1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This Section covers precast architectural concrete construction, including product design
for proprietary items when shown on the Contract Drawings, manufacture, transportation,
storage, erection, and other related items required to complete all precast architectural
concrete work.

1.2 References

The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of quality for
materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these standards and the text
of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever applicable. In
case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and processes conforming
to one group of codes and standards.

1.3 Definitions

A. Architectural Precast Concrete: A precast concrete that will be permanently exposed to


view and therefore requires special care in selecting of the concrete materials, forming,
placing, and finishing to obtain the desired architectural appearance.

B. Panel: A concrete member usually precast, rectangular in shape and relatively thin with
respect to other dimensions.

C. Precast Concrete: Concrete cast elsewhere than its final position.

CONCRETE

D. Sandwich Panel: A precast panel consisting of two layers of concrete separated by a non-
structural insulating core.

E. Solid Panel: A panel usually of constant thickness.

F. Non-Proprietary Precast Concrete: Units shown on the Contract Drawings, completely


configured, reinforced and detailed with all connections, finishes and related work
specified (No additional engineering detail is required from the Contractor).

G. Proprietary Precast Concrete: Units referenced on the Contract Drawings by their “Trade
Name” or equal, which are configured geometrically with limiting dimensions but not
designed and detailed structurally (This call-out requires that the Contractor or the
Supplier shall complete the design work and submit calculation and fully detailed Shop
Drawings for review and approval by Marafiq).

1.4 Design Requirements

A. Design requirements shall be in accordance with the design requirements of MQ-SP-S-


2319, Precast Structural Concrete.

1.5 Submittals

The Contractor shall submit to Marafiq the following items for review and approval before
commencing work:

A. Sample

1. One sample of each type of precast unit representative of finished exposed face
showing typical range of color and texture, prepared as follows:

- Sample size shall be approximately 600 x 600 mm with an approximate


thickness which is the representative of each of the proposed finished products.

2. The Marafiq’s review of samples will be for color, texture, finishes, and general
condition. Compliance with all additional requirements is the responsibility of the
Contractor and subject at all times to further approval by Marafiq.

3. Manufacture of precast units shall not commence prior to the review and approval by
Marafiq of the sample submitted.

B. Shop Drawings

1. Shop Drawings for proprietary precast concrete items shall contain the following
information:

- Concrete outlines, elevations, sections and all relevant dimensions to completely


define each precast concrete unit. Weight of each unit shall be indicated as
necessary.

- Concrete finishes.

- Reinforcing, joint and connection details.

- Lifting and erection inserts.

- Location and details of hardware attached to structure.

- Other items, such as insulation cast into precast concrete panels.

- Handling procedures.

- Erection plan, with the necessary bracing that will be required during erection.

- Relationship to adjacent elements.

- The location of units shall be identified on the Shop Drawings with same
identification mark as the mark placed on each unit.

- Complete Bill of Materials.

2. Shop Drawings for non-proprietary precast concrete items shall contain the following
information:

- Handling procedures.

- Erection plan with the necessary bracing that will be required during erection.

- Complete Bill of Materials for each unit.

- Transportation and storage provisions.

- The location of units shall be identified on the drawings with same identification
mark as the mark placed on each unit.

C. Manufacturer’s Data

1. Manufacturer’s specifications and instructions for all manufactured materials and


products. Certifications and laboratory test reports.

2. Erection procedure, sequence of erection, and required handling equipment.

D. Certificates and Test Report

1. Certifications from the manufacturer and/or supplier that all items delivered to the
work-site meet all material and plant quality control test requirements of this
Specification.

1. Structural design calculations for supplier’s proprietary type units prior to any
production run.

F. Mortar and Grout

1. Design mix for each type of mortar and grout to be used in the work complete with
test reports from an approved materials laboratory.

G. Maintenance Data

1. Indicating surface cleaning instructions

1.6 Mock-Up

A. After standard samples are accepted by Marafiq for color and texture, the Contractor shall
provide sample panels, two of each type production units required showing the full range
of finishes, and that they meet all specified requirements. One of each type shall be
located at the place of manufacture, and the other at the work site.

B. The approved mock-up panels shall be used as the standard of quality for acceptance of
precast concrete work when reviewed by Marafiq and by the Contractor’s Quality Control
Supervisor.

1. The Panels used in mock-ups may be incorporated into the permanent work after all
reviews by Marafiq are completed.

1.7 Quality Control

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and propose
programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified quality to the
approval of Marafiq.

B. Precast unit manufacturer shall institute quality control procedures for the manufacture,
inspection, and testing of precast units in compliance with recommendations of PCI
MNL-117.

C. The Contractor shall employ an independent testing or consulting firm to evaluate precast
manufacturer’s quality control, testing of materials and testing methods.

D. The precast manufacturer shall allow the Contractor’s independent testing or consulting
firm access to the parts of the manufacturer’s works that concern the manufacture of the
precast units. The manufacturer shall provide the inspector with reasonable facilities to
check that the material being furnished is in accordance with the specification.

