FIRE PROTECTION PIPING

A. GENERAL

1. WORK INCLUDED

a. Pipe, fittings, valve, and connections for fire protection systems. Pressure
ratings for sprinkler pipes, fittings and valves shall be as determined by

4. QUALITY ASSURANCE

a. Conform to NFPA 13 for sprinkler systems.

b. Conform to NFPA 14 for standpipe and hose systems.

c. Welding Materials and Procedures: Conform to ASME Code.

d. Employ certified welders in accordance with ANSI/ASME Section 9 or


AWS D10.9.

e. Valves: Bear UL label or marking. Provide manufacturer's name and


pressure rating marked on valve body.

5. SUBMITTALS

a. Submit product data under provisions of Section 21 01 05.

b. Indicate pipe materials used, jointing methods, supports, floor and wall
penetration seals.

6. DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

a. Deliver and store valves in shipping containers, with labeling in place,


under provisions of Section 15000.

b. Provide temporary protective coating on cast iron steel valves.

installation.

C. EXECUTION

1. PREPARATION

a. Ream pipe and tube ends to full inside diameter.

b. Remove burrs and bevel plain end ferrous pipe.

c. Remove scale and foreign materials, inside and outside, before


assembly.

a. Pipe Joints shall be provided with flexible grooved type mechanical
coupling. Mechanical coupling shall be compatible with pipe material Sch.
40 pipe. Mechanical Coupling (Flexible Type) shall be used to allow
angular, linear, rotational movement at each joint to accommodate pipe
expansion, contraction, setting, vibration, and pipe movement due to
seismic forces. Flexible grooved type coupling shall be manufactured by
"VICTAULIC" (U.S.A.) or approved equal.

b. Screw joint steel piping up to and including 2-inch diameter. Weld piping
2½-inch diameter and larger, including branch connections.

c. Die cut screw joints with full cut standard taper pipe threads with red lead
and linseed oil or other non-toxic joint compound applied to male threads
only.

d. Coat threaded ends with pipe lubricant compound.

e. In steel, piping, main sized saddle branch connections or direct


connection of branch lines to mains is permitted if main is one pipe size
larger than the branch for up to 6 inch mains and if main is two pipe sizes
larger than branch for 8 inch and larger mains. Do not project branch
pipes inside the main pipe.

f. Install piping in accordance with NFPA 13 for sprinkler systems and


NFPA 14 for standpipe systems.

g. Do not penetrate building structural members.

h. Provide sleeves when penetrating footings, floors and walls.

i. Seal pipe and sleeve penetration to achieve fire resistance equivalent to


fire separation required.

3. INSTALLATION - VALVES

a. Install valves with stems upright or horizontal, not inverted.

b. Provide gate valves for shut-off or isolating service.

c. Provide drain valves at main shut-off valves, low points of piping and
apparatus.

FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM

WET PIPE SPRINKLER SYSTEM

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. Provide all labor, material, equipment and services necessary for and incidental
to, the wet automatic sprinkler as shown on the Drawings and specified herein.

B. Secure the services of a skilled and experienced fire sprinkler system contractor,
licensed in this field to design and prepare complete hydraulic calculations and
shop drawings for the wet automatic sprinkler system.

1. Design criteria for a hydraulically designed wet automatic sprinkler system


shall conform to the following design criteria:

a. Minimum design criteria shall provide 0.20 gpm/sq. ft. (8.1 lpm/sq.
m.) over the most remote 2000 sq. ft. (186 sq. m.) area of the
system.

b. Total system water demand shall include a minimum hose


allowance of 250 gpm (946 LPM).

c. The total system water demand, including the 250 gpm (946 LPM)
minimum hose allowance, shall be at least ten percent (10%)
below the available water supply.

d. Sprinkler head spacing shall not exceed 130-sq. ft. (12.0 sq. m.)
for Ordinary Hazard.

C. Furnish and install a Wet Sprinkler System for the entire building, as indicated on
the drawing.

D. The complete Wet Automatic Sprinkler System shall be tested and approved as
required by the laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and orders of governmental
authorities having jurisdiction over this work.

1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE:

A. All work included in this Section shall be of an approved type and installed in
accordance with and conform to the provisions of the test edition of NFPA No.13
and all other applicable NFPA pamphlets.

1. Where an automatic fire alarm system is required by the laws,
ordinances, rules, regulations and orders of the governmental authorities
having jurisdiction over this Work, provide an automatic fire alarm system
and install in accordance with and conforming to the requirements of the
governmental authorities editions of NFPA No. 71, 72, 74 and 1221 and
all other applicable NFPA pamphlets.

B. Comply with all laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and orders of governmental
authorities having jurisdiction over this Work and secure any and all required
permits, approvals, tests and/or certifications.

C. Comply with all requirements of the Owner's Insurance Consultants, and secure
any and all required approvals.

D. Comply with all requirements of the Owner and secure any and all required
approval.

E. All equipment and devices shall be listed by Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. and
accepted by Factory Mutual Research Corporation.

