CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Security was and also now an issue of concern in our household and also in office and

shops. Security system is one of the primary concern of everybody caused by fear of

unauthorized person entering their home or office without them knowing. Now, where

everything is connected through network, anyone can hold of information from anywhere

around the world. Due to its risk and serious issue of being hacked, it is very important to have

some kind of personal identification system to access one’s own information.

Fingerprint recognition is one of the most secure systems because a fingerprint of one

person never matches with others. Therefore, unauthorized access can be restricted by

designing a lock that stores the fingerprints of one or more authorized users and unlock the

system when match is found with phone text alert notification which helps in notifying the

owner of an intruder have been carried out. Our design is implemented to provide better

security as users don’t need to remember passwords and don’t need any sort of keys or cards

that often get lost.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLLEM

This study focuses on having a less hassle and unique security system that can be

trusted and rely on in a fingerprint door lock with phone text alert notification. To reach an

acceptable implementation for the said door lock, security should be taken as a major

challenge. This seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How do we set – up high and strong authentication between the user point entity and

the programming interface? Will this property provide strong privacy guarantees?

2. How do we generate an access for the user that has privilege to unlock the door?

3. What kind of microcontroller would satisfy the aims of the product?

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The study aims to develop a prototype of a microcontroller-based locker system that

can: a) enroll fingerprints of the thumb and index fingers, and saves these patterns in the

system; b) Unlock the locker using fingerprint and c) send text message of the passcode

when an unrecognized fingerprint is encountered.

The objective of the study is to have a suitable and developed fingerprint door lock with

phone alert notification which aims to offer high security, easy access, and control. It also

seeks to enhance the lock mechanism making it more robust, productive and innovative.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Home Owners

This study can help the home owners to have a reliable and more secured

security system that gives them safety and peace.

Offices

This study can be used in offices especially when the office is handling money. It

can be used in drawers and vaults to have better security.

Establishments

This study can help to have a secured establishment that gives you safety to stay

away from harm and thieves.

Students

The study will help the students to appreciate and learn more innovative studies.

It can also help them explore new ideas in the field of robotics and will inspire them to discover

more of it.

Researchers

The study can also be used as referrals in conducting similar studies in the

future. The findings of this study can be used as basis to the future researchers who will

conduct research in line with this.

Community

This study can help the community to have higher security and can promote

peace. In totality, the proposed study is believed to be significant because it is useful for the

people in the community.

1.5 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study is to focus on the reliability of the fingerprint door lock with phone text alert

in the community especially in schools and offices. This intends to offer high security and easy

access control. The development phase will rather focus on producing innovative door lock

than sticking with the old ones. This can lead to a product that has high security. However, this
would take time due to the availability of the materials in locale so the researchers need to wait

for the ordered pieces to be delivered.

1.6 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Arduino. Is an open-source hardware and software company, project and user

community that designs and manufactures single-board microcontrollers and microcontroller

kits for building digital devices.

Arduino Uno. Is an open-source microcontroller board based on the Microchip

ATmega328P microcontroller and developed by Arduino.cc. The board is equipped with sets of

digital and analog input/output pins that may be interfaced to various expansion boards and

other circuits.

Biometrics. Are physical or behavioral human characteristics to that can be used to

digitally identify a person to grant access to systems, devices or data.

Computer programming. The process of designing and building an executable computer

program to accomplish a specific computing result or to perform a specific task.

Flash memory. Is a non-volatile memory chip used for storage and for transferring data

between a personal computer (PC) and digital devices.

Liquid-crystal Display (LCD). It is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated

optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals combined with

polarizers.
Microcontroller unit (MCU). Is a small computer on a single metal-oxide-semiconductor

(MOS) integrated circuit (IC) chip. It contains one or more CPUs (processor cores) along with

memory and programmable input/output peripherals.

Sensor. Is a device, module, machine, or subsystem whose purpose is to detect events

or changes in its environment and send the information to other electronics, frequently a

computer processor.

Subscriber Identity Module (SIM). Is a removable smart card for mobile phones that

stores network specific information used to authenticate and identify subscribers on the

network.
