PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. The Work of this Section covers storm drainage piping and specialties within
buildings.

1.02 SECTION INCLUDES

1.03 SCOPE OF WORK

A. Furnishing, installation, testing and bringing systems into full satisfactory operational
conditions of the storm drainage piping.

B. The Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment required to
make the work complete and ready.

C. The Contractor shall provide all materials required for testing.

D. This Section shall be read in conjunction with SECTIONS 15051 and 15055.

1.05 REFERENCES

A. The referred codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.

B. The latest revision of the referred codes and standards shall be used wherever
applicable. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and
processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.

I. IPC International Plumbing Code

1.06 SUBMITTALS

A. The Contractor shall submit to the Royal Commission, under the provisions of
SECTION 01330, the following items for review and approval before commencing
Work:

1. The Contractor shall submit all relevant manufacturers’ literature for pipes,
fittings, couplings, accessories, roof drains and relief drains.

1.07 QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality to the approval of the Royal Commission in accordance with
SECTION 01450.

1.08 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

A. All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full


accordance with the respective health and safety requirements established by the
following:

1. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

a) Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.

2. Royal Commission Regulations

a) Standards, Contractual Conditions, and Health and Safety Systems.

3. Contractor

a) Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by the Royal


Commission.

B. In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be
employed throughout.

1.09 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. The Contractor shall not install underground piping when bedding is wet.

B. Allow only rainwater run-off in the storm drain system.

1.10 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

A. The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in
accordance with SECTIONS 01650 and 01660.

B. Refer to Product Handling of SECTIONS 15055 and 15095.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 GENERAL

A. All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when
available, from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products
manufactured out-of-Kingdom shall be approved by the Royal Commission.

2.02 PIPE AND FITTINGS

A. Under Ground Storm Water Piping (Buried within 1500 mm of Building)

1. PE Pipe

a) ASTM D3035, for 315 kPa (45 psig) pressure rating or AWWA C901.
1) Fittings: AWWA C901 molded or fabricated.
2) Joints: Compression.

2. GFRP Pipe

a) ISO 7370.
1) Fittings: GFRP.
2) Joints: Solvent cemented socket and spigot joints or flanged
joints.

3. PVC Pipe

a) ASTM D2665 or D3034.


1) Fittings: PVC.
2) Joints: Solvent welded, with ASTM D2564 solvent cement.

4. PVC Pipe

a) ASTM D2665 or D3034.


1) Fittings: PVC.
2) Joints: Push-on, using ASTM F477 elastomeric gaskets.

B. Above Ground Storm Water Piping

1. Cast Iron Pipe

a) ASTM A74 service weight.


1) Fittings: Cast iron.
2) Joint Seals: ASTM C564 neoprene gaskets.

2. Cast Iron Pipe

a) CISPI 301, hubless, service weight.


1) Fittings: Cast iron.
2) Joints: neoprene gasket and stainless steel clamp and shield
assemblies.

3. PVC Pipe

a) ASTM D2665 or D3034.


1) Fittings: PVC.
2) Joints: Solvent welded, with ASTM D2564 solvent cement.

4. Copper Tube

a) ASTM B306, DWV.


1) Fittings: ASME B16.29, wrought copper, or ASME B16.32
2) Joints: ASTM B32, alloy Sn50 solder.

C. General

1. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic pipe installations shall be limited to those


structures where combustible construction is allowed.

2. PVC plastic pipe may be used for above ground when piping is enclosed in
1 hour fire rated pipe chase.

3. Pipe, fittings, gaskets and couplings shall be from same manufacturer,


whenever possible.

4. PVC Plastic pipe shall not penetrate fire walls.

2.03 PLUMBING PRODUCTS

A. Roof Drains

1. General

a) Roof drains shall comply with ANSI A112.21.2.

b) Proper roof drain selection shall be based on:


1) Individual roof type/construction.
2) Location of drains.

c) Size, quantities and placement shall be as per Contract Drawings.

d) General selection guide, unless otherwise noted:


1) Use 75 to 150 mm diameter type for small roof areas and light
rainfall region.