F. Welding and brazing, where applicable, shall be done in accordance with the
methods set forth in the American National Institute for Power Piping, ANSI
B31.1.0, 1967 and including Addenda ANSI B 31.1.OA, 1971 and ANSI
B31.1.OB, 1971.

1.3 SUBMITTALS:

A. Submit the following as specified hereinafter:

1. Manufacturer's Literature: Materials description and recommended


installation instructions for all specified equipment items. Furnish data
covering manufacturer, model, model number, type, size, capacity and
Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. and Factory Mutual Research
Corporation listings for piping: fittings; hangers; gages; valves; sprinkler
heads; Siamese fittings; water-motor gong; inspector's test pipe; monitor
switches; flow switches; water control valve tags; sprinkler head wall
mounted cabinets; and automatic fire alarm system (where applicable).

2. Shop Drawings:

a. Submit five (5) sets of complete Shop Drawings. Complete Shop


Drawings shall consist of manufacturer's literature, site plan
showing the location and size of the public or private water supply
main, hydraulic calculations, water flow test, wet automatic
sprinkler system piping drawings including rough-in drawings and,
where applicable, wiring fire alarm system drawings including
wiring diagrams.

1. Water Flow Test:

a. Provide written certification indicating the date of


the flow test and the person or entity who
conducted the test, including phone number and
address.

1. Water flow test shall be as current as


possible and shall be no older than one (1)
year.

b. Provide the location of or distance to the point


where the water flow test was performed.

2. Hydraulic Calculations:

a. If a gridded system is utilized, at least two (2)


additional remote areas shall be tried and shown to
be less than the most demanding.

3. Wet Automatic Sprinkler System Piping Drawings:

a. The location of the most remote operating area


shall be clearly shown on the drawings.

b. Before commencing Work, secure the approvals, in the following


order, of the following:

1. Prepare complete calculations and shop drawings for the


system in conformance with all laws, ordinances, rules,
regulations and orders of governmental authorities having
jurisdiction over this part of the Work and secure any and
all required written approvals from the local regulating
authorities prior to submission to the Consulting Engineers.

2. Submit Shop Drawings to the Consulting Engineers for the


following reviews and approvals:

a. The Consultant:

1. The Mechanical Consultant shall review and


approved the shop drawings.

c. The Fire Protection Contractor shall make all required revisions to


the Shop Drawings and shall proceed in the following manner:

1. If the Shop Drawings are stamped "No Exception Taken"


by all parties involved, the Fire Protection Contractor shall
proceed with the fabrication and the installation of the
Work.

2. If the Shop Drawings indicate any changes or exceptions
by any and/or all reviewing parties involved, the Fire
Protection Contractor shall proceed as follows:

a. Revise the Shop Drawings and secure re-approvals


from the local regulating authorities prior to re-
submission to the Owner.

b. Re-submit to the Architect, the number of sets


specified hereinbefore, for record purposes only.
The General Contractor may proceed with the
fabrication and installation of the Work at his own
risk. Record copies of the Shop Drawings
containing Mechanical Consultant's and the
Owner's Insurance Consultant's approvals shall be
forwarded to the Fire Protection Contractor and the
Owner by Owner's Agent provided that all revisions
have been made.

c. Obtain written approval of the shop drawings from


the Consulting Engineer prior to fabrication any
materials or proceeding with the installation of the
Work.

3. Certification of System: Furnish test report and/or


certification from the local regulating authorities or other
acceptable evidence to indicate compliance with and
approval of the local regulating authorities.

4. Certification of Welders: Shall be performed by an


acceptable, Independent Testing Laboratory and Test
reports and coupons shall remain on file and available to
the Architect at all times. Certification Tests shall be by
destructive means and by Dye Penetration Method with X-
ray.

1.4 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING:

A. Deliver, receive, handle and store products and parts at the job site in such a
manner as to prevent damage and loss. Follow manufacturer's recommendations
wherever possible.

B. All materials shall be delivered to the job site in their original containers with
labels intact, fully identified with manufacturer's name, model, model number,
type, size, capacity, Underwriter's Laboratories, Inc. and Factory Mutual
Research Corporation listings and other pertinent information necessary to
identify the materials.

C. Immediately upon delivery to the job site, place materials within the building,
protected from the weather and construction traffic.

D. All damaged or otherwise unsuitable materials, when so ascertained by the
Owner, shall be immediately removed from the job site.

E. Replace damaged or otherwise unsuitable materials at no additional cost to the


Owner.

1.5 JOB CONDITIONS:

A. Cooperate with others involved in other parts of the Work, for the proper location
of sprinkler heads, piping, outlets and equipment before installation of same.

B. Examine the Drawings and Specifications in connection with other parts of the
Work and inform the Owner of anticipated conflicts. Failure to notify the Owner of
anticipated conflicts, prior to installation of materials and equipment, shall not
relieve this contractor of the responsibility of correcting conflicting work at no
additional cost to the Owner.

PART II - MATERIALS

2.1 PIPING:

A. Sprinkler piping shall be Sch.40 black steel and Iron pipe, "Electro Seamed
Welded" (ERW) manufactured in accordance with ASTM A53 or PNS 26 Heavy
Gage Series as manufactured by “SUPREME“, ”RNW PACIFIC “, “SUPER” or
approved equal. Fittings in accordance with ANSI B16.3 rated for 150 lb. (1050
kPa) working pressure, in accordance with NFPA13.

