SPECIFICATION – PAVEMENT MARKING

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

This specification provides the requirement for marking on all new roadway
pavements and restoring to original conditions the pavements which are disturbed
during the execution of this contract.

The work includes preparation of surfaces and furnishing and applying paint for
pavement, parking areas and curb markings, traffic striping, directional arrows and
messages, and raised traffic bars (rumble strips) in accordance with paragraph 1.6
below and the attached Standard Drawings

1.2 References

Marafiq Specifications

A. MQ-SP-C-2008, Roadway and Area Paving Construction

1.3 Tolerances

A. Width of Lines: Minus zero, plus 3 mm.

B. Lengths of Skip or Lane Lines and Unpainted Surface between the Skip Lines:
Plus or minus 75 mm.

C. Wet Film Thickness: Minimum of 0.46 mm.

D. Location of Directional Arrows, Messages, and Stripes: Within 50 mm of


indicated location.

E. Size of Letters and Arrows: Plus or minus 50 mm.

1.4 Submittals

A. Submit paint manufacturer's certification of compliance with the specified


requirements.

B. Give 48 hours advance notice of the time when pavement marking and striping
will be performed.

C. Submit drawings showing the layout, size and colors of the proposed pavement
marking and striping.

D. Submit methods and materials as required for corrective measures in paragraph


3.4 below.

1.5 Job Conditions

A. Weather: Apply traffic paint only when the ambient air temperature is 4°C or
higher and the temperature of the surface to be painted is 7.2°C or higher. If
pavement is wet, allow the surface to dry for a minimum of 8 hours after it
appears surface dry.

B. Protection of the Work: Exercise care to prevent paint from dripping on the
pavement, curb and sidewalks, and remove any drippings or spillage before they
harden. Protect adjoining surfaces against over-spray or paint splash stains,
throughout painting operations.

C. Traffic Maintenance: Furnish, install, and maintain traffic cones, barricades,


lights and other protective devices required to protect traffic, workmen and
completed pavement marking and striping, and remove when marking and
striping, including painted sections of curbing and raised traffic bars, have set and
hardened to such degree that they will not be damaged.

D. Scheduling of the Work: Schedule marking and striping operations to permit


paint to set and harden before the area is to be opened to traffic.

1.6 Quality Assurance

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.1 General

All goods and products covered by these specifications shall be procured from an in-
Kingdom manufacturer, or from a manufacturer located in another Gulf Cooperation
Council (GCC) state. All such procurement shall be in accordance with current
applicable policies and regulations of the Saudi Arabian Government. Procurement of
goods and products manufactured elsewhere must be approved by Marafiq.

A. Provide materials conforming to the requirements of AASHTO Designation:


M249 for Thermoplastic White or Yellow Traffic Type F Paints and AASHTO
Designation: M247 Type 1 Glass Beads for Use in Traffic Paint.

B. All painted surfaces shall receive paint and glass beads.

2.3 Raised Traffic Bars (Rumble Strips)

Provide bituminous concrete material in accordance with MQ-SP-C-2008, Roadway


and Area Paving Construction and MOT Section 6.09, as indicated.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.1 Equipment

Use atomizing spray-type equipment, guides, and templates designed for the purpose
and which are also designed to apply strips, symbols, and letter of uniform size and
cross section, with clear cut edges and uniform thickness for the coverage specified.

3.2 Layout of the Work

Provide sufficient control points to permit application of stripes, directional arrows,


messages, crosswalk marking, and parking space delineations as shown on the
contract drawings, with the tolerance specified.

3.3 Application

A. Surface Conditions: Do not apply paint to new bituminous pavement until 24


hours after pavement has been placed.

B. Cleaning: Clean the surface of areas to be painted of sand, dust, dirt, laitance, oil,
and other foreign substances, with power broom and absorption material.

C. Painting:

- Apply paint only during daylight hours. Except for special area and
markings requiring hand-painting, apply all pavement marking by
machine.

- Suspend painting operations when wind conditions are such that blowing
of spray-applied paint and deposit of dust on newly applied paint is
likely.

- Clean painting equipment, guides, and templates at the end of each day's
work, or more frequently if necessary to obtain application of pavement
marking of the quality specified.

3.4 Corrective Measures

A. Repair or remove and reapply any pavement markings that fail to satisfy the
requirements indicated.

B. Submit proposed means of cleaning, removing, or obliterating unsatisfactory


markings to Marafiq for approval prior to commencing corrective work.

C. Use materials for cleaning pavement of spills, spatter, or over spray that will not
injure the paved surface.
