What is Drugs?
definition
The word Drug, taken from French word Drogue which means
Dry Herb, strongly suggests that earliest drugs were taken out
from plant sources.
It is a substance used as a medication or in the preparation of
medication

Drugs are substances that change a person's mental or physical


state
They can affect the way your brain works, how you feel and
behave, your understanding and your senses
This makes them unpredictable and dangerous, especially for
young people
TYPES OF DRUGS
Legal — for example, alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco
Illegal — for example, cocaine or heroin

WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE DRUGS?


They are curious and want to see what happens
They want to fit in or feel pressured by their peers
They enjoy the effect on their body — for example, feeling excited
and energetic, or relaxed and calm
They help them cope with situations — for example, reducing pain
or relieving stress
Classification of Drugs
types
ALCOHOL
single most widely abused substance throughout the world,
alcohol impacts several of the body’s basic functions.

OPIOIDS
More commonly referred to as opiates
work by interacting with neurotransmitters in the brain and
blocking the signals that they are sending.

BENZODIAZEPINES
commonly known in America as Benzos
function by interacting with a neurotransmitter
EXAMPLE: Ativan, Valium ,Xanex
CANNABINOIDS
Have similar chemical compounds to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the
active agent in marijuana

BARBITURATES
The functioning of the central nervous system is slowed down
a derivative of the chemical barbituric acid.

HALLUCINOGENS
drugs that alter the thinking processes and the
perception of those who take them

METHAMPHETAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE OR SHABU
remains to be the most abused drug in the country

well known for being a “party drug”
commonly used in parties and nightlife
considered as the most expensive drug in the market

History of Drugs
in the philippines
In 1972, the drug problem was just at its incipient stage, with only
20,000 drug users and marijuana as the top choice among the
users in the Philippines
Republic Act 6425, otherwise known as the “Dangerous Drugs
Act of 1972” was approved on March 30, 1972
In 1982, another procedural amendment to RA 6425 was made
through Batas Pambansa 179 which itemized prohibited drugs and
its derivatives
In 1995, the DDB launched “Oplan Iwas Droga” which has become
the national flagship program on drug abuse prevention
In 2002, Republic Act 9165 or the “Comprehensive Dangerous
Drugs Act of 2002” repealed RA 6425
Barkada Kontra Droga is a peer-based program designed as a
preventive education and information strategy to counter the
dangers and disastrous effects of drug abuse

Known as the Philippine Anti-Illegal Drugs Strategy or PADS which


has been institutionalized by virtue of Executive Order Number
66, signed by President Duterte on 29 October 2018, the plan of
action sets our goal in creating drug-free communities by 2022

Under the administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, drug


prevention and control has become a top priority of the government

The penalties for drug offences vary depending on the age of the
offender (adult or minor), type of drug, quantities involved, previous
offences, and the state or territory in which the offence happened.