B. Underground piping shall be UPVC Class 180 psi nominal working pressure
suitable for pressure mains manufactured in accordance with ASTM
D1784/D2424/2427 pipe length shall be 6.0 meter (20 Ft.) effective length by
“NELTEX”, “ATLANTA”, “MOLDEX” or approved equal.

C. Dry standpipes shall be schedule 40 black steel pipes, ASTM A120 with 300 lb.
galvanized malleable iron screwed fittings, ANSI B16.3, pipe flanges and flanged
fittings in accordance with ANSI 16.5.

2.2 FITTINGS:

A. Fittings shall conform to the following minimum standards:

1. Grey or ductile iron mechanical joint fittings, Class 250, and shall be
produced in strict accordance with AWWA Specifications C110 and C111
and shall conform to details, tolerances and dimensions contained
therein.

2. Cast iron or ductile iron flanged fittings, Class 250, shall be produced in
strict accordance with AWWA Specifications C110 and C111 and shall
conform to details, tolerances and dimensions contained therein.

3. Factory fabricated carbon steel weld fittings shall be 150 lb. or 300 lb., as
required, and shall be produced in strict accordance with ANSI
Specifications B-16.0 and shall conform to details, tolerances and
dimensions contained therein.

4. Malleable iron screwed fittings, 150 lb. or 300 lb., as required, shall be
provided in strict accordance with ANSI Specifications B-16.9 and shall
conform to details, tolerances and dimensions contained therein.

5. Should PVC push-on joint pressure pipe be used for piping outside
building and below grade, the fittings shall be grey or ductile iron C1-PVC
push-on joint Class 250, and shall be produced in strict accordance with
AWWA Specifications C110 and C111 and shall conform to details,
tolerances and dimensions contained therein.

6. Should there be a grooved piping inside the building and above the floor,
the piping shall be installed in a cut grooved method using ductile iron
mechanical pipe couplings of a bolted type with pressure-responsive
gasket along with bolted type mechanical pipe ductile iron fittings and
flange adapters and shall conform to the details, tolerances and
dimensions as required by the system manufacturer.

7. Fittings shall be designed to withstand the working pressures involved,


but not less than 175 psi cold water pressure

2.3 HANGERS:

A. Hangers shall conform to the minimum requirements of the latest edition of NFPA
No. 13.

2.4 GAGES:

A. Gages shall conform to the minimum requirements of the latest edition of NFPA
No. 13.

2.5 VALVES:

A. Valves shall conform to the minimum requirements of the latest edition of NFPA
No. 13 and shall be UL listed and FM approved.

1. Gate valves, 2½ in. and larger: 150 psi working pressure

a. Kennedy/Stockham, flanged end, OS&Y with monitor switch.

2. Gate valves, 2 in. and smaller: 150 psi working pressure.

a. Kennedy/Stockham, screwed end, or equivalent.

3. Check Valves, 2½ in. and larger:

a. Kennedy/Stockham, central flanged end, or equivalent.

4. Butterfly Valve for Floor Control Valves

Shall be listed for Fire Protection Service UL and FM approved with


monitor switch. Valve shall be listed for 175psi, grooved ends. Ends shall
be joined by flexible coupling. Butterfly valves as manufactured by
"VICTAULIC", "Kennedy" or Approved Equal.

5. Post Indicator Valves/Pressure Relief Valve

Shall be listed for Fire Protection service UL and FM approved.

6. Hose Valves:

2½ (65 mm) diameter and 1½ (40 mm) diameter shall be combination


angle hose and pressure restricting valve, and the Operating Pressure
shall not be more than 100 psig ( 700 Kpa) , provided with pressure
restricting devices in compliance Fire Code of the Phil( RA-9514, 2008 )
UL listed manufactured by "POWHATAN", "Potter-Roemer" or
"CENTRAL" or Approved Equal.

7. OS&Y Gate Valves

OS&Y Gate valves shall be Shall be listed for Fire Protection Service UL
and FM approved with monitor switch. Valve shall be listed for 175psi,
flanged. OS &Y Gate valves as manufactured by "Kennedy" or Approved
Equal.

2.06 SPRINKLER HEADS:

A. Sprinkler heads shall conform to the minimum requirements of the latest edition
of NFPA No. 13, shall be UL and FM listed and shall be as specified hereinafter:

1. Head Type: Standard Upright "Plain Brass" Type, QRS (Quick Response
Type).

a. Location: Exposed Public Area, or shops.

Standard upright, brass, 68 deg. C (155 deg. F) temperature


rating and ½ in. (13mm) standard orifice.

2. For all areas with Ceiling, use pendent type with chrome finish. Sprinkler
actuating temperature of 155 ºF (68 ºC), listed by UL/FM, listed as Quick
Response Type.

