2Unit 1 Mathematical Methods/Ongoing Revision – Revision Task 5

Name: ___________________

Feedback Task 5
Purpose: To build ongoing revision into the weekly teaching and learning program.
Satisfactory completion: All questions must be answered so that the thinking and mathematical processes
used is clearly evident. The task must be completed on loose leaf lined paper, with each question clearly
labelled and neatly presented. The question sheet must be stapled to your solutions.
Due: This task is to be completed during the weekend and is due in the first maths lesson of week 5.

Question 1

Find the equation of the line that passes through the points (−1, 8) and (3, −4).

Question 2

State the gradient and y-intercept for the line 3𝑦 − 2𝑥 = 8.

Question 3

Factorise the following expressions:

a) 4𝑥 2 − 49 b) 10𝑥 2 − 19𝑥 + 6 c) 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 − 8

Question 4

a) Sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 + 1)2 − 8, labelling axial intercepts and the turning point with their
coordinates.
b) Hence, solve 2(𝑥 + 1)2 − 8 > 0.

Question 5

For which values of k does 2𝑥 2 + (𝑘 + 2)𝑥 + 1 = 0 have two real solutions?