E. Quality Assurance

1. Work of this Specification shall be performed in accordance with requirements of


PCI MNL-117, PCI MNL-120, PCI MNL-122, PCI MNL-123, PCI MNL-135, ACI
318, and of this Specification.

- Maintain one copy of the documents on Project site.

2. Fabricator’s Qualifications

- Company specializing in manufacturing products specified in this Specification,


shall have at least 3 years of documented experience.

3. Precast concrete members shall be designed under the direct supervision of


Professional Structural Engineer experienced in design of precast concrete.

1.8 Health and Safety Considerations

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

- Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Contractor

- Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by Marafiq.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be employed
throughout.

1.9 Job Conditions

A. Job conditions shall be in accordance with the job conditions requirements of MQ-SP-S-
2319, Precast Structural Concrete.

1.10 Delivery, Handling and Storage

A. Delivery, handling and storage shall be in accordance the requirements of MQ-SP-S-


2319, Precast Structural Concrete.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.1 General

A. All goods and products covered by these specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured
out-of-Kingdom must be approved by Marafiq.

CONCRETE

Precast architectural concrete materials shall comply with the following:

A. Concrete

1. Portland Cement

- Portland cement shall conform to the requirements of Marafiq Specification,


MQ-SP-2302, Plain and Reinforced Concrete.

2. Classes of Concrete

- Classes of concrete shall be as shown on the Contract Drawings.

3. Coloring Agent

- Coloring agents shall conform to ASTM C979, containing water repellant


properties to protect against efflorescence and must be harmless to concrete
strength.

4. Aggregates

- Exposed Coarse Aggregate

 Hard durable aggregate carefully graded from coarse to fine in


proportions required to match approved samples.

 Eliminate off color material from exposed aggregate.

- Fine Aggregate for Matrix of Facing Mix

 Test sand for color value in accordance with ASTM C40. Sand
producing darker than specified color standard is unacceptable.

- Aggregate for Back-Up Mix

 Aggregate for back-up mix shall conform to ASTM C33, limit


gradation as required to produce specified quality of concrete.

 Fine and coarse aggregate, other than lightweight.

- Lightweight Coarse Aggregate

 Lightweight coarse aggregate shall conform to ASTM C330, free from


expanded clay.

5. Air-Entraining Admixture

- Air-entraining Admixture shall conform to ASTM C260.

6. Chemical Admixture

- Chemical admixture shall conform to ASTM C494.

7. Mixing Water

- Mixing water shall be potable, free of substances that are detrimental to concrete,
and metal.

B. Reinforcement

1. All steel reinforcement shall comply with the material requirements of Marafiq
Specifications MQ-SP-2302, Plain and Reinforced Concrete and MQ-SP-S-2318,
Post-Tensioned Concrete.

C. Embedment and Anchorage Devices

1. All materials shall comply with the requirements of Marafiq Specifications, MQ-SP-
2302, Plain and Reinforced Concrete and MQ-SP-S-2305, Fabrication and
Installation of Anchor Bolts.

D. Grout

1. Premixed grout shall be non-shrink and non-metallic as specified in Marafiq


Specification, MQ-SP-2302, Plain and Reinforced Concrete.

E. Insulation

1. All insulation materials shall comply with the requirements of Marafiq Specification,
MQ-SP-A-2725, Building Insulation. Density and U-value shall be as specified on
the Contract Drawings.

F. Joint Sealants

1. All sealant materials shall comply with the requirements of Marafiq Specification,
MQ-SP-A-2736 Joint Sealant.

G. Epoxy Adhesive

1. Epoxy adhesive shall be a proprietary coating, as presently used by precast unit


manufacturer, or shall conform to ASTM C881.

H. Bearing Pad

1. Bearing pads shall be in compliance with bearing pad requirements of MQ-SP-S-


2319, Precast Structural Concrete.

2.3 Fabrication

CONCRETE

1. Procedures shall be in general compliance with PCI MNL-117 and PCI MNL-135, as
incorporated into the reviewed Contractor’s Quality Control submittal.

B. Forms and Molds

1. Molds shall be rigid and shall be constructed from materials that will result in
uniformly finished products that meet the specified standard tolerances.

C. Form Liners

1. Form liners shall be used in accordance with manufacturer’s instruction.

D. Embedments

1. Required connection devices, plates, angles inserts, bolt and accessories shall be
fabricated to allow units to be securely held in place at final installation and adjusted
prior to permanent bolting in place.

E. Window Units

1. Unless otherwise shown on the Contract Drawings, window units shall be installed in
place while fabricating precast units. Protect assembly from damage.

F. Insulation

1. Insulation, when required, shall be selected and used as recommended by the


Contractor’s supplier and approved by Marafiq.

G. Flashing Reglets

1. Flashing reglets shall be placed continuous and straight.

H. Hoisting Devices

1. Hoisting devices shall be located that it can be cut off and sealed weather-tight after
units are erected.

I. Inspection of Embedments

1. Reinforcing steel, anchors inserts, plates, angles and other cast-in items shall be
properly located, secured and inspected prior to placement of concrete in the forms.