3. Sidewall sprinklers shall be horizontal sidewall, extended coverage type


with chrome plated finished and matching escutcheon rated @ 155ºF
(68ºC) UL/FM listed as Quick Response Type

4. For Kitchen Areas - shall be either upright or pendent suitable for 212 ºF
(100 ºC) actuating temperature. Elevator machine room sprinklers shall
be upright rated @ 286ºF all listed as Quick Response Type.

2.07 INSPECTOR'S TEST PIPE:

A. Inspector's test and drain valve shall conform to the minimum requirements of the
latest edition of NFPA No.13, UL listed and FM approved. "SURE-TEST"
manufactured by G/J Innovations Inc. (U.S.A)
Alarm check valve:

Shall be UL listed and FM Approved, suitable for horizontal installation divided


seat ring type with external bypass and retarding chamber. Basic trimmings shall
include nipple, fittings, devices for external by-pass, alarm test bypass, gauge
and drain connections, mounting supports for retarding chamber and drip funnel.
Standard trimmings shall be provided for use with and including water motor
alarm a pressure switch. Alarm check valve shall be rated for maximum working
pressure of 175 psi and factory tested at 350 psi (with clapper open). Alarm
check valve shall be flauge x flauge or flange x groove type, sizes 6" (150mm)
and 8” (200mm). Flanges shall be class 125 in accordance with ANSI B16.1.

Alarm check valve shall be manufactured by "CENTRAL" Sprinkler Co. (U.S.A);


"Reliable" Automatic Sprinkler Co. (U.S.A); "VIKING", "Grinnel/GEM" Sprinkler or
Approved Equal.

2.08 MONITOR SWITCH:

UL listed and FM approved single pole double throw switch actuator and a spring
loaded plunger mounted in a housing, designed to make an electrical contact
when OS&Y. Control gate valve at sprinkler main riser is closed, "Grinnel" Model
F640, "Potter" model OSYSU-2 or Approved Equal.

2.09 WATER CONTROL HEAD WALL VALVE TAGS:

A. Water control valve tags shall conform to the minimum requirements of the latest
edition of NFPA No.26.

2.10 SPRINKLER CABINET:

A. Provide a wall mounted cabinet for the purpose of storing, on the premises, a
stock of spare sprinkler heads. The cabinet shall contain the following:

PART III - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION:

A. Examine all surfaces which is to support or receive parts place and subsequent
construction. Notify General Contractor if any condition exists which will prevent
the completion of the Work in this Section in a satisfactory manner. Application or
installation of materials constitutes acceptance of the supporting and adjoining
construction.

3.2 COORDINATION:

A. The location of major supply mains, Siamese fittings, etc., are shown and located
on the Drawings.

B. Installation of the wet automatic sprinkler system shall be coordinated, by the


Fire Protection Contractor, with the immediate and related mechanical and
electrical installations and all other trades involved in other parts of the Work for
the proper location and installation of sprinkler heads, piping, outlets and
equipment before installation of same.

3.3 INSTALLATION:

A. Install the wet automatic sprinkler system in strict accordance with the approved
drawings and each manufacturer's requirements where required, and as
applicable an automatic fire alarm system.

B. The connection between the system piping and fire pumps piping shall be made
with a suitable transition piece and shall be properly strapped or fastened with
approved devices.

C. All sprinklers pipe and fittings shall be so installed that the system may be
drained.

D. On wet pipe systems, sprinkler pipes may be installed level and trapped piping
shall be drained.

E. Drainage for the system or main shall be installed so as to properly drain all of
the system as follows:

a. On all risers 6 in. (150 mm) or larger, provide 3 in (80 mm) drain pipes
and valves.

b. On risers 2½ in. (65mm) to 3½ in. inclusive, provide drain pipes and
valves not smaller than 1¼ in. (32mm)

c. On smaller risers, provide drain pipes and valves not smaller than ¾ in.
(20mm)

F. Auxiliary drains shall be provided when a change in piping direction prevents


drainage of sections of branch lines or mains through the main valve.

a. Auxiliary drains not required for piping to a single sprinkler head on wet
pipe system.

b. Auxiliary drains on trapped sections of wet pipe system shall be a


minimum of 1 in. in size (25 mm).

1. When a capacity of trapped sections of pipe is five (5) gallons (20


L) or less, auxiliary drain shall consist of a 1 in. (25mm) nipple and
cap or brass plug.
2. When capacity of trapped sections of pipe is more than five (5)
gallons (20 L), the auxiliary drain shall consist of a 1 in. (25mm)
valve complete with nipple and cap or brass plug.

G. Direct interconnections shall not be made between sewers and sprinkler drains of
systems supplied by public water.

a. Drain discharge shall be in conformity with any health or water


department requirements.

b. Approved corrosive resistant pipe shall be used where drain pipes are
buried underground.

c. Drain pipes shall not terminate in blind spaces under the building.

d. Drain pipes, when exposed, shall be fitted with a turned down elbow.

e. Drain pipes shall be arranged as not to expose any part of the sprinkler
system to freezing conditions.

