Notes and Policies
Submission: Handwritten solution for the following problems on A-4 paper. Do not turn in
pages torn out of odd sized note-books cobbled by tearing their corners
without using staples. Such submissions are unacceptable.

Acceptability: As all submissions will be similar, what distinguishes your work is how you
set up the problem, declare variables, introduce constants, etc. Sketch neat
diagrams, show all working and units (where applicable).

Plagiarism: Please note that we have ZERO tolerance policy on plagiarism, so it is

important that you attempt the questions yourself. Any act of plagiarism will
be reported to the Disciplinary Committee.
Problem # 1 [10 pts]
Solve the given DEQ by undetermined coefficients.

4
𝑦 − 𝑦 ′′ = 4𝑥 + 2𝑥𝑒 −𝑥
Problem # 2 [10 pts]
Solve the given IVP by undetermined coefficients.

′′ sin 𝑥 ; 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 𝜋Τ2
𝑦 + 4𝑦 = 𝑔 𝑥 = ቊ
0 ; 𝑥 > 𝜋 Τ2

and 𝑦 0 = 1, 𝑦 ′ 0 = 2

Hint: Solve the problem on two intervals, and then find a solution so
that 𝑦 and 𝑦 ′ are continuous at 𝑥 = 𝜋Τ2
Problem # 3 [10 pts]
Find a general solution to the DEQ using the method of Variation of
Parameters.

𝑦 ′′ − 2𝑦 ′ + 𝑦 = 𝑡 −1 𝑒 𝑡
Problem # 4 [10 pts]
Find a general solution to the DEQ

𝑤 ′′ + 4𝑤 = sec 4 (2𝑡)
Problem # 5 [10 pts]
Solve the given IVP for the Cauchy-Euler DEQ

𝑡 2 𝑦 ′′ 𝑡 − 4𝑡𝑦 ′ 𝑡 + 4𝑦 𝑡 = 0; 𝑦 1 = −2, 𝑦 ′ 1 = −11

What is the interval/domain of the solution?

Problem # 6 [10 pts]
Find a general solution to the nonhomogeneous Cauchy-Euler DEQ
using the method of Variation of Parameters

𝑡 2 𝑦 ′′ 𝑡 + 𝑡𝑦 ′ 𝑡 + 9𝑦 𝑡 = − tan(3 ln 𝑡)
Problem # 7 [10 pts]
Modify the method of Cauchy-Euler DEQ to find a general solution to
the following DEQ for 𝑡 > 2

(𝑡 − 2)2 𝑦 ′′ 𝑡 − 7(𝑡 − 2)𝑦 ′ 𝑡 + 7𝑦 𝑡 = 0

Problem # 8 [10 pts]
Solve the given DEQ by undetermined coefficients.

𝑦 ′′ + 𝑦 = 2𝑥 sin 𝑥
