Lesson Idea Name: The Alphabet is All Around Us

Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten, ELA
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSEKL2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English
capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
a. Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I.
b. Recognize and name end punctuation.
c. Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short-vowel sounds (phonemes).
d. Spell simple words phonetically, drawing on knowledge of sound-letter relationships.

Technology Standard Addressed: Creativity and Innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking,
construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression

Guiding question or statement:

Where do we see the alphabet around us?

Set a goal that you want to achieve with this plan for learning with the use of multi-media tools? Will you
use your video as a sample of what students will design or will you use the video for meaningful learning
about a topic? Be sure to mention what tool you/your students will use.
The goal for my students is for them to use the video as a strong introduction to what we will be learning. It
will allow them to think about what the alphabet is and where they see it in their everyday lives.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

Levels of Technology Integration

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The children will be engaged from the second they see the video because the video includes music, pictures
of things they have seen before, and they will hear my voice speaking throughout it. The opening question
will allow them to dig deep and try to think about what they already know about the alphabet. The stations
will allow for their multiple needs and learning preferences to be met. The station for writing will have them
practicing on how to write the letters and to see what they look like. The station for building the letters will
allow them to further understand how they are constructed. The matching game will allow the children to see

what objects or things in the world start with the letter. The read aloud with the teacher will allow them to
hear the different sounds the letters make. The activity where they have to write the letter in sugar, sand, or
salt is a tactile method that will allow them to see and feel how to write the letters and what they look like.
The booklet will allow them to use creativity and to explore the world around them regarding the alphabet.

Lesson idea implementation:

In the beginning of the lesson, I will open up with a video that I made about the alphabet. After watching the
video, I will ask the children what they saw or heard. I will explain to them what the alphabet is and teach
them the alphabet song. We would sing the song in the beginning and end of each class. After, the students
would get into stations. The first station would be writing the letters. The second station would be where the
children do a matching game where they match the letter to the picture that the letter starts with. The third
station would be building the letters. The last station will be doing a read aloud with the children. Next, there
would be a whole group activity where the children would write or draw the letters using sugar, sand, or salt.
They would write the letter, say its name, say the sounds, and say an object or thing that starts with the
letter. Their summative assessment would be to create a booklet that has all of the letters in it. They would
include the letter and a drawing or the word that starts with the letter. The objects they include in their
booklet would have to be in their house or their community. I would provide them with the booklets already
made and there would be a space for the letter, drawing, and word. To close out the lesson, I would have the
children come up to present their booklet. As an extension, depending on how the lesson is going, we would
make a class alphabet video. The children would present a letter from their book, along with the sound and
the word or drawing they have, and I would record them. I would then put all of the recordings together in
one video and play it for the children and parents.

Importance of technology:
The video will allow the children as well as the parents to see what it is we will be learning in class. It gives
them a little sneak peak and grabs their attention. I could use other videos created by others to help teach the
alphabet.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

The only issue I see with this project is having the parents’ permission to share their child’s work. I want to
implement an extension activity where I would need their permission to put their child in the video.

Reflective Practice:
The activities throughout the lesson will meet the needs and learning preferences of the students. They will also keep
the students engaged. The overall lesson will provide the children with a deeper understanding of what the alphabet is
and where it is in the world around us as it relates to their own lives. An extension I would like to do is to make a class
alphabet video. This is where I would have each child in the class present one letter of their booklet. They would say the
letter, the sound, and what they wrote or drew about that starts with the letter. I would record each of the children
doing this and put it together into one video. I would share it with them and the parents at the end of the lesson.