H. The sprinkler systems shall be protected, where applicable, to minimize or to


prevent pipe breakage where subject to earthquakes as follows:

1. Mechanical grooved couplings shall be provided:

a. Within 24 in. (600 mm) of the top and bottom of all risers except
as modified in "b".

b. For risers or drops 2½ in. (65mm) or larger and 3 ft. (0.90 m) to 7


ft. (2.13m) in length, one (1) mechanical groove coupling is
adequate.

2. Sleeves shall be provided around all piping extending through the walls,
floors, platforms and foundations:

a. Minimum clearance between the pipe and sleeve shall not be less
than 1 in. (25mm) for pipes 1 in. (25mm) through 3 in. (80mm) and
2 in. (50mm) for pipe size 4 in. (100mm) and larger.
b. The clearance between pipe and sleeve shall be filled with non-
combustible flexible material such as mineral wool, fiberglass or
equivalent.

3. Sway bracing shall be provided:

a. Feed and cross mains shall be braced to withstand a force under


tension or compression equal to fifty percent (50%) of the weight
of water filled piping, utilizing a two-way sway brace in 2½ in. (65
mm) and larger pipe. Top of risers shall be secured against drifting
in any direction utilizing a four-way sway brace.

b. Where "U" hook hangers are used on branch lines, the pipe shall
be secured to the end hanger by a wrap-around-type "U" hook.

c. U-type hangers used to support a system will satisfy most of the


requirements for sway bracing except that, in general, a
longitudinal hanger shall also be required for 2½ in. (65 mm) and
larger piping.

d. When feed and cross-mains are hung with single rods longer than
6 in., sway bracing shall be provided.

e. Sway bracing shall be attached directly to the feed and cross-


mains only.

f. Fastening of piping to sections, which will move differently, such


as a wall and a roof, is prohibited.

g. The latest piece of pipe at the end of a feed or cross main shall be
provided with a transverse brace.

1. Transverse braces may also act as longitudinal braces if


they are within 24 in. (600 mm) of the centerline of the
piping braced longitudinally.

I. Pipe, tube or fittings shall be joined by the following means:

1. Threaded Pipe and Fittings:

a. All threaded pipe and fittings shall have threads cut to ANSI
Standards B2.1. Care shall be taken that the pipe does not extend
into the fitting sufficiently to reduce the waterway.

b. Pipe shall be reamed after cutting to remove all burrs and fins.

c. Joint compound or tape shall be applied to the threads of the pipe


and not in the fitting.

2. Welding Pipe:

a. Sections of branch lines, cross-mains, feed mains or risers may be


shop welded.

b. Sections of welded piping shall be joined by means of screwed


flange or flexible gasketed joints or other approved fittings.

c. Torch cutting shall not be permitted as a means of modifying or


repairing sprinkler systems.

d. Welding shall be done in accordance with the methods set forth


hereinbefore.

e. Welders shall be certified as specified hereinbefore.

f. When welded fittings are used to form outlets:

1. Holes in piping shall be cut to the full diameter of the fitting.

2. Discs shall be retrieved.

3. Openings in piping shall be made smooth.

4. All slag and other welding residue shall be removed.

3. Cut groove:

a. Steel pipe may be joined with mechanical groove couplings


approved for service with grooves cut in pipe by an approved
grooving machine.

J. Sprinkler piping shall be substantially supported from the building structure which
must support the added load of the water-filled pipe plus a minimum of 250 lbs.
(114 kg) applied at the point of hanging.

1. Types of hangers and installation methods shall be in accordance with


and conform to the latest edition of NFPA No.13, unless they are certified
by a professional registered engineer for the following:

a. Designed to support five (5) times the weight of the water-filled


pipe plus 250 lbs. (114 kg) at each point of piping support.

b. These points of support are enough to support the sprinkler
system.

c. Ferrous materials are used for hanger components.

d. Detailed calculations shall be submitted, when required by the


reviewing authority, showing the following:
1. Stresses developed both in hangers and piping.

2. Safety factors allowed.

2. Sprinkler piping shall be supported independently of the ceiling sheathing,


except as follows:

a. Toggle hangers may be used only for the support of branch lines
under ceilings of hollow tile or metal lath and plaster.

3. When sprinkler piping is installed below ductwork, piping shall be


substantially supported from the building structure or from steel angles
supporting the ductwork provided the angles conform to the requirements
of the latest edition of NFPA No.13.

4. The components of hanger assemblies which directly attach to the pipe or


to the building structure, except for mild steel hangers formed from rod,
shall be listed.

5. For trapeze hangers, the minimum size of steel angle or pipe span
between purlins or joints shall be as specified in the latest edition of NFPA
No.13.

a. All angles shall be used with longer leg vertical.

b. Any other sizes or shapes giving equal or greater section modulus


will be acceptable.

c. The trapeze bar shall be secured to prevent slip page.

6. The size of hanger rods and fasteners required to support the steel angle
iron or pipe shall be as specified in the latest edition of NFPA No.13.

7. Eye rods and ring hangers shall be secured with the necessary lock
washers to prevent lateral motion at the point of support.

K. Screwed unions shall not be used on pipe larger than 2 inch. Couplings and
unions of other than screwed type shall be of the types approved specifically for
use in wet automatic sprinkler systems. Unions, screwed or flexible gasketed
couplings or flanges may be used to facilitate installations.

