2.04 LUMINAIRE CONTROL

A. Switching of Luminaires

1. Switching is influenced by many factors such as distance of luminaires from

panelboards, their positioning, possible need for multipoint switching, safety
and security requirements.

2. Switching of Indoor Lighting

a) Individual Luminaires or group of Luminaires shall be controlled by

means of snap action toggle switches subject to the limitations on the
switch ratings. Alternatively, large blocks of lighting may be controlled
manually or automatically from the lighting panelboard. If the panelboard
is easily accessible, the circuit protective devices such as miniature
circuit breakers may be used for switching purposes. Otherwise a
contactor must be provided at the panelboard, operated via remote
pushbutton or control switch.

3. Switching of Incandescent Lighting

a) The cold resistance of tungsten element of incandescent lamp is lesser

than that at the normal operating temperature. This results into
excessive switching current. Therefore direct control switches and
switching contacts used on incandescent lighting circuits shall have
continuous current rating of at least 1.5 times the steady state current of
lighting load.

4. Switching of Fluorescent Lighting

a) Switching of fluorescent lighting draws high in rush current during

starting. Therefore direct control switches and switching contacts used
on fluorescent lighting circuits shall have continuous current rating of at
least 2 times the steady state current of lighting load.

5. Switching by Dimmer Switches

a) The dimmer switches used for controlling light levels shall be of solid-
state design incorporating triac. The dimmer switch shall be wall-
mounted type with “OFF” position. The switch shall:
1) Raise or lower the light level from completely off at extreme
counter-clockwise rotation to full intensity.
2) Withstand in rush current during switching on of the lamp.

6. Switching by Occupancy Sensors

Rev 0
13 of 20 Contract No:
SECTION 16510
INTERIOR LUMINAIRES

a) Principle of operation of occupancy sensor shall be on the basis of

passive infrared energy or active ultrasonic energy response or a
combination of both, and be of commercial quality only.

b) Switch format to be either a wall-mounted type for the replacement of

conventional wall switches, or a ceiling mounted version. Switch
contacts to be suitable for application on incandescent, fluorescent and
HID lighting systems. Switching shall be via making or breaking of
mechanical contacts.

c) Sensor switches shall have “ON,” “OFF” and “AUTOMATIC” selector

modes.

d) Sensor switches can have an optional ambient light sensing feature with
an adjustment range to result in a lighting system not being turned "ON"
during occupancy with generous daylight contribution.

e) An adjustable "ON" time feature shall be provided with a minimum

continuous range of 1 to 15 minutes. Occupancy "scan" frequency shall
be at least once every 2 seconds, with automatic timing function reset
and a LED indicator to show activity detection.

f) All sensors shall have a sensitivity adjustment feature to "tune in" for
proper operation for a variation of room or area geometrics. This
measure accepts the use of 2 or more sensor switches suitably
interconnected as a system for situations such as highly irregular areas,
partitioned workstation areas, very large areas, etc.

g) Occupancy sensor layout and arrangement to be in accordance with

individual manufacturer's recommendations. All necessary adjustments
shall be suitably identified on the sensor for convenience, without the
necessity of referring to an instruction manual.

h) The sensor switch shall be provided with suitable means to prevent

condensation in it.

i) It is important that the sensor have adequate in rush current capability

for the subjected application, particularly electronic ballasts.

2.05 INDUSTRIAL BUILDING LIGHTING

A. These buildings are classified as “High Bay” and “Low Bay” areas depending upon
height of the ceiling.

1. High Bay Areas

a) High Intensity Discharge (H.I.D) lamps shall be used to illuminate high

bay areas. This reduces the number of lighting fixture. The glare risk is
reduced in high bay areas due to mounting of luminaires at high level as
they fall outside the range of normal vision. The luminaires shall be
positioned so as to avoid interference with the movement of overhead
cranes.

Rev 0
14 of 20 Contract No:
SECTION 16510
INTERIOR LUMINAIRES

2. Low Bay Areas

a) Luminaires used for illumination of low bay areas shall be selected

carefully to avoid glare. Suitable light source includes fluorescent or
H. I. D. luminaires.

3. Installation of limited number of incandescent lighting fixture in low bay areas

and quartz lamp in high bay areas shall be considered for critical areas where
re-strike time associated with H.I.D fixture following a power disturbance may
have a detrimental impact on the safety of operation and maintenance
personnel.

2.06 COMMERCIAL BUILDING LIGHTING

A. Mostly incandescent and fluorescent luminaires shall be used for indoor illumination
of commercial buildings. These areas require both general and specific task lighting.

1. Lighting in Offices

a) Office lighting shall be as per IESNA RP-1.

b) Lighting for offices containing visual display terminals shall be as per

IESNA RP-24.

c) Lighting Luminaires for offices shall be controlled by manual switches

located at the entrance to every room, or as shown on the Contract
Drawings/Documents.

2. Task Lighting

a) Incandescent spot fixture with dimmers to provide variable illumination

of up to 1000 W shall be used for task lighting.

2.07 LIGHTING CALCULATION

A. The most effective method for calculating illumination level for large indoor areas is
the Lumen Method. This method is frequently used as it gives uniform distribution of
light over large areas using any type of luminaires.

B. The mathematical equation used in Lumen Method for calculating no. of luminaires to
obtain desired level of illumination is as follows:

1. N = ( L x A ) / ( LL x CU x LLD x LDD ), where:

a) N = No. of Luminaires required

b) L = Illumination level required in Lux

c) A = Area in m²

d) LL = Initial lamp lumens per Luminaire

Rev 0
15 of 20 Contract No:
SECTION 16510
INTERIOR LUMINAIRES

e) CU = Coefficient of utilization

f) LLD = Lamp lumen depreciation

g) LDD = Luminaire dirt depreciation

2. In most lighting design, the required maintained Lux intensity will be a known
quantity. It can be obtained from standard tables. Most frequently used
illumination levels are listed in Table 2A.

3. Initial lamp lumen for specified luminaire can be obtained from manufacturer’s
catalogs.

4. Coefficient of Utilization takes into consideration the efficiency and distribution

of the luminaire, its mounting height, the room proportions, and the reflectance
of the walls, ceilings and floor. Its value shall be selected from manufacturer’s
data for specified luminaires.

5. The output of lamp depreciates during service mainly due to loss of lumens
resulting from aging of luminaires. It also decreases due to accumulation of
dust, dirt and insects as well as chemical changes in reflecting surfaces.
