- This podcast covers a wide variety of topics all surrounding how to teach math

better but focuses on increasing student engagement in the math classroom. This

podcast is hosted by Kyle Pearce and John Orr who have a combined 26 years of

teaching experience, they are both published authors in educational journals, and

they have both been keynote speakers at large conferences. More info can be

found on their Website. This podcast will help give teachers lots of ideas about

activities and strategies to implement and mindsets to take on for their

classrooms. Kyle and John give great advice to continue building classrooms that

are productive and the most beneficial for students.

- Tondevold, C. (2020). Build Math Minds the Podcast. Buildmathminds.com. Retrieved

December 4, 2021, from https://buildmathminds.com/podcast/.

- This podcast is actually meant for Elementary school teachers to learn how to

“build math minds and not calculators” which is the motto of this podcast. The

podcasts are very short, typically 5-10 minutes which makes them very easy to

listen to but they also contain very important ideas that could be processed over a

few hours. The creator of the podcast is Christina Tondevold who was a middle

school teacher and realised that many students weren’t learning math, they were
just memorizing strategies. That being said, this podcast is very beneficial for all

math educators since a lot of our students still don’t have the understanding and

number sense that Christina is talking about.

- Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All

- The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. (2015). Principles to actions:

Ensuring mathematical success for all.

- This book is written by the NCTM which makes it very reliable and also aligned

with the NCTM Standards which may be helpful for some teachers. This book

offers so many strategies to increase the effectiveness of teaching and learning

that is happening in the classroom. Each strategy begins with the research that

supports that specific strategy. It then describes the strategy with examples and

gives concrete teacher and student actions to ensure proper implementation of the

strategy. This is a useful guide for teachers to check themselves and the

effectiveness of their teaching. This book offers insight and practical steps for

teachers to ensure that they are reaching all members of their classes.

Project based learning

- Leaders of their own learning

- Berger, R., Rugen, L., & Woodfin, L. (2014). Leaders of their own learning:

Transforming schools through student-engaged assessment. Wiley.

- Leaders of their own Learning focuses on the role of assessment in schools and

discusses how our assessments change the way students perceive their own work

and learning. This book proposes a whole schooling model so it can be a lot to

take in but there is still benefit that can be found when readers tak the essence of
what is being said and actively applying it in their classrooms. The book takes a

deep dive into the goals that we set for students and proposes that we should have

clear goals in mind and then assess student’s work based on those goals. It also

includes strategies and ideas to get students to take control of their learning,

through assessment techniques of course.

Culturally Relevant Instruction

- Leith, C., Rose, E., & King, T. (2016). Teaching Mathematics and Language to English

Learners. The Mathematics Teacher, 109(9), 670–678.

- This magazine is a valuable resource for Math teachers and I thought that this

specific article was extremely beneficial since it had to do with teaching math to

ESL students which is a very challenging topic. The journal is produced by the

NCTM which makes the information very reliable. I thought that the information

was beneficial for all math teachers since we often run into situations where there

are general knowledge gaps and we have to figure out how to bridge those. Here

language was the knowledge gap so they had specific strategies that might work

elsewhere as well!

Inquiry Based Learning

- Francesco Laudano, Francesco Saverio Tortoriello & Giovanni Vincenzi (2020) An

experience of teaching algorithms using inquiry-based learning, International Journal of

Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 51:3, 344-353, DOI:

10.1080/0020739X.2019.1565453
- This Article was interesting and I thought that the journal may be valuable for

teachers to read when given the opportunity. This article gives advice on inquiry

based learning in an area that is often just memorized, algorithms. Algorithms are

important for finding solutions but they can often take the thinking out of doing

math. The article makes some great points to argue that algorithms should still be

taught using inquiry based learning so that the thinking is still present and

students understand the algorithms and can still find correct answers. This Journal

is an internationally published journal so the information may not pertain directly

to U.S. standards and curriculum but there may be valuable information since it

publishes research from all over the world.

Technology in the classroom

- This site has a lot of useful resources, the best of which are their prebuilt activities

that are available for free. These activities involve a lot of graphing and they are

extremely beneficial to get students acquainted with technology and graphing

tools. There is also a graphing calculator function that is an alternative to

expensive and possibly challenging graphing calculators that students may have to

purchase. The graphing calculator may still take some time and investigation to

learn but it is on a device that students are already familiar with, the internet!

Activity/Materials

- This website is created by the NCTM, a national organization of educators so it is

reliable. All of the activities also rely on the standards since the website is from
the NCTM. The site is very beneficial since it can be searched using a search bar

and there is also a list of subjects that can be selected to target one's search.

- Math Aids is a fantastic website for finding and making worksheets. The

worksheets are customizable so the kinds of questions can be changed to fit

individual needs. It has worksheets that are listed by subject and also by more

specific topics so everything is easy to find. The website also provides the user

with an answer key so that is a huge plus!