L. Use one-piece reducing fittings wherever a change is made in the size of the
pipe, except hexagonal or face bushings may be used in reducing the size of

openings of fittings when standard fittings of the required size are not available.

M. Install approved indicating valves on connections to water supplies and in supply


pipes to sprinklers unless a non-indicating valve, such as an underground gate
valve with an approved roadway box complete with T-wrench, is accepted by the
authority having jurisdiction. Such valves shall not close in less than five (5)
seconds when operated at a maximum possible speed from the normally open
position. This is to avoid damage to piping by water hammer.

1. The following may not incorporate indicating devices as part of the valve,
but the valve assembly described shall qualify as an approved indicating
valve.

a. An underground gate valve of approved type equipped with an


approved indicator post.

b. An approved water control valve assembly, which is normally open


and requires constant energy application to close and keep
closed.

c. An approved water control valve assembly, which has a reliable


position indication, connected to a remote supervisory station.

2. Check valves shall be of an approved type and may be installed in a


vertical or horizontal position.

N. Install an approved indicating valve in the system so located as to control all


sources of water supply, except fire department connection.

O. The fire department connection shall be made on the system side of a check
valve in the water supply piping.

1. The connection shall be made on the system side of the approved


indicating, check and alarm valves to the riser, unless the sprinklers are
supplied by fire department pumper connection in the yard.

2. On systems with two (2) or more risers, the connection shall be made on
the system side of all shutoff valves controlling other water supplies, but
on the supply side of the riser, shutoff valves so that with any one (1) riser
off, the connection will feed the remaining sprinklers, unless the sprinklers
are supplied by fire department pumper connections in the yard.

P. Provide an approved check valve in the line to the fire department connection
located as near as practicable to the point where it joins the system.

1. There shall be no shutoff valve in the fire department connection.

2. The piping between the check valve and the outside hose connection
shall be equipped with an approved automatic ball drip and a drain line to
the floor drain.

Q. A pressure gage shall be installed on the riser or main feed, at or near each test
pipe, with a connection not smaller than ¼ in. This gage connection shall be
equipped with a shutoff valve and with provisions for draining.

1. Gages shall be installed to permit removal.

2. Gages shall be located where they shall not be subjected to freezing.

R. Water-motor gong shall be located as near as practicable to the alarm valve or


other water flow detecting device.

1. The total length of the pipe to these devices shall not exceed 75 ft.

2. The device shall be so located and installed that all parts are accessible
for inspection, removal and repair and should be substantially supported.

a. Do not install the water-motor gong over 20 feet above the alarm
device.

3. All piping to these devices shall be galvanized or brass or other approved


corrosion resistant material of a size not less than ¾ in.

a. All piping shall be protected from the weather.

4. Drains from alarm devices shall be so arranged that there will be no


freezing and no overflowing of the alarm apparatus at domestic
connections or elsewhere with the sprinkler drains wide open and under
system pressure.

S. Test pipes, which may also be used as drain pipes, shall be provided locations
that will permit flowing tests to be made to determine whether water supplies and
connections are in order.

1. Such test pipes shall be equipped with a shutoff valve. Test pipes shall be
installed that the valves may be opened wide for a sufficient time to
assure a proper test without causing water damage to the building.

T. Provide all control, drain and test valves with approved identification signs
permanently attached to the identified device.

1. Provide approved identification signs for all outside alarm devices. The
sign shall be located near the device in a conspicuous position.

U. Install sprinkler head wall mounted cabinet with required spares in the
Mechanical Room in an accessible area as close as possible to the main riser.

V. Install the automatic fire alarm system, where applicable, including all electrically
operated alarm detachments and wiring forming part of an auxiliary, central
station, proprietary or remote station signaling system in accordance with the

latest editions of NFPA No.71, 72, 74 and 1221 and all other applicable NFPA
pamphlets.

1. An automatic fire alarm is required to have remote station signaling and


requires connection to the Owner's telephone service, it shall be
connected by the installing contractor, to the telephone equipment
connection block supplied by others as specified.
2. Water flow detector shall be UL listed, FM approved Water flow detecting
devices, including the associated alarm circuits, shall be tested by an
actual water flow through use of a test connection.

3. Outdoor electric alarm devices shall be of a type specifically listed for


outdoor use and the outdoor wiring shall be in approved conduit, properly
protected from the entrance of water.

3.3.1 Fire Stopping Materials – provide intumescent fire seals for gap in pipe shafts
and thru walls for UPVC pipes. Pipes shall be provided with intumescent
pipe collar, with a minimum fire resistance rating of 1.5 HR. Fire stopping
materials a
Manufactured by “PROMAT“, “HILTI“, “3M” or app. Equal tested in
accordance with either BS476, UL479, ASTM E184.

a. The space between the pipes and sleeves shall be made to be fire and
smoke proof by inserting a rockwool insulation as filling materials to the
remaining annular space, plus with self leveling, paintable fire stop
sealant on both ends. Fire Stop sealant shall be as manufactured by
“HILTI”, “3M”, ”PROMAT“ or approved equal, and shall be tested in
accordance with UL 1479, ASTM E1399/814.

