qualified in accordance with the ASNT SNT-TC-1A.

2.4 Identification And Tagging

A. Marking shall be in accordance with the respective standards to which the items are
manufactured unless otherwise specified in the Item Description.

B. In addition to being marked with the address, shipping container shall be marked with Buyer's
complete order number, contract number, and material, size, and quantity of all items therein.

2.5 Preparation For Shipment

A. The finished product shall be packed in suitable containers for adequate protection of the
threads during shipment.

B. Bolts and nuts shall be cleaned and greased or oiled before shipment, and nuts shall be shipped
assembled on the bolts.

C. Austenitic stainless steel bolting and gasket materials shall be protected from chloride attack
such as might occur from exposure to salt water spray or atmosphere during shipment, cleaning,
fabrication, testing, and storage. Protection shall also be provided when shipping by truck in
areas where road salt is used. Consideration shall be given to enclosing or wrapping in a vapor
proof barrier material.