2) Use 150 to 300 mm diameter type for large or small roof areas
and heavy rainfall region.

e) Generally, roof drain type shall be dome type, unless otherwise noted.

f) Type of pipe connection shall be inside gasket, no-hub or manufacturer


specified.

2. Roof drains shall comprise of the following:

a) Manufacturer coated cast iron body (sump).

b) Membrane flashing clamp/combined gravel guard.

c) Manufacturer coated cast iron dome strainer.

d) Options
1) Adjustable extension assembly.
2) Underdeck clamp for gypsum and metal deck roofing.
3) Roof sump receiver.
4) Any other option might be needed by roof or area requirements.

3. Overflow shall comprise the following:

a) Manufacturer coated cast iron body (sump).

b) Combination membrane flashing clamp/deck receptor frame.

c) Internal bottom dome strainer.

d) Options
1) Underdeck clamp for gypsum and metal deck roofing.
2) Roof sump receiver.

4. Parapet scupper drain shall comprise of the following:

a) Manufacturer coated cast iron body.

b) Reversible back or bottom outlet, or 45° outlet.

c) Oblique grate with 90° combination frame and membrane flashing


clamp.

d) Option
1) Flush grate.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 INSPECTION

A. Refer to Inspection of SECTIONS 15055 and 15095.

B. The Contractor shall inspect and determine substrate to be in satisfactory condition,


with deck and sump pan fully anchored and aligned at proper location and elevation.
All surfaces shall be smooth, dry, clean, and free of sharp edges and other
irregularities.

3.02 INSTALLATION

A. General

1. Refer to Installation of SECTIONS 15055 and 15095.

2. Install storm drainage piping at the following minimum slope, unless other
otherwise noted:

a) Building Storm Drain


1) 1% in the direction of flow.

b) Horizontal Storm Drainage Piping


1) 2% in the direction of flow.

3. All roof drains location shall be installed as shown on the Contract Drawings
and on the approved Shop Drawings.

4. The Contractor shall install roof drain and accessories in strict conformance
with manufacturer’s written instructions.

5. Storm drains shall not discharge into any sanitary sewer.

6. Roof drains shall be connected to piping system.

7. The Contractor shall provide a permanent weather tight installation.

B. Coordination with Other Trades

1. The Contractor shall refer to membrane manufacturer’s specific drain flashing


instructions before starting drains installations.

2. The Contractor shall coordinate with other trades to assure that new drain
leaders and connective piping are complete, sealed and tested prior to opening
roof drains for service.

C. Trenching, Bedding, Backfilling and Compacting

1. For pipes laid underground, whenever applicable refer to SECTIONS 02085


and 02315.

2. Pipe manufacturer’s bedding and backfilling instructions shall be strictly


followed.

D. Coating for Underground Piping

1. Metallic pipes laid underground shall be coated with 2 coats of epoxy coating
with PVC wrap.

E. Welding, Brazing and Soldering

1. Refer to SECTION 15085.

F. Pipe Hangers and Supports

1. Refer to SECTION 15060.

3.03 FLUSHING AND CLEANING

A. Refer to SECTION 15145.

B. The Contractor shall clear the interior of the pipe of dirt and other material as the
work progresses.

C. Plugs

1. All open pipe ends or fitting openings shall be plugged or capped immediately
during construction.

3.04 TESTING

A. Refer to SECTION 15195.

B. Storm drainage piping tests shall be made prior to concealing pipe in walls, above
ceilings or below grade, shall be tested as follows:

1. Plug all openings of storm drain lines outside building.

2. Fill system with water to top of roof drains and overflows.

3. Water to stand in piping for a period of 12 hours.

4. Repair leaks encountered.

5. Repeat test and repair operations until system is proved tight.

6. Test underground piping at minimum 40 kPa for 12 hours and prove tight prior
to backfilling trenches.