3.4 PAINTING:

A. Paint sprinkler piping as shown on the Drawings and as specified.

1. Care shall be exercised whenever the sprinkler piping is given any kind of
coating to ensure that no automatic sprinkler surfaces are coated.

2. Automatic sprinklers shall not be painted and any sprinklers which have
been coated, except for factory applied coatings, shall be replaced with
new listed sprinklers.

3.5 CLEANING:

A. Swab-out lines and/or flush out system with fresh water until they are clean and
water runs clear at all outlets.

3.6 ACCEPTANCE TESTS:

A. Prior to requesting final approval of the automatic sprinkler equipment and


system by the local regulating authority having jurisdiction, the installing contrac-

tor shall furnish a written statement, with copies to the General Contractor and
the Owner, to the effect that the Work covered by its contract has been
completed and tested in accordance with the approved specifications and plans.

B. All tests required shall be performed by the installing contractor.

1. When the local regulating authority representative having jurisdiction


desires to be present during the conduct of tests, the installing contractor
shall give the authority having jurisdiction advance notification of time test
will be performed.

2. When the local regulating authority representative having jurisdiction is


not available and permission is granted by that authority, test may be
witnessed by the General Contractor and the Owner and a Contractor's
Material and Test Certificate shall be completed and forwarded to the
authority having jurisdiction.

C. The following minimum tests shall be performed. Any additional tests required by
the local regulating authority having jurisdiction shall also be performed.

1. Flushing Test.

2. Hydrostatic Test.

a. Test Pressure: 205 psi minimum.

3. Leakage Test.

4. Drainage Test.

5. Automatic Fire Alarm System Test.

2. (A) HORIZONTAL BASE MOUNTED PUMPS

a. Fire Pumps (FP-1 and 2, 1 run and 1 as stand by) shall be centrifugal
horizontal split case noted by Underwriters Laboratories (U.L.) and
Factory Mutual (F.M.) approved. For Fire pump capacities refer to
equipment schedule. Fire Pump motor Controller shall be suitable for 380
VAC ( 360 to 420 VAC voltage range .

b. Each pump shall deliver not less than 65% of rated head at 150% of
capacity and shall have a shut-off head not to exceed 120% of rated head
as required by NFPA 20.

c. STRAINER: The pump suction shall be fitted with a non-ferrous clip-on


basket or cone strainer with free area equal to four times the inlet area.

d. Flexible Pipe/Pump Connector- shall braided type Stainless Steel Type


304 with minimum working pressure 175 psig ( 12.12 bar, 1212 kPa)

(B) ELECTRIC MOTOR

Electric motor shall be open drip proof motor with 1.15 service factor and no-
reverse ratchet. Motor shall be suitable for 230volts, 3 Phase, 60Hz. Refer also
to electrical provision.

It is the responsibility of the pump manufacturer to properly size the driver in

accordance with UL or FM guidelines.

(C) ACCESSORIES

The fire pump shall include the following accessories:

One (1) 3-½" discharge gauge.

One (1) air release valve with reducing flange.

One (1) discharge tee.

One (1) hose valve manifold, outside type.

One (1) set of 2½" hose valves with caps and chains.

(D) FIRE PUMP CONTROLLER

The fire pump controller shall be specifically approved for fire pump service by
the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual (FM) Association. The
control equipment shall be completely assembled, wired, and tested at the
factory.

All equipment shall be enclosed in approved drip tight enclosure.

The controller shall be of combined manual and WYE Delta closed transition type
and incorporating the following as a minimum:

a.) Disconnect switch - externally operable, quick break type (delete if limited
service).

b.) Circuit breaker with trips in each phase, calibrated at least to 300% of the
motor full load current. Capacity of the circuit breaker shall be
amperes interrupting capacity.

c.) Motor starter capable of being energized automatically through the pressure
switch or manually by an externally operable handle.

d.) Pressure switches.

e.) Running period timer set to keep motor in operation when started
automatically, for a minimum period of time, not exceeding seven minutes.

f.) Pilot lamp to indicate circuit breaker closed and power available.

g.) Ammeter test link and voltmeter test studs.

h.) Alarm relay to energize an audible or visible alarm through and independent
source of power, to indicate circuit breaker open or power failure.

i.) Remote start switch relay.

(E) JOCKEY PUMP:

Jockey pump shall deliver 30 gpm vs. 160 psi (JP-1). Jockey pump shall be
suitable for 380Volts AC Nominal (340 to 420) VAC 3 Phase, 60 Hertz ODP
motor.

(F) JOCKEY PUMP CONTROLLER

The jockey pump shall be controlled by an UL Listed and FM Approved automatic


jockey pump controller, fusible type with full voltage starter. Minimum run timer is
optional.

(G) FUNCTIONS

a) The jockey pump shall start on a pressure drop in the system. It is


optional for jockey pump to remain in operation for a minimum amount of
time.

b) The fire pump shall start automatically on a further pressure drop or on


jockey pump failure.

c) The fire pump shall stop manually.

