Answers to Assignment 3
Problem:
Timber formwork and shoring support a cast-in-place concrete slab during curing.
The 9 inch concrete slab is placed on the ¾ inch plywood supports that are
supported by 2 x 4 joists spaced 16 inches apart. 4 x 6 stringers spaced 36 inches
apart support these joists. The shores directly underneath the stringers are 4 x 4
and are spaced at 5 ft intervals along the stringers. The lumber is No. 2 Douglas Fir
Larch. The concrete has a specific weight of 150 pcf and a construction live load of
50 psf. Limit all deflection to l/360.
You are asked to:
1. Check the joist spacing of 16 in.
2. Check the stringer spacing of 36 in.
3. Check shoring space of 5 ft along the stringer.

Estimate loads
9 in.
Dead load, concrete and rebar, ×150 pcf = 112.5 psf
12 in.
Minimum construction live load on forms = 50 psf
Weight of forms, estimated ≅ 7.5 psf
________________________________________________________
Total form design load = 170 psf

Part 1: Check Joist Spacing

From Tables 4-2 and 4-3, for ¾ in.plywood:
Fb = 1545 psi FS = 57 psi E = 1,500,000 psi
3 4
S = 0.412 in. I = 0.197 in. Ib/Q = 6.762 in.2
CHECK BENDING
For design purposes, consider a 1-foot-wide strip of plywood. Then:
w = design load of 170 psf × 1 ft. = 170 lb/lf

Fb S 1545 × 0.412
l = 10.95 = = 21.2 in.
w 170
CHECK DEFLECTION
For ∆ = l 360 :

EI 1500000 × 0.197
l = 1.693 = 1.693 = 1.693 1738.2 = 20.3 in.
w 170
CHECK ROLLING SHEAR
For design purposes, consider a 1-foot-wide strip of plywood. Then:
VQ Q
FS = = 0.6 wL × since V = 0.6wL
Ib Ib

FS Ib 57
So: L= × = × 6.762 = 3.78 ft. or 45.3 inches
0.6 w Q 0.6 × 170

⇒ l = 20.3 in. governs. Therefore joist spacing of 16 inches is adequate.

Part 2: Check Stringer Spacing

2×4 joists are being used. From Table 4-2: Fb = 1000 psi and FV = 95 psi and should be
adjusted for horizontal shear by a factor of 2. E = 1,500,000 psi.
FV′ = 2.0 × 95 = 190 psi

Joist spacing, in. 16 in.

w= × design load, psf = × 170 psf ≅ 227 lb lf
12 in. ft. 12 in. ft.

From Table 4-1B, for S4S 2×4s: bd = 5.25 in.2, I = 5.36 in.4, and S = 3.06 in.3

CHECK BENDING

Fb′S 1000 × 3.06

l = 10.95 = 10.95 = 40.2 in.
w 227

ATCEII_ha3.doc
ATCE-II − Temporary Structures Answers to Assignment 3 Page 3

CHECK DEFLECTION
For ∆ = l/360

EI 1500000 × 5.36
l = 1.693 = 1.693 = 1.693 35418.5 = 1.69 × 32.84 = 55.5 in.
w 227

CHECK SHEAR
Using Equation 6-12, and solving for L:

0.9w  2d  0.9 × 227  2 × 3.5 

fV = L −  ⇒ 190 = ×L −  ⇒ 190 = 38.91L − 22.7 ⇒ L = 5.47 ft.
bd  12  5.25  12 

or L = 65.6 in.

Comparing the three spans calculated above, l = 40.2 in. governs. Therefore, stringer
spacing of 36 inches is adequate.

Part 3: Check Shore Spacing

Determine the shoring space:
Stinger spacing, in. 36 in.
w= × load on form, psf = × 170 psf = 510 lb lf
12 in. ft. 12 in. ft.

4×6 stringers are used. From Table 4-1B for S4S 4×6s:
bd = 19.25 in.2, I = 48.53 in.4, and S = 17.65 in.3; and d = 5.5 in.

CHECK BENDING

FV′ S 1000 × 17.65

l = 10.95 = 10.95 = 64.4 in.
w 510

CHECK DEFLECTION
For ∆ = l/360

EI 1500000 × 48.53
l = 1.693 = 1.693 = 1.693 142735.3 = 1.69 × 52.26 = 88.3 in.
w 510

CHECK SHEAR
Using Equation 6-12, for continuous beam:

FV′ bd 2d 190 × 19.25 2 × 5.5

L= + ⇒ L= + = 7.97 + 0.92 = 8.89 ft = 106.7 in.
0.9 w 12 0.9 × 510 12

From the above calculations, l = 64.4 in. governs. Therefore, shore spacing of 5 ft. (60
inches) is adequate.