J. Reinforcement

1. Unless otherwise shown on the Contract Drawings, requirements for reinforcement


shall be in accordance with Marafiq Specification, MQ-SP-2302, Plain and
Reinforced Concrete.

1. The manufacturer shall provide openings as shown on the Shop Drawings.

L. Placement and Consolidation

1. Concrete shall be subject to Marafiq’s review, in accordance with the manufacturer’s


approved procedure ensuring proper consolidation, elimination of unintentional cold
joints and to minimize entrapped air on vertical surfaces.

M. Curing

1. The manufacturer’s recommended curing procedure upon being approved by Marafiq


shall not be changed after production starts. All coordinating units to be cured
identically to uniformly develop concrete quality and minimize appearance
blemishes, such as non-uniformity and staining, and to avoid surface cracking.

- The curing methods and duration shall meet the curing requirements of Marafiq
Specification, MQ-SP-2302, Plain and Reinforced Concrete.

N. Finishes

1. Exposed face of the precast unit shall match the approved sample.

O. Removal of Precast Units

1. Units shall not be removed from the casting bed until the concrete has attained its 28-
day design compressive strength or its approved calculated compressive strength to
enable to resist the maximum stresses due to stripping and handling.

P. Panel Identification Mark

1. Each precast unit shall be marked to correspond to the identification mark on the
Shop Drawings for unit location.

Q. Plant Inspection

1. As soon as possible, following the removal of forms, precast units shall be inspected,
and all non-structural defects shall be corrected in the manner previously reviewed
and approved by Marafiq. Units with structural defects shall not be accepted for use
in the work.

R. Shipment of Precast Units

1. Units shall not be shipped until the concrete has attained 100% of the strength
specified for the class of concrete concerned and all shop inspections and approval
are completed.

A. Finishes shall be in accordance with the finishes requirements of MQ-SP-S-2319, Precast


Structural Concrete.

2.5 Fabrication Tolerances

A. Fabrication tolerances shall conform to the following:

1. Maximum Variation from Nominal Face Dimensions: ± 2.4 mm


.
2. Maximum Variation from Square or Designated Skew: ± 1 mm/m.

3. Maximum Variation from Thickness: ± 3 mm.

4. Maximum Misalignment of Anchors, Inserts, Openings: ± 3 mm.

5. Maximum Bowing of Members: ± length/360.

2.6 Durability of Concrete

A. Requirements for the durability of precast units shall be in accordance with Marafiq
Specification, MQ-SP-S-2302, Plain and Reinforced Concrete.

2.7 Acceptance

A. The Contractor’s Quality Control Supervisor shall inspect all precast units prior to
shipping to the Work-site in accordance with established procedures in the reviewed
Quality Control Program.

B. Marafiq may, at their option, inspect the precast units at the plant; however, final
acceptance by Marafiq shall only be made after all units are in-place at the Work-site.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.1 Inspection

A. Inspection shall be in accordance with Inspection requirements of MQ-SP-S-2319,


Precast Structural Concrete.

3.2 Erection

A. Erection shall be in accordance with the erection requirements of MQ-SP-S-2319, Precast


Structural Concrete.

3.3 Erection Tolerances

A. Erection tolerances shall be in accordance with the erection tolerances of MQ-SP-S-2319,


Precast Structural Concrete.

3.4 Field Cutting of Openings

A. On thin section, 150 mm round or square or larger openings shall be fabricated in the
factory.

B. The Contractor shall locate and field drill or cut smaller openings where no contact is
made with reinforcement after precast products have been erected.

C. The Contractor shall obtain written approval from Marafiq before drilling or cutting.

3.5 Replacement and Repair

A. Replacement

1. The Contractor shall remove and replace precast concrete work which is damaged,
cracked, broken, stained, improperly fabricated, or otherwise defective.

B. Repair

1. The Contractor or manufacturer shall submit repair procedures, in accordance with


the repair of concrete defects requirements of Marafiq Specification, MQ-SP-2302,
Plain and Reinforced Concrete, to the Marafiq for approval prior to proceeding with
the repair.

2. Any major job-site and fabrication shop repair shall be inspected and approved by
Marafiq prior to the repair.

3. Precast elements having minor defects not affecting serviceability or appearance may
be repaired when approved by Marafiq.

4. The Contractor shall repair the work sound, permanent, flush with adjacent surfaces,
and of color and texture matching existing surface.

5. The repair shall not show line of demarcation between original and patched surfaces.

3.6 Cleaning

A. After erection is completed, the Contractor shall clean precast elements using materials,
equipment, and methods recommended by the manufacturer of precast architectural
concrete.

B. Use of acid solution to clean precast units shall be used only to clean those stains
remaining after more conservative methods have been tried unsuccessfully. Acid solution
to be used shall be reviewed by Marafiq prior to using. Extreme care shall be used to
prevent damage to precast concrete surfaces and to adjacent materials.