(H) TESTING

Each fire pump shall be given a non-witnessed performance test and a non-
witnesses hydrostatic test of the discharge head and bowl assembly to NFPA-20
specifications at the factory before shipment. Minimum hydrostatic test pressure
shall be twice shut-off pressure but not less than 250 PSI.

The controllers shall be fully assembled and factory tested by the controller
manufacturer to shipment.

3. FIRE PUMP ACCESSORIES

a. Concentric increaser and check valve in pump discharge and OS&Y gate
or butterfly valve on system side of check valve.

b. Fire pump bypass fitted with OS&Y gate or butterfly valves and check
valve.

c. Main pressure relief valve, UL 1478.

d. Suction pressure gage, 4½-inch (110mm) diameter dial with snubber,


valve cock and lever handle.

e. Discharge pressure gage mounted on board attached to pump, with


snubber, valve cock and lever handle.

Support piping adjacent to pump such that no weight is carried on pump
casings. For base mounted pumps, provide supports under elbows on
pump suction and discharge. Refer to Section 21 12 00.

d. Provide drains for bases and seals, piped to and discharging into floor

f. Provide for connection to electrical service.

g. Lubricate pumps before start-up.

B. PRODUCTS

1. Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher (FE-1) - Shall be tri-class dry chemical or multi-
purpose (primarily mono amonnium phosphate) or equivalent which is non-toxic
agent which extinguishes flames in seconds and inhibits reflash. It shall be
effective against Class A, B and C fires. Contents shall be 10 lb. (4.5 kg), the unit
shall be mounted inside the fire hose cabinet or thru the fire extinguisher cabinet.
Shall be manufactured by “ABRO/KIDDIE“, “AMEREX“ or Approved equal.

a.) HALOTRON – I (HYDROCHLOROFLUOROCARBON) Clean Agent fire
extinguishing system in accordance with NFPA10 (2007 Ed.), UL Listed and
FM Approved shall be provided for fire suppression for Transformer room,
MDF room, lift motor room, electrical room using portable or wheeled type fire
extinguishers in compliance with the DENR Clean Air Act requirements.

b.) FE-2: Use HALOTRON –I ,15 lbs (7.0 Kg). Portable type for Pump room and
other mechanical rooms.

c.) FE-3: For Transformer Room, LVSG and Gen-Set Room, provide a minimum
of 50 lbs capacity, wheeled type HALOTRON–I Clean Agent or 125 lb Dry
Chemical Purple K ULC Class 240 to 300 B:C Wheeled type as
manufactured by “ABRO/KIDDIE”, “AMEREX” or approved equal.

d.) FE-3B: AFFF- AER- O-FOAM, 2.5 gal. (9.46 Liters) for Diesel Fuel Storage
Room.

e.) FE-4: Use HALOTRON - I non–CFC portable fire extinguishers for Computer
and Server Rooms at 4.5 Kg (10.0 lbs) minimum capacity.

3. All Fire Extinguishers Type and Quantity shall conform to the requirement
of the New Fire Safety Enforcement Manual ( 2012 Edition ) by Phil BFP.

3. FIRE HOSE CABINETS (FHC)

a. Provide recessed cabinets fabricated from 1.2 mm thick BI sheet metal with
1.5 mm thick door d trim. Provide door with hollow cabinet construction, with
full length semi-concealed piano hinge, rounded corners and 5 mm thick clear
float glass.

b. Cabinets shall be fully recessed type or drawings. Suitable for surface


mounting, as indicated on the drawings Provide outside trim for flush
mounting. Overall size of cabinet shall be 815 mm x 750 mm x 200 mm deep.
Cabinets shall be prime coat painted steel similar to “ ANAKO “ Phil. Or
approved equal.

c. Equip each cabinet with 40 mm chrome plated angle valve, cast or forged
brass , hand wheel and orifice restrictor similar to “ GIACOMINI “ or
approved equal “ to limit to 100 psig ( 6.93 bar or 693 kPa ) maximum
flowing pressure at hose connection. Provide angle valve with approved
equal. Locate angle valve at a maximum height of 1.5 meters above the floor.

d. Provide 30.0 meters long x 40 mm dia. Synthetic rubber lined polyester fibre
hose, mildew and rot resistant similar to “Fireking “ Fire hose or approved
equal.

e. Provide adjustable, brass type combination spray , with bumper to protect fog
nozzle ,with shut off (UL/FM) listed 100 psig maximum operating pressure .
Fog nozzle shall be similar to “ GIACOMINI “ or approved equal.

f. Provide stationary rack with pins designed for 180 deg. Movement andlocking
pin to prevent flow of water into hose until fold is removed from rack.

g. Equip each Fire Hose Cabinet with one portable fire extinguisher Class ABC
or Multipurpose type extinguishers that utilize a specially fluidized and
siliconized mono ammonium phosphate dry chemical. It shall chemically
insulate Class A fires by melting at approximately at 350 deg. F ( 177 deg. C
) and coats the surface to which it is applied, it smothers and breaks the
chain reaction of Class B fires and will not conduct electricity back to the
operator. Muli-purpose fire extinguishers shall be similar to “ AMEREX “ ,
