Introduction:

            In the surging event of the pandemic crisis, did you ever ask yourself,
“What does life mean to me?” While most statistics are counting on Covid19 case
rate and mortality rate, did you ever find data that tells about the mortality rates of
the mother and child? Imagine yourself as a fetus being in your mother’s womb
while in this pandemic. What struggles did your mother and the expecting family
undergo at this moment? If you are to speak, what will you tell your mother and
your family?

The area of childbearing and childrearing families is a major focus of


nursing practice in promoting health for the next generation. Comprehensive
preconception and prenatal care are essential in ensuring a healthy outcome for
mother and child.

In this activity, you will be led to discover your personal values about life,
procreative health, maternal and child health and family health. Self- awareness of
your own value of life is the key to quality nursing care. Use this key to answer the
series of questions below.

1. What is a family? Give at least 3 definitions. After thorough


understanding of the term, make your own conceptual definition.

2. What are the various structures, characteristics, functions and roles


of the family? Describe each in the Filipino context of a family.
3. What are the stages of family and their tasks? Describe each stage in
the Filipino context of a family.

4. What are the levels of prevention in family health?

5. What is the maternal mortality rate globally in 2019?

6. What is the current under-five mortality rate?

7. What is the current statistical condition of family planning worldwide?

8. To address the global health issues especially to mothers and


children, what is the ultimate plan driven by the United Nation in the health
aspect? What is the implication of this goal to health concerns to all
childbearing and childrearing mothers and their children?

9. What is the strategic response of the Department of Health in


improving maternal health and reducing newborn mortality? Describe this
strategy.
10. How will this strategic plan of delivery packages be facilitated in the
different life stage: pre-pregnancy, prenatal, intrapartal and postpartal?

11. What is Respectful Maternity Care (RMC)? Give at least 3 definitions.


After thorough understanding of the term, make your own conceptual
definition.

12. What are the Universal Rights of Childbearing Women?

13. What are the five (5) ways that a nurse should do to show respect to
mothers?

14. What are the implications of the nursing care and responsibility of the
nurse in the ethical issues and challenges in maternal and child nursing
care?

15. What are the roles of nurses in clinical ethical decision making in
maternal and child nursing care?

 THE BIG QUESTION:

Individually, observe your own family by looking at its structure, characteristics, roles and
functions of each member and the existing level of family health prevention.

What family values in life do we have that co-exist in own perception and
value of life?

a. How am I serving the role of a daughter/son in the life of


each member of the family especially to my mother?

b. Why do all these values necessary for my growth and


development as I relate to nursing a childbearing woman?

c. What preparations do I need in order that I can implement a


quality nursing care to mothers, children, adolescents, family and
community?

In order to answer all these questions, take time to:

A. Ask yourself, what are my personal values in life in relation to the


roles that I have in my family? Make your own "Family Tree" or create a
genogram.

B. Interview and assess the learning need of your own mother, or if not,
any childbearing woman you know. The purpose of the interview is to make
essential nursing care as a first entry of the many nursing process that you
will be equipped in the future. It does not matter how long or short the
interview is, for as long as you target your purpose- i.e., to make a
Teaching Care Plan.
C. Answer the big questions using a multimedia source

Then, place all these in your "My Digital Portfolio" section, and on the page
entitled, "Me, My Family and I Care" as

TEAM: You can do the Team answer within regular day and time of our class as
your formative assessment. (Submit 1-2 days)

INDIVIDUAL: Whereas you may place individual work for Summative Assessment,
i.e., the My Digital Portfolio "Me, My Family and I Care". (Submit by Monday or
Tuesday)
